Detectives said the killer often took small items during his burglaries such as coins, cash, ID cards and jewelry. Some victims told authorities that the killer called them after the crimes.

The "greatest" serial offender ever is finally caught!! This guy is a sick fuck who toyed with the police! What separates him from most other serial killers/offenders is that his victims were all middle class, and all were attacked in their homes. Most serial offenders prey on "safe" victims, prostitutes, runaways, people who live a "risky" life or have an unattached lifestyle. All his attacks occurred in California, never crossing state lines which many other serial offenders do. He broke into over 60 homes and committed 51 rapes and 12 murders! My guess is they got a DNA match through a relative! Finally the victims have some peace in their lives!! Great day for law enforcement!!!!

Saw the documentary thanks to the post by CG. Good stuff.

Yeah, I've seen the ID channel 4 episodes & the 5 episode on HLN called Unmasking a Killer......both done very well. Its hard to imagine how he found time to stalk & do recon work while holding down a job & being married. He had his first child in 1981, then took 5 years off, then raped & killed one more woman, then his wife had a 2nd child in 1986 & my guess he retired from rape & murder, then had a 3rd child in 1989.

Guy lived in the same house since 1986, that's 32 years, & very close to some of his victims, this guy was nuts!

TCG - pretty sure they used that controversial method of looking at DNA markers from family members to identify suspects ...

the method Karina Vetranos's dad in Queens jogger case was lobbying for ...

in this case I'm pretty sure it was a website like ancestry.com that did him in .. someone in the family posted dana i guess ? and the
marker pointed to that lineage and they went from there

Relative's DNA from genealogy websites cracked East Area Rapist case, DA's office says

Sacramento investigators tracked down East Area Rapist suspect Joseph James DeAngelo using genealogical websites that contained genetic information from a relative, the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office confirmed Thursday.

The effort was part of a painstaking process that began by using DNA from one of the crime scenes from years ago and comparing it to genetic profiles available online through various websites that cater to individuals wanting to know more about their family backgrounds by accepting DNA samples from them, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Grippi.

The investigation was conducted over a long period of time as officials in Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert's office and crime lab explored online family trees that appeared to have matches to DNA samples from the East Area Rapist's crimes, Grippi said. They then followed clues to individuals in the family trees to determine whether they were potential suspects.

The process finally came to fruition last Thursday, when the investigation focused on the possibility that DeAngelo might be a suspect, a suspicion that was bolstered by the fact that he had lived in areas where the attacks occurred and was in the right age range, Grippi said.

That discovery set the investigation into high gear, with Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones' investigators setting up surveillance on DeAngelo in his quiet Citrus Heights neighborhood and obtaining his DNA from something he discarded, Schubert and Jones said at a news conference Wednesday.

Results from comparing that DNA sample to the original crime scene samples were positive for matching DeAngelo to the crimes, Grippi said, but officials wanted the strongest possible link and set out to collect a second, more robust sample.

Those results came back from the D.A.'s crime lab Monday evening, leading to a rush to prepare for an arrest of DeAngelo, an effort that officials said they wanted to make quickly to ensure public safety after a 44-year mystery.

DeAngelo was arrested outside his home Tuesday afternoon and booked into the county jail on two charges of murder in the February 1978 slayings of Katie and Brian Maggiore in Rancho Cordova.

He is expected to face charges in 12 homicide cases in Sacramento, Orange, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties stemming from a rape and slaying spree that authorities say stretched from 1974 through May 1986.

Schubert and Jones have declined to reveal details of how their investigations led them to DeAngelo, but have said that information will be made known publicly soon.

DeAngelo faces arraignment in Sacramento Superior Court on Friday.

say goodbye to the cat and mouse game of serial killers from our youth.. gone are the days of tracking the stats from your favorite killer..

this is the era of the one and done murderers.. makes no sense to try and get on one of these hot streaks like this guy did it will never happen again...

ironically they are encouraging mass murders because no reason to even attempt to go one by one.. with cameras and dna you'll never get past one or two..

thats why now you have the las vegas tragedy etc ... law enforcement and the american public that allows this is just as complicit but they will never acknowledge

There are 50 active serial killers in the US. I say, probably more. They account for a lot of the missing. They are sharper than what you think. Dahmer got to the point he wanted to get caught, he said he couldnt stop.

If the Golden State Killer tried to do today what he did back then, even if he was a cop, no way could he get away with hundreds of burglaries, 50 rapes & 12 murders. Too much technology out here now a days. The person committing rapes now a days will definitely be caught, they leave DNA behind.

I saw a retired FBI agent state on a program I was watching that the actual number of serial killers in America at one time is between 200 & 400......the low number of 50 the feds throw out is low & not correct.

Make sure I got this right. They go to Ancestry or any other retail DNA company and get a hit on a family member and track this guy down using this method? I love it but I see the ACLU spending mucho dinero fighting this, even if authorities got a warrant. I did this a couple of years ago and I get emails all the time from 2nd and 3rd cousins wanting to know my family tree.

This is a game changer if the SCOTUS eventually holds this method up. I may have a 2nd cousin removed that is a serial killer, I want him/her to get busted if they are rapists or murderers.

Am I missing anything? Any civil libertarians out there that have a problem with this?

You're sadly mistaken. These folks are brilliant.

And I'll add, many serial killer victims are never found, unless they want them to be. Then, they will rarely mess up. Very interesting shit!

One of our most notorious serial killers, Bruce McArthur, all his confirmed victims disappeared from 2010 to 2017. DeAngelo would not have left his semen had DNA existed.
