The consolidation on a CXR could be PE or even cancer, so even CXR not always so clear cut. Lets not make light of pneumonia, Significant morbidity and mortality. A 68year old woman, presedential or not, should not be diagnosed on clinial symptos and signs, further investigation is always required.
we would have to know her exact symptoms, her white cells could be up, you are grasping once again, PE'S that show symptoms are more severe same with cancer. I don't know if a doctor would lie to cover up for a PE, PE can be detected faith quick to with a CT.of.the lung. once again you say significant morality and morbidity for healthy young adults. What's the percentages cause the.percentag of.full recovery is significantly higher than death. also when people die from pneumonia often times its the secondary diagnosis. people with cancer, immobility, rib fractures, aids, alzheimer's often don't die from that diagnosis but by pneumonia pretty much caused by those diagnosis
There's nothing we can do. Even if she crawls to the podium and passes out in the debates, she's our only option. You mention white cell count and that is a test.
There are many differential diagnosis here based on clinical findings alone, and PE and lung cancer are only two of those, and it is not possible to exclude either based on history and examination , without tests. The presenting symptoms and signs can be similar. Pneumonia often presents with pleuritic pain as does PE and cancer. Cough is a common symptom of lung cancer. I am saying that tests are required to confirm a clinical diagnosis of pneumonia in a 68 year old.
