Angels' Morin leaves with injury
The Sports Xchange

BOSTON -- Los Angeles right-handed relief pitcher Mike Morin left the game with a left oblique strain after throwing six pitches in the bottom of the seventh inning against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night at Fenway Park.

He was able to walk off the field and into the Angels' dugout under his own power. Right-hander Vinnie Pestano replaced him on the mound for Los Angeles.

Morin was 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA, four walks and 13 strikeouts in 19 appearances coming into Saturday's game.

Boston led Los Angeles 4-2 at the time of Morin's injury.

Red Sox's Victorino departs with calf injury
The Sports Xchange

BOSTON -- Shane Victorino left with left calf tightness in the third inning of the Boston Red Sox's game against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night at Fenway Park.

The right fielder, who missed time earlier this week because of the same ailment, appeared to reaggravate the calf while pursuing a deep fly ball in the top of the third.

Mookie Betts pinch-hit for Victorino in the bottom of the inning and drove in Boston's second run of the game with a line-single to left. The score was tied 2-2 through three innings.

Victorino, who entered Saturday night batting .241 with a home run and three RBIs in 19 games this season, singled in his only at-bat against the Angels in the first inning.

Mets' Wright suffers injury setback
The Sports Xchange

Third baseman David Wright of the New York Mets suffered another setback in his recovery from injuries when his back stiffened up, and he will be shut down for a week.

Assistant general manager John Ricco of the Mets said Wright has been diagnosed with stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spinal column in the lower back. He is taking medication for the condition.

Wright will continue to receive treatment in the next week for the injury, which the team is calling lower back tightness, Ricco added.

Ricco said Wright, who went on the disabled list in mid-April because of a hamstring injury, did not take batting practice as planned on Friday.

Wright developed lower back pain early in May after he recovering from the hamstring injury. He began baseball activities this week and was expected to return before the end of May prior to the latest setback.

'Rubber Match'

Washington and Philadelphia conclude at three-game set at Nationals Park with each having won a game. Nationals' lefty Gio Gonzalez carrying a 3-2 record, 4.94 ERA toes the rubber in this one. Gonzalez will match pitches with Phillies righthander Aaron Harang heading to the hill with a 4-3 record, miniscule 1.82 ERA. According to the current betting odds, the Nationals enter this contest -$1.80 to -$2.00 favorite. That hefty chalk status can be attributed to the presence of Gonzalez on the mound as Nats have a 16-4 stretch at home when he starts and enter 5-1 in his last six starts during game three of a series. The fact this is a rubber match also contributes to the whopping price tag as Nationals have responded at home in rubber matches posting a 9-3 record the past twelve situations including 2-0 when handing the ball to Gonzalez. However, you still bet Washington at some risk. Phillies have been on a tear winning 8-of-11 behind 4.5 runs/game and do have a sparkling 5-1 record last six vs Nats with Gonzalez tossing including a 4-1 victory earlier this season.

Five To Follow MLB Betting: Sunday, May 24, 2015 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews

I am completely tired of hearing about the New England Patriots' "Deflategate" and think it's the most overblown thing in modern NFL history in terms of a rule violation or whatever you want to call it. But I bring that up because we had a baseball version of tampering with a ball happen on Thursday night as Brewers reliever Will Smith was ejected against Atlanta because it was determined had had slathered rosin and sunscreen on his forearm. He said he put it on in the bullpen because it was chilly and windy and forgot to wipe it off. Come on dude! Frankly, a majority of pitchers do something like this but aren't dumb enough to have it out in the open. New commissioner Rob Manfred gave Smith an eight-game suspension. That makes me think Manfred might be fairly strict, because eight games for a reliever is a pretty long one.

Reds at Indians (-180, 7.5)

Cleveland will get a big piece of its lineup back Sunday as catcher Yan Gomes will be activated from the disabled list. He was great last year in hitting .278 with 21 homers and 74 RBIs. He was hitting just .150 in 20 at-bats this season before going down with a knee injury. The Tribe caught a major break in this one as Reds ace Johnny Cueto was scheduled to start. But he was scratched with what is only being called "general stiffness." Hello, welcome to my world! So it's Raisel Iglesias (1-0, 3.94). He has pitched out of relief in his past two outings and has never faced the Indians. Cleveland's Trevor Bauer (3-1, 3.31) has oddly had exactly the same start the last two times out: 7.1 innings, four hits and one run allowed while walking three. Only a few Reds have ever faced him. Todd Frazier is 0-for-2 with two strikeouts. Cincinnati again will have the DH in this series finale

Key trends: The Reds are 1-7 in their past eight vs. teams with a losing record (entering Saturday). Cleveland is 6-1 in Bauer's past seven at home against teams with a losing record. The "over/under" has hit under in seven of Bauer's past nine at home against teams in his past nine at home.

Early lean: Indians and under.

Cardinals at Royals (-105, 7.5)

Could this be a preview of a 1985 World Series rematch this fall? Absolutely could be with both clubs leading their Central Divisions. The Royals and Cardinals are both +900 to win the World Series, tied for third behind the Dodgers and Nationals. The Cards' Michael Wacha (6-0, 2.13) is in the early NL Cy Young conversation for sure. He hasn't allowed more than two earned runs over his past four starts, and the Cards haven't lost one of his starts all year (whether he got a decision or not). The Royals' Lorenzo Cain is 2-for-6 with a double off him. Mike Moustakas is 0-for-4. Kansas City's Yordano Ventura (3-3, 4.56) comes off his best outing of the season, shutting out the Reds over seven innings on four hits, striking out six without a walk. Yadier Molina is 1-for-3 off him. Matt Carpenter is as well.

Key trends: St. Louis is 6-0 in Wacha's past six on the road. The Royals are 5-0 in Ventura's past five interleague starts. The over is 7-0 in Ventura's past seven following a quality start in his most recent appearance.

Early lean: Love the under. Take St. Louis.

Orioles at Marlins (-115, 8.5)

Has any team fired two managers in one season? Maybe one of George Steinbrenner's Yankees clubs. That shift of GM Dan Jennings to the dugout after he fired Manager Mike Redmond hasn't exactly spurred the Marlins entering the weekend. Miami's Tom Koehler (2-3, 3.70) had been bumped to bullpen briefly but returned to the rotation Tuesday and pitched well, allowing no earned runs over 6.2 innings against Arizona but of course the Marlins lost. Few Orioles have seen him. Travis Snider is 0-for-6 with two strikeouts. A reminder that the Birds won't have the DH. Baltimore's Miguel Gonzalez (5-2, 3.24) has won two straight starts. This will be his first this season against an NL team. Only a few Marlins have seen him. Ichiro might get a spot start in the outfield as he is 6-for-19 off Gonzalez with three doubles and two homers.

Key trends: The Orioles are 5-2 in Gonzalez's past seven against teams with a losing record. Miami is 4-0 in Koehler's past four interleague starts. The under is 8-1 in Gonzalez's past nine in Game 3 of a series.

Early lean: Orioles and under.

Angels at Red Sox (-134, 9)

Boston has to be encouraged by the past two outings of lefty Wade Miley (3-4, 5.10). He has allowed just two earned and 12 hits over 13.2 innings in wins over the Rangers and A's. I'm not ready to call him cured yet as those are two of the worst teams in the American League. The Angels should provide a better test. Miley has never faced them. David Freese knows Miley from their NL days, and Freese is 3-for-5 with a walk off him. Fellow southpaw Hector Santiago (3-2, 2.25) gets the call for L.A. The Halos have won his past two and he has allowed only two earned and 11 hits over 13 innings. Dustin Pedroia is 3-for-7 with three doubles off him. Big Papi is 2-for-5 with four RBIs.

Key trends: The Angels are 1-9 in their past 10 on Sunday. Boston is 1-6 in its past seven on the day. The over is 6-1 in Santiago's past seven on the road.

Early lean: Red Sox and over.

Rangers at Yankees (-129, 8.5)

This is your ESPN Sunday night game so will have live betting at the sportsbooks. The Yankees on ESPN? Really? The Bombers will retire the No. 51 of Bernie Williams before the game, and he will get a plaque in Monument Park in a pregame ceremony. The team will also wear a Williams patch on its hats. In postseason history, Williams ranks first all-time in RBIs and is second in home runs, hits, doubles and runs. Hall of Famer? No. But a very good player. The Yanks start lefty Chris Capuano. He made his season debut off the DL on May 17 in Kansas City and allowed four runs in three innings. Texas' Prince Fielder is 2-for-8 with two homers off him. Leonys Martin is 1-for-1 with a homer. The Rangers' Yovani Gallardo (3-6, 4.26) has lost five of his past six outings. This will be his second career start against the Yankees. Chase Headley is 7-for-19 with a homer off him. Alex Rodriguez has never faced Gallardo.

Key trends: Texas is 1-5 in Gallardo's past five on the road. The Yanks are 0-7 in their past seven vs. right-handers (entering Saturday).

Early lean: Rangers and over.

25* graded play on the NY Yankees as they take on the Texas Rangers in AL action set to start at 8:05 PM ET and will be televised by ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. This is the only qualified play I have to release today. In stead of posting it and making it a $30 cost I am releasing it FREE. IOn the majority of days I get at least three 25* MLB qualified plays that I then package into the popular 3-pack of Top rated Titans. I can't charge you the same for just 1 pick. For those new to my service, I utilize several methods of artificial intelligence ranging from back propagation to decision tress and weighted simulated projections. When these align, then I get the graded play. In this case it clearly shows a solid reason to get on board the Yankees. Texas humiliated C.C. Sabathia and the entire team in yesterday's 15-4 beat down. Now, on national TV, I do expect the Yankees to put forth a winning effort to end their losing ways of late. Supporting this graded play is a proven system posting a 120-80 mark good for 60% winners and has made 54 units/unit wagered averaging a +111 DOG play. Play on AL home teams (NY YANKEES) that are struggling offensive team scoring

OAKLAND (-130)

Analysis: I'll take Sonny Gray on the mound today with the A's..Some of the numbers for the A's just don't add up. This team has encountered some bad luck and the wins are just not coming there way..I think with Gray on the mound today they will make it two in a row...Seattle will counter with Erasmo Ramirez and he has been shoved into this starting lineup..He has looked game for the most part, but his lack of being a starter can catch up with him here..His ERA is almost a wash as he pitched in relief...His last two starts he has gone 10 innings and gave up a total of 3 hits and 3 ER....He is a quality pitcher, but at times can get roughed up..I think he gets roughed up here with an A's team who is about to get hot from what i see. Oakland has had a miserable May and they are just 3-14 right now..They got the bats going yesterday and scored 5 runs in a shutout win Vs. Tampa..A's make it two in a row today for the first time in a long time behind Gray....Buy low, sell high and we are getting the A's at a rock bottom price right now.. The amount of 1 run losses they have dealt with tells me they are not a 15-30 team right now..They have had some bad luck and they are about to turn it around...I am looking at playing the A's for a stretch here as well.

Minnesota Twins

The Twins are now 14-5 against lefties this season after beating the White Sox and Chris Sale on Saturday. Minnesota has posted a 2.65 ERA while going 6-3 versus Chicago this season, and allowed 14 runs while winning five of the last six meetings. And Sunday it gets to face another preferred lefty in Chisox starter Jose Quintana. Prefer Twins counterpart Kyle Gibson, who yielded just 18 hits while going 2-0 with an 0.96 ERA in the four starts previous to last Sunday's loss vs. the Rays.

Preview: Astros (27-16) at Tigers (26-17)
Game: 4
Venue: Comerica Park
Date: May 24, 2015 1:08 PM EDT

Anibal Sanchez has struggled at home, where he gave up three straight homers in his last outing.

Up next for him is the team that leads the majors in longballs.

Sanchez has an excellent record, however, against the Houston Astros as he tries to help the Detroit Tigers capture a four-game set Sunday.

Sanchez (3-5, 5.60 ERA) fell to 1-3 with a 7.57 ERA in his last five home starts after allowing seven runs over 3 2-3 innings in Tuesday's 8-1 defeat to Milwaukee. He surrendered consecutive homers to Ryan Braun, Adam Lind and Aramis Ramirez in the third.

The right-hander has allowed nine homers in 54 2-3 innings after giving up four in 126 in 2014.

"It's been clearly something that is uncharacteristic for Sanchie. Long ball wasn't an issue last year, but this year it's been a little bit of a different story now," manager Brad Ausmus said.

Houston (28-16) has homered 62 times, though it hasn't connected in its last 20 innings in this series. Sanchez is 4-1 with a 2.15 ERA in eight career starts against the Astros, who he didn't face last year.

Colby Rasmus has faced Sanchez the most among Houston hitters, going 4 for 19 with a homer and 11 strikeouts. Jason Castro has two doubles in 11 at_bats and Jose Altuve is 2 for 8 in this matchup.

Detroit (26-18) had its three-game win streak snapped with a 3-2 loss Saturday, with Ian Kinsler hitting into a triple play in the fifth inning with the Tigers ahead by one. The Astros responded with the go-ahead runs in the sixth.

'I'm thinking we're in trouble,' Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. 'We had no outs, we had the bullpen getting ready, so we had a lot of action going.'

The sloppy game featured three total errors and a wild pitch by Houston starter Lance McCullers when he was issuing an intentional walk.

Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias bruised his left knee and exited after the fifth inning, with Hernan Perez replacing him. Iglesias, second on the team with a .333 average, is day to day.

Miguel Cabrera is batting .415 during an 11-game hitting streak, going 5 for 10 with three walks and three strikeouts in this series. Former Astros outfielder J.D. Martinez has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games with a .373 average.

Altuve is hitless in his last 10 at_bats and has seen his average dip to .294. It has fallen below .300 this weekend for the first time since he was at .297 on April 22.

Houston starter Roberto Hernandez (2-3, 3.99) is a familiar nemesis to Detroit from his days with Cleveland from 2006-12. He is 8-6 with a 4.10 ERA in 18 career starts against the Tigers.

Cabrera is a .359 hitter with three homers in 39 at_bats off the right-hander. Rajai Davis is 9 for 21 off Hernandez and Yoenis Cespedes has two doubles in as many at_bats.

Hernandez allowed two runs in six innings Tuesday to earn a 6-4 home win over Oakland. He pitched at least six innings for the seventh straight outing.

Preview: Mariners (19-22) at Blue Jays (19-25)
Game: 3
Venue: Rogers Centre
Date: May 24, 2015 1:07 PM EDT

Although the Seattle Mariners have leaned on solid starting pitching in this series with the Toronto Blue Jays, they may have to find another route to success in the finale.

Looking to finish the three-game sweep Sunday, the Mariners will turn to the erratic Taijuan Walker, who has struggled through the early portion of his first full MLB season.

Walker (1-4, 7.47 ERA) was rated by MLB.com as the fourth-best overall prospect in 2013 and posted a 2.89 ERA over 53 innings during the past two seasons. However, in his first stint as a rotation mainstay for Seattle (20-22), the 22-year-old owns this season's worst ERA among starters with at least 35 innings pitched.

He was chased Tuesday after allowing four runs, seven hits and four walks in 3 2-3 innings against Baltimore.

"His command wasn't there and he struggled with his velocity as well. Certainly was not one of his best outings," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "More than anything, he's probably just trying to find the strike zone. It's unfortunate. He's got to learn to get after it and rely on his stuff.

"With a young pitcher like Taijuan, in five starts there's going to be two bad ones, one's going to be OK, then two are going to dazzle you. We have to show patience."

McClendon would appear to be correct in his assessment of Walker, who has managed to impress on a few occasions this season. He has two quality starts and struck out a season-high eight while allowing only one run against Houston on April 21.

His best outing of last season came against Toronto. Walker allowed just one run and four hits through eight innings and struck out six in a tough-luck 1-0 loss Sept. 24.

Walker will follow two strong outings from the top of the Mariners' rotation. Felix Hernandez pitched seven solid innings against Toronto (19-26) for his seventh win of the season Friday before James Paxton had a quality start Saturday in Seattle's 3-2 victory.

Aaron Sanchez (3-4, 4.17) will look to avoid the sweep for the Blue Jays, who have dropped nine of their last 11.

Also 22 years old and a top prospect - rated 35th overall in 2014 - Sanchez has been impressive in his first season as a starter, allowing more than three earned runs only once. He's also coming off 7 1-3 quality innings Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels.

Sanchez's only issue has been poor command, which has led to high pitch counts and early exits. Sanchez ranks last in baseball with 6.35 walks per nine innings and has gone past the sixth only twice despite averaging over 105 pitches in his last five outings.

Gibbons, however, remains unconcerned with the development of his young pitcher.

"You look at his starts, he keeps getting better and better and better," Gibbons told MLB's official website. "When the season is all said and done he'll be on his way."

Seattle's Kyle Seager extended his hitting streak to nine Saturday with his sixth home run of the year after Nelson Cruz launched his 17th on Friday.

Chris Colabello has homered in both contests for Toronto. The right fielder is batting .379 since joining the big league club May 5.
