I think he was just trying to make a joke but he's too stupid/socially awkward to really pull it off. So he just came off like an ass. And yeah, it isn't about PC but just about treating another person with respect.
This is his 7th year in the league, he's been getting questions from female reporters for awhile now so I really doubt he was that taken aback by her question.

i think a female sports reporter has plenty of reason to be offended by his comments because he clearly just dismisses their profession. if a chess player answers a black reporter with "i can't believe a black man is asking about chess..." he'd be taking knees at the local high school chess championship
