Which situations from the past come to mind when a team like that gets beat in G4 and loses in G5?
I'll tell you one thing right now.......DO NOT BET AGAINST THE A's on Thursday Night! You will be dooooooooooomed if you do.
What I like for Thursday: GIANTS, CARDINALS, A's
Not trying to hijack sky's thread at all, but...
1997 ALDS: Indians over Yankees. Yankees up 2-1 in the series, cruising in Game 4 (up 2-1). Indians don't even have a base runner reach past 1st base from the third through the 8th inning, I believe. Then in the bottom of the 8th, Sandy Almoar hits a HR that barely clears the fence and the crowd goes insane. Indians score in the bottom of the 9th to win the game 3-2, then they go on to win Game 5 and take the series. I remember reading in the Usa Today how "shocked" the Yankees were after Game 4.
2002 ALDS: Angels over Yankees. It wasn't game 5, but with the series tied 1-1, the Yanks had a 6-1 lead over LA early on in Game 3. Angels kept chipping away, eventually tie it, then have a big 8th inning to go up 2-1. Yankees never really recovered, and Angels go on to win the series the next day...and the World Series that year.
2003 NLCS: Steve Bartman game...no explanation necessary.
2004 NLCS: Astros have a 3-2 series lead, lose game 6 in extra innings and go on to lose Game 7.
1999 World Series: Braves down 2-0, head to Yankee Stadium...cruising along in Game 3, up 5-1. Yankees have absolutely nothing at all going on offense. They get a HR here, scratch out a run there and win late. Then the Yanks went on to win Game 4 (remember the Roger Clemens game?). I remember making a massive play on the Yankees for Game 4. You could just tell by looking at the faces of the Braves players that they checked out after losing Game 3.
Hell, last year's Game 6 in the World Series. Remember? Rangers up 3-2 in the series, up 2 going into the ninth inning of Game 6, Cards tie it, Rangers go up 2 in the top of the 10th, Cards tie it again the bottom of the 10th, then go on to win in the 11th. Right then I knew the Rangers were screwed for Game 7.
Again, there are just a few. It just seems in baseball like when a team gets kicked hard in the balls in a crucial moment, it's very difficult for them to turn around and recover right away. I can't even think of one instance where a team suffered a stomach punch loss in a game and then went on to win the next game and series...can anyone?
