Look at this way:

30k or almost so for a decent new car, like an Accord or CR-V

I can have a Fucking fleet for that

maybe :

an older Civic
an F-150
a motorcyle
a boat
maybe even a beater sports car ?

5k apiece. Something will always be running good ! Should be able to keep the Civic and F-150 (primary cars) running fine, got the bike and scooter as back-ups, and the 85 Mustang ( or whatever). I'd rather have the fleet of misc. decent cars over one 30k new car. I don't own this fleet, except for the F-150. I have an 07 CR-V, and a 2000 F-150, can't park all this stuff in a condo, but I would in an actual house. You'd have back-ups to your back-ups !

enough left over for a scooter

This fleet ideal is crazy sir by the time you tag each vehicle and insurance yearly and lite maintenance your spending enough money to drive a new vehicle.

cash here

wrote a check for 36k for the wife's enclave, that was painful

also traded in a year old mustang with 7k miles on it for a new car for myself last year, asked the guy if that was the least miles he's ever seen traded in, he said GOOD GOD YES!

Nothing ... I pay cash. I also NEVER buy a new car. I find one I want with low mileage, usually coming of a lease. That way I don't have a significant drop in value right after purchase.

We have leased the last 3 cars for my wife. I always get the lowest payment I can (haggle, haggle, haggle) and we do the 10,500 miles every year (the lowest we found they can do). We go way over the miles, probably 15,000 a year so when we turn it back in, 3 years later they don't bat an eye because we are leasing again.

While I might be losing a few bucks, I always have a warranty (or almost) and she gets a new van/suv/whatever every 3 years and is happy. We used to buy used or almost new but after 3-4 years we were selling it anyway.

For us to get a new car and I was 100% against leases this really seems to work well for us.

I buy low miles used for myself as I drive to work 30 miles each way every day. Too many miles to buy brand new but I still have a car payment and think I always will. I like driving nice cars so realize I will always have a car payment.

She is either funnin' or bunnin' or else I am runn

If you cannot pay for it in cash, don't buy it.

I have a 91 VW convertible. Got it for $2000. Great value with gas and a total babe magnet...

I can't beleive so many have such high car payments. As long as it runs, who cares.

What is this stupid ass rumor that girls will sleep with guys for their car? Who comes up with this? When you meet a girl, usually she doesn't know what you are driving.

U live in nowhere Oklahoma and have a car payment higher than the principal and interest on my house. Oh well, as long as it is worth it to you. I don't get it but I don't need too. Has nothing to do with me.

Nowhere OK? Don't know what that means...I travel a lot for work having so having a car with bluetooth for phone and music is a necessary, so that eliminates several options. When the weather is cold it's nice for my ass to get warmed up, when it's hot its nice for my ass to get cooled down (seat heaters and coolers) To each his own, cars and watches are my thing. I'm sure other people spend more money on eating fine food which I don't put much into.

Girs don't sleep with guys for their car. They sleep with guys so they can marry them and get the house.

I agree with Boxer. I borrowed money to buy my first two cars, one at age 18, the other one at 21. After that, always 100% cash. Don't borrow money for a depreciating asset.
