Stranger things have happened but it looks like McElwain will have to pull a rabbit out of a hat for the Gators to be contenders this season. Only ten starters return with just 4 of those on offense.

CoachCB may have some insite I'm missing but looks like a rebuilding year in Gainesville.

Hey CL, I haven't been reading much of this thread after a P12/SEC pissing contest got started on the 1st or 2nd page...

There's some talent in Gainesville....but there are 2 key problems: QB and OL. You can't win without those two pieces at least being slightly above average.

UF has talent on the OL and a 5-star coming in the fall....but who likes playing in the SEC w/ "potential" vs. "proven" talent?

The local Gainesville columnist (Pat Dooley) has stated that he's heard McElwain is not happy w/ the 2 primary QBs (Harris, returning starter....and Will Grier, 4-star redshirt freshman). There is a walk-on in the mix who's getting a lot of attention: Jacob Guy. He was a 3-star recruit who turned down several small school offers. He's 6'5 225 and has a "great" arm (from reports). He passed for nearly 3000 yards as a HS senior. It will be interesting to watch the QB battle shake out.

UF is fine at pretty much every position except OL. They are thin at LB, w/ only 7 scholarship players....but in this day and age teams usually play nickel a lot, so if they stay healthy in the fall I thin they'll be fine. OL and LB are big needs in recruiting....plus a few more QBs.

UF will have one of, if not the best, secondary in the SEC led by 1st Team All-American CB Vernon Hargreaves. The DL will be outstanding w/ a deep DT rotation and several outstanding DEs. I see very little drop off on D. Plus the new coaching staff w/ Collins (from Miss State) and Randy Shannon (former Miami head coach) leading the way the D seems fired up. There's a redshirt freshman I'm anxious to see, Tavon Bryan. He's a 6'5 275lbs DE from Wyoming. His dad was a Navy SEAL. Apparently he is a badass.

But, there are definitely problems on the O side of the ball. Thank Will Muschamp and the former staff for that. They did very little to develop or recruit offensive talent. They left a big hole and it's going to take more than 1 season to dig out.

I'm expecting no better than 8-4. If McElwain wins 9 regular season games he should be SEC Coach of the Year!

The faithful in Florida are extremely restless......the "heat" is on in Gainesville.....Pun intended. A 7-5 season will be another disaster; 8-4 will be a short-term fix/pacification, only if they finish strong with a "big-game" win (Georgia and, or FSU and a bowl win), with higher expectations for the following year.

Mack, that's not necessarily the truth. I think most UF fans are just happy to be rid of Muschamp....and most reasonable fans realize Muschamp left a big hole on the O side of the ball. Not many people I chat with expect much this season. Yes, 2016 is a different story...but that will all depend on finding a QB. And right now, there's only 2 legitimate QBs on the roster...and they didn't sign one in this past class. So it may take a few years. Again, this falls on Foley for not getting rid of Muschamp after the 4-8 disaster.

Ty, from what I'm hearing the Bama quarterback battle is wide open. Bateman has also been working at wide receiver. I have to think Coker will probably end up the starter even though he's not been special this spring.

Arkansas

The Razorbacks are expected to be improved this season but how much they improve on their 7-6 record last year is anyone's guess. The SEC schedule is maybe the most difficult in the conference. Matter of fact, the road schedule is nothing short of brutal. Arkansas will travel to Alabama, Ole Miss, LSU, Tennessee and Texas A&M. The teams coming to Fayetteville are no push overs...Auburn, Mississippi State and Missouri. I'm thinking they better win all four of their non-conference games (UTEP, Toledo, Texas Tech, UT Martin) or it could be a very long year.
The

do they return the majority of that O Line?

Florida will be very happy with a 6-6 season. I can see losses to Ole Miss, Tennessee and Florida State at home, South Carolina, Missouri and LSU away, and UGA in Jacksonville. They may even lose at Kentucky if they cannot find an offense. They could be that pathetic.

Auburn

Even though they're only three weeks into learning new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp's scheme, Auburn's defense outshined its offensive counterpart in the first scrimmage of spring. The impressive outing by the defense during Saturday morning's 90-play game like scrimmage included three interceptions, several fumbles and lots of hard hitting. The fierce hitting is something Malzahn wanted to emphasize during spring drills. He said he saw more big hits Saturday than all of last season. The defense held the offense without a passing touchdown and only one long run for a touchdown. Malzahn said he wasn't worried about the offense but certainly was impressed with the play of the defense. Muschamp may have failed as the head coach of Florida, but the man can coach up a defense.

Much like Alabama, Auburn lost a lot of talent on offense and is going to have to depend on it's defense to carry the team at the beginning of the season.

Totally agree with you. But, I could also see wins in each of those games. Only Missouri blew out Florida last year (thanks to Will Muschamp marching Jeff Driskel out over and over only to watch him throw INTs or fumble the ball). With Florida's D they can be in every game. The D will be fine. It's the Offense that is the question mark. Again, I suspect 8-4....anything better is gravy. Anything less will be disappointing.

When it rains it poors. More Bama injuries ...

Junior D-L A'Shaun Robinson suffered an ankle injury on Monday and was carted off the field. No word on the extent of the injury but Matt Zenitz of AL.com believes that the injury is not too serious. (lets hope not)

The formerly suspended Geno Smith DID return to the practice field.

Ranking the Big 12's offensive triplets. This is probably an accurate list. But Baylor might have the biggest question mark of the top 3 since they are breaking in a new QB. And they also lose OC Montgomery, who has been with Briles since his Houston days. Iowa State ranked ahead of Texas? LOL

[h=1]Ranking the Big 12's offensive triplets[/h]

  • i
    Jake Trotter, College Football

Having a triple-threat at the quarterback, running back and wide receiver positions usually translates into big-time offense. Look no further than the Dallas Cowboys of the 1990s. Behind quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith and wide receiver Michael Irvin, Dallas captured Super Bowls in 1992, 1993 and 1995.
In recent years, the Big 12 has boasted some dynamic offensive triplets, including West Virginia's Geno Smith, Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey in 2012 and Baylor's Bryce Petty, Lache Seastrunk and Antwan Goodley in 2013.
Who will have the league's best triplet in 2015? We rank them below:
1. TCU: QB Trevone Boykin, RB Aaron Green, WR Josh Doctson
Boykin is the top returning quarterback in the Big 12, and maybe the country. In a breakout 2014 season, he finished fourth in the Heisman voting and led the Big 12 in total offense. Green almost topped 1,000 yards last season despite backing up B.J. Catalon for more than half the season. As the starter in TCU's final five games, Green ran wild, with 544 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Doctson headlines a versatile and productive receiving corps that also includes Kolby Listenbee and Deante' Gray. Doctson was one of seven Big 12 receivers to go over 1,000 yards receiving; he also tied for the conference lead with 11 receiving touchdowns.

i
Seth Russell will enter Baylor's fall camp as the heir apparent at quarterback. AP Photo/Tony Gutierrez2. Baylor: QB Seth Russell, RB Shock Linwood, WR Corey Coleman
The Bears boast a 1,200-yard returning rusher in Linwood and a 1,100-yard receiver in Coleman; both All-Big 12 last season. The key will be Russell, who exited Baylor's spring session atop the depth chart ahead of Jarrett Stidham and Chris Johnson. Even though he served as Petty's backup the past two years, Russell is relatively experienced, with 11 career touchdown passes.
3. Oklahoma: QB Baker Mayfield, RB Samaje Perine, WR Sterling Shepard
With a clearer answer at quarterback, Oklahoma might boast the best offensive triplet combination in the country. Perine is back after rushing for more than 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns as a true freshman; he also set the FBS record with 427 rushing yards in one game. Shepard is an All-American-caliber talent. He was on pace to have a monster junior year until a groin injury slowed him during the second half of the season; he still finished fifth in the league in receiving. Quarterback is the unknown. After Trevor Knight and Cody Thomas both struggled as starters in 2014, Mayfield might be the favorite to win the job. But he hasn't played since 2013 and has just seven career starts.
4. Texas Tech: QB Patrick Mahomes, RB DeAndre Washington, WR Jakeem Grant
This unit has the potential to be outstanding. Washington was one of three 1,000-yard rushers in the Big 12 last season, and the first at Tech in 16 years. Over the past two years, Grant has put up 1,734 yards receiving; no returning Big 12 receiver has more during that span. Mahomes is the X factor. He's still battling Davis Webb for the starting job, but he showed great promise down the stretch, tossing 14 touchdowns to two interceptions in the Red Raiders' final three games.
5. Oklahoma State: QB Mason Rudolph, RB Rennie Childs, WR Brandon Sheperd
Like Mahomes, Rudolph was one of the big surprises in the conference at the end of the season. After his redshirt was pulled for the final three games, Rudolph threw for 853 yards while leading the Cowboys to wins against Oklahoma on the road and Washington in the bowl game. Sheperd developed an instant chemistry with Rudolph, too, emerging as his go-to target. Of his 737 receiving yards, 37 percent came in Oklahoma State's final two games. After being a backup the past two years, Childs is getting a crack to prove he can be the featured back this spring before highly touted junior college transfer Chris Carson arrives in the summer.
6. West Virginia: QB Skyler Howard, RB Rushel Shell, WR Jordan Thompson
Kevin White, who is likely to be a top 10-pick in the NFL draft, will be impossible to replace. But the Mountaineers should be able to lean on Shell even more between the tackles after he finished sixth in the Big 12 in rushing. Howard gave the Mountaineers a spark at quarterback with his wheels late in the year after taking over for an injured Clint Trickett. But he completed only 51 percent of his passes and is battling to keep the job from redshirt freshman William Crest Jr. Thompson is West Virginia's top returning receiver with 49 receptions and 598 yards receiving in 2014. This season, however, he won't have the benefit of defenses being focused on stopping White and Mario Alford.

i
Iowa State is banking on Sam B. Richardson to lead the Cyclones' offense in 2015. AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall7. Iowa State: QB Sam B. Richardson, RB Tyler Brown, WR Allen Lazard
Richardson is one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the league with 21 career starts. Health has been the issue for him, but when he's been 100 percent, he's been effective as a dual-threat passer. The Cyclones basically have two potential No. 1 options at receiver in Lazard and Quenton Bundrage, who missed all of the 2014 season with a knee injury. Running back is the biggest concern on the offense. Brown is the oldest back on the roster after projected starter DeVondrick Nealy unexpectedly left the team in the offseason. Redshirt freshman Mike Warren could challenge Brown for the primary spot.
8. Texas: QB Tyrone Swoopes, RB Johnathan Gray, WR Daje Johnson

The Longhorns are one big question mark offensively, notably at quarterback and receiver. Texas is hoping Gray will be closer to his explosive 2013 self with another year removed from the Achilles tendon tear he suffered late that season. He averaged just 4.36 yards per carry last year. Texas is also banking that Johnson can take over as a primary receiver following the departures of John Harris and Jaxon Shipley. Johnson has been in the doghouse for much of his college career, but coach Charlie Strong said he's "been floored" with the receiver's strong work ethic and positive attitude this offseason. Swoopes had his moments in 2014, but really struggled down the stretch. Strong said Swoopes is "way better" right now than he was at the end of last season. The Longhorns desperately need that to be the case.
9. Kansas State: QB Joe Hubener, RB Charles Jones, WR Deante Burton
No Big 12 team graduated more offensive firepower than Kansas State, which must replace quarterback Jake Waters and 1,000-yard receivers Tyler Lockett and Curry Sexton. Hubener, a former walk-on, is the favorite to take over for Waters. He has a dual-threat skill set and is entering his fourth year in the program. Jones is back after co-starting with DeMarcus Robinson last season. But he ranked just 21st in the Big 12 in yards per carry, which could open the door for a younger back such as Dalvin Warmack to push for the starting job. Burton, who had only 17 catches last season, is probably the favorite to take over for Lockett as the go-to receiver. Those are massive shoes he'll have to try to fill.
10. Kansas: QB Michael Cummings, RB Corey Avery, TE Kent Taylor
The Jayhawks have no returning receiver with more than 20 receptions last season. That could allow Taylor, a Florida transfer and ESPN 300 recruit coming out of high school, to emerge as Kansas' top pass-catcher. Avery, who finished second behind Perine among freshmen Big 12 rushers last season, and De'Andre Mann gave the Jayhawks a solid one-two punch at running back last season. Because he limited turnovers, Cummings gave Kansas some stability at quarterback during the second half of the season, but it's unclear how the new coaching regime will affect his standing.

The football team has officially reached the midpoint of its 15 allotted practices. The biggest question (QB) entering spring practice is still one of the great unknowns at the midpoint, though it appears a clear frontrunner could be emerging. During Friday's scrimmage, the quarterbacks rotated fairly evenly, with each one taking 30-40 snaps. Senior Jake Coker, seems to be getting the most work with the first team. It helps that what opened as a five-person competition appears to have been cut to four with the experimental move of sophomore Cooper Bateman to receiver. Coker's progress has allowed OC Lane Kiffin to make adjustments to better fit the quarterbacks abilities. The offense has been working at less under center and a much faster pace.

I look for at least one and possibility two QBs to transfer after spring drills.

The "QB battle" at Bama is a joke. That's Coker's job unless he gets run over by a truck this offseason....

To add on to Florida's woes, new HC Jim McElwain sees very little progress with the offense and has very few kind words for the offense so far. Not only does Florida appear to have major problems on offense, they also lose several key layers on defense. Unless something changes for Florida in a hurry, you may be looking at a 5th place team in the SEC East. Georgia and Missouri are well ahead of them. Tennessee could have a breakout season. South Carolina still has plenty of talent, compared to Florida.

The offensive line depth is a real concearn. Doug Nussmeier offenses (at least while at bama) were very run heavy and very dependent on the o-l and multiple platooning and substituting of personell , they can get by with an average or less qb (the ol' game manager) but if they cant run the ball they will have big problems.

Coach, I believe Coker will probably be the starter but he hasn't really separated himself from the others like you would want from your first team guy. The new kid (Barnett) from California is going to be a player...probably not this year but staff impressed with his abilities.

Yeah its been many moons since bama has started a true freshman at qb , but they say this kid has the game. ... I'm very curious to see if they red-shirt him , i'm thinking no (especially if there are transfers).

Clover , does the SEC have any rules against transferring within the conference ? I know ordinarily a coach wouldn't allow it , but just wondering if Saban would allow Bateman to transfer to UF to re-unite with his mentor Nussmeier. ... UF wont be on Bamas schedule for the remainder of Batemans playing time (unless they meet in the ccg) which at this point would seem very unlikely.
