Belichick going for it on 4th and 14 in undefeated season super bowl was fn absurd. Cannot believe that call has been virtually forgotten.

8. Bill Belichick Goes for It
There aren’t too many decisions on the football field that New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick can be questioned about. However, the choice to go for it on 4th-and-two from his own 28-yard line during a game against the Indianapolis Colts in 2009 is certainly one of them. With a six-point lead and close to two minutes left, Belichick had his offense remain on the field, with quarterback Tom Brady completing a pass that was inches short of the first-down marker, giving the ball back to the Colts and Peyton Manning, who quickly marched the team down for the game-winning score.

Wait, this can't be true. I thought Peyton always choked? How dare he lead the biggest comeback in AFC Championship history.

I know many of you guys will say I'm crazy but I still disagree with the Seattle call being considered SOOOO wrong.

We've seen the same call in that situation a million times, where the offense tries to throw when the D is clearly expecting run.

And even if they had run doesn't mean they would have gotten in which would have likely led to a pass the following down as well.

I know-I know old news & argument haha...

Agree. The only dumb thing was throwing it in the middle of the field. Too many things can go wrong. But throwing itself was a good call in that situation with the D NE had in. What would have been #1, or pretty damn high, IF Seattle had scored a TD was BB not calling a Time Out in that situation. But as Chop said, everything is results oriented second guessing. As a NE bettor at that time I was screaming for BB to call a TO and have enough time left to at least try and kick a tying FG if need be.

BB not calling a time out was way worse IMO. I thought Pete Carol thought they would call the time out, and thats why he did that play to not give up info on what they were going to run.

The D NE had in was irrelevant. Seattle had the mo and weren't being stopped. Hadn't stopped beast all day long.

Probably would have lost the game anyway.
Dumb things like that happen all the time in sports.

Dont know why people decide to talk about that event for over 20 years .

Bonehead things happen all the time.
But not all of them are brought up over and over again for the next 20 years.

I did not say it wasn't boneheaded .

I said it was overblown.

No I don't know if they would have lost the game anyway.

But the odds of them winning that game even without the timeout was probably less then 25%.

Extrodinary claims (biggest boneheaded play in sports history) require Extrodinary evidence.

In order for the most boneheaded play in sports history to be the truly the most boneheaded play in sports history you would have to almost certainly conclude that that play 100% cost his or her team the win.

In this case they still probably had less then a 40% chance of winning even if he did not call the time out.

So how can that play be the biggest boneheaded play of all time there was less then a 50% chance that the play affected the outcome of the game?

Boneheaded yes
Overblown yes

Little managed the Dodgers for two seasons after this.. What hurt little the most in this was that he had taken out Pedro literally every time that season is same situation.

No shit, and Seattle ran that play a lot during the season, hence Butler was prepared and jumped it. Decision wasn't made in a vacuum, The very successful head coach of Seattle said " we believed we had a passing advantage against their goal line defense". Malcum Butler made a sensational play, game over.

Plus Lynch was something like 1 out of 5 in those situations this year, now English majors think it was a guaranteed score

The idiocy is somewhat surreal in my book

The decision does not belong on this list

When i say English majors I'm referring to the media who thinks their degree has taught them how to manage every sport, run every business, grow the economy , raise every child, fight wars and essentially live everyone's lives for them

Stated differently, the fucking turds of this world

Disagree w/most. 15 is legit for sure, and the Brian Sipe call is one of the worst of all time.

the morninweg call to kickoff in OT was NOT a bad decision as the wind was a huge factor in the game.
however when the defense couldn't hold, everyone jumped on him (like this article) as if this was
the worst choice ever. I disagree, but i'm obviously in the minority
