NHL Preview: Lightning (50-24) at Rangers (53-22)

Date: May 24, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) - Take the spotlight off goaltender Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference finals and put it on Ben Bishop of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

If it sounds fickle, that's the way it's been for the goaltenders in this series between two of the NHL's top-scoring teams.

Game 1 was tight checking. Two was a Lightning blowout. Three was a shootout and the last one Lundqvist stole for the Rangers with a 38-save performance in a 5-1 win that evened the series at 2-all.

Lundqvist was special in Game 4 after giving up 12 goals in losing the previous two games.

Now the focus is on Bishop heading in Game 5 on Sunday night at Madison Square Garden. The big goaltender, who has a 10-2 career mark against the Rangers, has given up 10 goals in the past two games.

'I just don't think you get here to this point in the season and even into the playoffs without having a goaltender, a guy that bails you out when you need to be bailed out,' Lightning coach Jon Cooper said Saturday. 'Ben Bishop has bailed us out some games. Have we bailed him out?

'Sure we have sometimes. But for the most part, Bishop has been rock solid for us. Especially for a kid that's not played in an NHL playoff game before, there is a brighter light on him, and all he's done is passed every test that gets sent his way. '

Like Rangers coach Alain Vigneault, Cooper had no intention of switching goaltenders, calling the suggestion 'preposterous.'

Bishop didn't play poorly in Game 4. The five goals came on a breakaway by Rick Nash, a rebound by Chris Kreider, a Keith Yandle shot that went off a Lightning defender, and two power-play goals, including Nash's second on a rebound.

While not happy about giving up 10 goals in two games, Bishop reacted much like Lundqvist after his struggles. He planned to learn.

'You never want to give up 10 goals in two games, but we did,' he said. 'We'll go back and look at it, and adjust.'

Despite the Rangers' margin of victory, the Lightning had the better of play at times, particularly in the second period. The game could easily have been another shootout had Tampa Bay buried its chances.

'Every game is a new game,' Rangers forward Martin St. Louis said. 'The stuff that might work in Game 3 might not work in Game 4, and it comes down to making good reads sometimes and look sharper at other times in games. Depending on how you're reading the rush or reading the play, do you pull back or do you jump in a lot?

'You really have to be aware of everything that's going on the ice and making the best move you can.'

Not only did Lundqvist rebound in Game 4, the Rangers also got big games from Nash and St. Louis. A 42-goal scorer in the regular season, Nash got his first two goals of the series on Friday and St. Louis scored his first of the playoffs this season after failing to convert several outstanding chances.

'It's a struggle when you're not scoring,' Nash said Saturday. 'I think it tests you mentally, it tests you emotionally. But at the end of the day it's not about you, it's about the team and anything you can do to help the team win. If the team's winning, you're obviously happy and smiling.'

The Rangers' also have produced on the power play, getting two extra-man goals in each of the past three games. They are 6-for-13 during that span.

'I think we've just got to play better,' Lightning defenseman Braydon Coburn said. 'There are a lot of aspects of the game that go into playing defense. Obviously, our penalty kill, we've got to make sure we shut them down and defensively we've got to pick things up.'

NOTES: Six of the Rangers' last 12 playoff series have been tied 2-all, dating to the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against Ottawa in 2012. New York is 4-1 in those series. ...New York has allowed two goals or fewer goals in 12 of 16 playoff games this year. ...Lightning captain Steven Stamkos has scored in three straight games and five of his last six.

Lundqvist needs to play lights out to beat Lightning
Justin Hartling

The New York Rangers put on a big statement game with a 5-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final. More than anything that win highlighted just how Henrik Lundqvist's play has affected the Rangers outcomes against Tampa.

In Lundy's two career wins against the Lightning he has a 1.00 goals against average. In his five career losses to Tampa, Lundqvist is sporting a 5.20 GAA and has allowed at least four goals in each of those contests.

Madison Square Garden will host Game 5 of the series Sunday with the Rangers currently a -135 favorite.

Irving's return for Game 3 a question mark for Cavs
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving tested his ailing left knee with a brace during practice and was listed as questionable for Sunday's Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Atlanta Hawks.

Irving sat out the Cavs' 94-82 victory over the Hawks in Game 2 on Friday night after tendinitis flared up in the knee. Cleveland took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series and could close out Atlanta at home.

During a workout on Saturday in Cleveland, Irving made cuts and drove to the basket while testing the knee. Trainers worked with him to adjust a brace.

Cavaliers coach David Blatt said the decision to play Irving on Sunday will be based on his medical condition. Irving went to Florida on Friday to consult renowned surgery Dr. James Andrews, who confirmed the tendinitis diagnosis but offered other ideas on how to treat the injury.

"If he's able to play, then he'll play," Blatt said. "He's a big part of the team, and this series is not finished. But if he's not able to play, he won't. That's the determining factor."

Guard Matthew Dellavedova replaced Irving in Game 2 and finished with 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

Irving is averaging 18.9 points and 3.5 assists per game in the playoffs.

Hawks' Korver out for remainder of playoffs
Stephen Campbell

According to Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta Hawks shooting guard Kyle Korver is out for the remainder of the NBA playoffs with an ankle injury.

The sharpshooter suffered the injury in Friday's Game 2 94-82 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Hawks find themselves in a 2-0 hole as the series shifts to Ohio.

Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals takes place on Sunday. As of this writing, the Hawks were +8.5 with a total of 190.5.

# 2 NORTHERN MATADOR 5/2

# 1 NORTHERN SECRET 3/1

# 9 GOLDEN STROKE 9/2

NORTHERN MATADOR looks very good to best this field of horses. Surely the class of the race with an average rating of 83. A nice choice. Running solidly, earned a very compelling TrackMaster Speed Rating in his most recent race (82). When the trainer Rousse puts Coppola up for the drive respectable things happen. Just check out the 23 win percent. NORTHERN SECRET - The trainer/horse combo percentages point out that this team are solid in the money finishers when working as a team. She's racing in good form, recording clear-cut TrackMaster Speed Ratings. An excellent choice. GOLDEN STROKE - Positive feel - competing well enough to contend in this race.

# 4 FOOLS GOLD 12/1

# 5 BITTERSWEET CHAMP 3/1

# 1 COLBY JATE 10/1

Really keen on the probability of FOOLS GOLD taking down the winner's share here may be overlooked at 12/1 on the line. Should compete well in this contest as his style of running fits well in this field of starters. Lining up in the 4 hole at Tioga Downs adds some hidden advantage as this position has a better than expected return on investment. Looks like a strong choice in this group of horses and his above average winning percentage says he has the ability to end up in the winner's circle today. BITTERSWEET CHAMP - Has competitive TrackMaster speed figs and unquestionably has to be thought of for a bet for this race. This fine animal has shown us some ability in the past, just look at the 91 average class statistic. Should play well in this contest. COLBY JATE - The panel of smart guys gives this nice horse a formidable chance to take this race, class ratings are tops in the grouping. The group likes gelding for the ability to bring horses back off a layoff, worth a look.

# 4 DOCS MISS VICTORY 3/1

# 7 CONNIE LEE 7/2

# 3 GHAZI'S LAST SHOT 6/1

DOCS MISS VICTORY looks to be a strong contender. CONNIE LEE - Have to take notice when any pony makes a quick turnaround. Ought to be carefully examined as she drops to compete against this less demanding field. GHAZI'S LAST SHOT - This equine enters today's contest with second time Lasix. The quick return to the races points to a sound effort this time out.

# 2 NO BUT HOLLYWOOD 8/5

# 1 LESSIE GIBSON 8/1

# 3 SECRET SOCIETY 3/1

NO BUT HOLLYWOOD looks to be a formidable contender. With a quite good 51 speed rating last time out, will definitely be a factor in this race. Have to consider solely on class, with some of the top class numbers of this field. Has put up strong Equibase Speed Figures in dirt route races in the past. LESSIE GIBSON - This pony must be bet on at the expected high odds. SECRET SOCIETY - Has been running soundly lately and should be up on the front end early on. Handler has sharp win rate (21 percent) at this distance and surface.

#8 MOVE THE CHAINS (ML=2/1)

MOVE THE CHAINS - As long as Leparoux keeps this horse off the pace, I have to believe this one could be a happy winner. This gelding is very reliable, frequently finishing in the money. Leparoux and Asmussen getting together are a punter's friend. This gelding is in fine form. Ran third on May 9th.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 JUMPIN FRAC FLASH (ML=3/2), #1A FRACULA (ML=3/2), #2 SERGIOS PRIDE (ML=5/1),

JUMPIN FRAC FLASH - Finished second in his most recent effort with a run-of-the-mill fig. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this field. FRACULA - Doesn't seem to be in a comfortable circumstance this time out. SERGIOS PRIDE - A bit of a lackluster effort when this colt finished sixth.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - MOVE THE CHAINS - Earnings per start is one measure of class I like to check out. This mount is in the top spot in the group and has a good shot to beat this crew.

Emerald Downs - Race #7 - Post: 4:52pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,300 Class Rating: 89

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#4 ACUTE (ML=4/1)
#7 VERTICAL LIFT (ML=5/2)
#6 WHISKEY MINER (ML=8/1)

ACUTE - The last time she tried this distance she got a fig good enough to win this affair. This mare shows a classic pattern of layoff, two sprints, and stretching to a route today. Looking at today's Equibase class figure, this campaigner is encountering an easier field than last time out at Emerald Downs. Has the look of a possible overlay right here in this race at morning line odds of 4/1. Finished fourth in last race at Emerald Downs but was close at the end. Mare put in a good late run at 6 furlongs and should relish the added distance today. VERTICAL LIFT - You have to really like that last race speed fig, 89, which is the best latest race speed rating of this bunch. Earnings per race entered is something that I believe can be a crucial factor. This animal is ranked at the very top in this bunch. WHISKEY MINER - Couton and Knapp teamed up together are a punter's friend. A campaigner coming back this promptly after a strong contest is a good sign.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 KRAZY FOR KUGEL (ML=3/1), #2 AMONG THE STARS (ML=7/2), #5 EMERALDCITY KITTEN (ML=6/1),

KRAZY FOR KUGEL - Nice race on May 1st at Emerald Downs, but the fact that there are no workouts since has to make one a little worried. Finished third in her most recent effort with a run-of-the-mill speed figure. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this field. AMONG THE STARS - The speed ratings continue to descend, 88/83/67. Not a healthy omen. Finished fifth in her most recent effort with a mediocre speed figure. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this bunch. EMERALDCITY KITTEN - This filly is always close, but just doesn't get the job done. Tough to play her on the front end. Finished first in her most recent race with a most unsatisfactory speed rating. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this bunch.

RACE #3 - BELMONT PARK - 2:22 PM EASTERN POST

6.0 FURLONGS DIRT FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD OPTIONAL CLAIMING $90,000.00 PURSE

#1 ROOM FOR ME
#3 LA MADRINA
#5 FRIVOLITY
#2 MEDAGLIA D'ARGENTO

#1 ROOM FOR ME takes a slight class drop (-1), has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in each of her last four outings, including a trio of "POWER RUN WINS" being embedded in this recent streak of racing consistency. Jockey Cornelio Velasquez and Trainer David Jacobson send her to the post ... they've hit the board with 56% of more than 230 entries saddled as a team to date. #3 LA MADRINA is the pace profile leader in this O.C. field, and has won three of her last five outings overall, with two of those "Circle Trips" also qualifying as "POWER RUN WINS." I did not however, consider her for my "top slot" today, as she has not raced in some 217 days.

DRF HARNESS

Race 7 - $25,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet (21 - 30 / $78.40): FOX VALLEY AUBRY (8th)

Spot Play: ALWAYS REESE (7th)

Race 1

(4) CHARMING MACIE three-year-old made a break in her last outing but if the filly minds her manners she has a big shot. (5) JESSE'S POTION doesn't look like much on paper but has been improving in her last two starts. (7) CONTINENTAL DIVIDE finds a much softer bunch; threat.

Race 2

(4) SEEKIN FOR GLAMOUR mare should find this spot easier than her last few; short price. (2) THEDAYYOUHAVEMADE looks to be sitting a good trip up close. (7) WESTERN BOUDOIR gets sent out for a low percentage trainer but has been competitive against better on the year.

Race 3

(8) SHEZ SO SASSY could be the sleeper in the race at a price with some racing luck. The 3-year-old filly was revving up for a brush when she made a break last start. (2) FOX VALLEY YOKO filly was the best horse in the class for a while at two and looks to be primed for a better effort second start back. (4) PERSUASIVE LOOK made a break last out but was a nice winner prior; threat.

Race 4

(6) ROCK N KILO four-year-old mare is sharp and just needs a similar effort to her last two. (2) BABYSHOEBUYER doesn't win often but will be in the mix. (7) ALWAYS TALKING has shown steady improvement but is probably best used underneath.

Race 5

(4) ANGEL DEMON filly makes her first start of the year against a suspect bunch. (5) ARTS-ROCKSTAR looks to primed for a better effort third start back off the layoff. (10) FOX VALLEY RUBY just missed last out and was the top driver's choice; threat.

Race 6

(6) HUDSON JESSE four-year-old mare will offer the better price and has a big driver advantage on his main rival. (5) JUSTICE JET will look to make it nine for eleven on the year; short price. (4) ANTS INER PANTS mare raced super last out and with any kind of similar effort to that she could upset the apple cart.

Race 7

(3) ALWAYS REESE well bred filly has a lot of upside and picks up the top driver. (4) SILVER GAL also has potential and faces an easier bunch. (5) RAVISHING IMAGE will look to make it two straight for proven connections.

Race 8

(7) FOX VALLEY AUBRY filly pacer has been facing significantly better and should get the jump early on her main competition. (10) DP ANGEL is one of few threats to the top choice especially with a good setup. (5) EXCELERATED SPEED mare drops back down to spot where she can get a piece.

Race 9

(2) RED SOLO CUP burned cash last out just getting picked off late. The well bred stallion has been a touch disappointing this year but still owns a good brush. (6) MY FUNKY FARKLE was right there with the top choice last out; threat. (3) TRICKY NICK owns ability and is just now back in racing shape.

Race 10

(7) REAL SHEILA filly dispatched this same group for fun last week and can do it again with a smooth trip. (1) GORGEOUS DUNE gets the best post and has room to improve in a field full of question marks. (6) FOX VALLEY REDHEAD has just been racing evenly; command a price.

MLB Preview: Rangers (20-23) at Yankees (22-21)

Game: 3
Venue: Yankee Stadium
Date: May 24, 2015 8:05 PM EDT

When the Texas Rangers acquired Josh Hamilton on April 27, they ended the day as the worst hitting team in the majors. Help couldn't come soon enough.

Now entering what could be their final game without the rehabbing outfielder, the Rangers feature a lineup manager Jeff Banister might be hesitant to change.

Consecutive big days at the plate have the Rangers in position for a three-game road sweep of the free-falling New York Yankees on Sunday night, as well as their top winning streak of the season with Hamilton possibly making his season debut Monday in Cleveland.

Saturday's 15-4 win was the fourth in a row for Texas (20-23), which has 25 runs and 27 hits in this series. Every starter had a hit, and after batting .210 in April, the team is at .274 in May with an MLB-best 116 runs.

"Our guys have been working on a lot of things since spring training and you can really see that it's starting to pay off," Banister told MLB's official website. "I'm really proud of the effort they have put in."

The Rangers scored their first 10 runs in the third inning with Shin-soo Choo delivering a three-run homer and an RBI single. Choo hit .096 with one homer and five RBIs in 16 April games, but he's batting .316 with six home runs and 17 RBIs in 22 games this month.

Prince Fielder also had two hits in the inning and finished 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. He's gone deep three times with seven RBIs in the series and is batting .405 on a 10-game hitting streak against New York.

The Rangers have experienced most of their success on the road, going 14-10 with wins in 10 of their last 13, and now seek their first sweep at Yankee Stadium since May 2003.

New York (22-21), which hasn't been swept at home since June 30-July 2 against Tampa Bay, has dropped nine of 10 overall with a 6.59 ERA and is in danger of its first six-game skid since May 11-16, 2011.

Those struggles could continue with Chris Capuano on the mound. The left-hander made his season debut in a 6-0 loss at Kansas City last Sunday, surrendering four runs and four hits with two walks in three innings. Capuano had been out with a quadriceps strain suffered in spring training.

"It's disappointing," Capuano said. "Physically, I feel great. It was nice to be out there competing. I hope to stay locked in for the whole game next time, not have a letdown."

At Yankee Stadium, Capuano is 0-1 with a 5.50 ERA in seven starts since being traded from Colorado on July 24. Fielder is 2 for 8 with two home runs against the veteran.

The Rangers' last defeat came with Yovani Gallardo on the mound, and that result has been all too common lately. Gallardo (3-6, 4.26 ERA) allowed four runs and 10 hits in Tuesday's 4-3 loss in Boston. The right-hander fell to 1-5 with a 4.63 ERA in his last six starts, but the record is in part due to a 2.31 run-support average in that time.

"I felt good," Gallardo said. "I have been feeling pretty good, but my command was a little off. I wasn't able to command my sinker and I hung some pitches up in the zone."

Chase Headley (7 for 19) has had the most success against Gallardo, while Mark Teixeira (0 for 6), Chris Young (2 for 16), Stephen Drew (2 for 16 with eight strikeouts) and Brian McCann (3 for 17) have all struggled.

While Gallardo's only career start against the Yankees was a loss May 9 of last year, giving up four runs in 5 2-3 innings, Capuano hasn't started against Texas since 2007.

The Rangers last scored at least 10 runs in three straight games in September 2009.

Orioles reliever ejected for using foreign substance
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

Baltimore Orioles reliever Brian Matusz was ejected in the 12th inning of Saturday night's game against the Marlins in Miami for using a foreign substance on the mound.

After Matusz retired the first two batters he faced, Marlins manager Dan Jennings came out of the dugout to speak with home plate umpire Jordan Baker. Crew chief Paul Emmel and Baker went to the mound along with Orioles manager Buck Showalter to inspect Matusz and then tossed him from the game.

Matusz was seen on television replays reaching for a forearm with his left hand between pitches. He was replaced by left-hander T.J. McFarland with the score tied 0-0.

The Marlins won in the 13th on a walk-off hit by Martin Prado.

Matusz is the second pitcher ejected this week for having a foreign substance on his arm. Milwaukee Brewers reliever Will Smith was tossed earlier in the week and later suspended for eight games by Major League Baseball. Smith appealed and pitched Saturday for the Brewers.

Rangers to activate Hamilton
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

Josh Hamilton is ready to make his 2015 season debut with the Texas Rangers.

The 2010 American League MVP is expected to join the Rangers in Cleveland for the start of a three-game series against the Indians.

The Rangers will activate Hamilton on Monday from the disabled list, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Saturday.

After the Rangers reacquired Hamilton from the Los Angeles Angels a month ago, he went to extended spring training in Arizona to continue his recovery from offseason surgery on his right shoulder. He then spent the past two weeks on rehab assignments with Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock.

In 28 at-bats with Round Rock, Hamilton hit .250 with two RBIs. Between Round Rock and Frisco, he had a combined .364 average.

"Josh is physically and game-ready to get started," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels told The Dallas Morning News. "The team is playing well, and we're looking forward to welcoming him to the club."

Hamilton's last scheduled game for Round Rock was rained out Saturday.

"I'm excited about it," said Hamilton, a five-time All-Star. "It's good to work hard and get back and get healthy and get mentally focused and get back to where I want to be."

Royals' Moustakas exits with bruised clavicle
The Sports Xchange

Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas was forced to leave Saturday night's game against the St. Louis Cardinals with a left clavicle contusion, the team announced.

A line drive off the bat of Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina struck Moustakas in his chest and neck area in the second inning. He stayed in the game but was pulled in the fourth inning after going 1-for-2 with a double.

The team said Moustakas is considered day to day with the injury. The Royals have the best record in the American League and can ill afford to lose his bat in their lineup.

Moustakas is hitting .327 with 15 RBIs in 155 at-bats this season.
