Make it Macedonia

  • By: Ben Coley

Ben Coley previews Friday's World Cup qualifiers and fancies Macedonia to beat Wales in Skopje.

Macedonia can celebrate victory over Wales

England welcome Moldova to Wembley on Friday night in what will be a straightforward win, one which serves as nothing more than a warm-up for next week's trip to face Ukraine.
Roy Hodgson has made all the right noises, ordering his squad to avoid the type of complacency you've just read in my opening gambit, but that's what he has to do and we're able to remain firmly stationed in reality, which dictates a regulation success for the hosts.

  • 2pts FYR Macedonia to beat Wales at 5/4 -

Unfortunately, games such as these are about as useful for betting as they are for restoring confidence in Joe Hart's goalkeeping game. In fact, they're less so, because at least Hart will be able to boast a clean sheet when the final whistle is blown.
Speaking of clean sheets, for the heavy hitter who can get on with Ladbrokes their 9/20 about England winning to nil is too big. Other firms offer 1/3 or 4/11, a price which may still be generous about the hosts adding to their 5-0 victory in the reverse.
Moldova, to their credit, have discovered a scoring touch of late and even managed a goal at Ukraine, where they held firm for an hour before ultimately losing 2-1.
Given the fact that Ukraine have held England to a draw and Moldova followed that effort with a point at home to Poland, there's evidence sufficient to build a case for them causing some sort of problem for Hodgson's side.
However, England have never conceded against Moldova and I don't expect them to here. The question is simply how many, and while I'd lean towards lower over higher, it really comes down to how hard England push themselves and amounts to little more than guesswork.
Moving on, I can't help but feel the 5/4 quoted about Macedonia beating Wales is worth a small interest.
The hosts are a solid outfit and represent a real test for Chris Coleman's side. Just took at their record against England in recent years, a barometer we can accurately gauge - they've managed two draws and two one-goal defeats from four meetings.
More recently, Macedonia performed with great credit in two games against a highly talented Belgium side and secured a confidence-boosting friendly win against an in-form Bulgaria outfit in a friendly last time.
They've also drawn at Scotland and lost by just a goal in Russia and Ireland, so this is a side capable of competing and they just look a shade better than Wales despite currently sitting bottom of the group.
Coleman is delighted to have headline man Gareth Bale in the squad but confesses there's 'no chance' he can play 90 minutes, and I just wonder whether he might sit on the bench here in favour of a start against Serbia in Wales next week.
Either way, this is a player who has essentially missed most of pre-season and whose preparation for this fixture has been at best poor, so while his commitment to the cause is to be admired his impact against Macedonia may be insignificant.
Wales have already lost 6-1 away to Serbia and 2-0 at Croatia, and with Joe Allen and Neil Taylor already missing and Aaron Ramsey not 100 per cent, they may struggle in Skopje.
Scotland are already resigned to the fact they won't be in Brazil for next year's World Cup but we can expect them to give their best against Belgium.
The visitors have a wealth of attacking talent and have been popular each-way movers in the outright tournament market as their finest, among whom Eden Hazard, Marouane Fellaini and Christian Benteke stand out, continue to grace the Premier League with their brilliance.
Scotland showed in a friendly against England recently that they're not without ability, although clearly that friendly was of more significance than this qualifier.
Many will turn to 8/11 chances Belgium as their banker on the coupon and it's hard to argue with that, as there is a gulf in class between these sides and although they had to be patient, Belgium were value for their 2-0 win in the reverse.
I was keen to get with Northern Ireland in some way ahead of Portugal's visit, but I'm afraid the bookmakers aren't giving anything away.
The hosts have already drawn in Porto and gained a phenomenal victory over Russia last time, while Portugal have previous for sloppy away days as draws against Israel and Bosnia in recent years demonstrate. Indeed, they only scraped past Luxembourg 2-1 a year ago and that having fallen behind.
However, 5/2 about Northern Ireland and the draw just isn't quite big enough to tempt me and perhaps the value is with Portugal to win by a single goal at 5/2 .
Another to consider is in-form Helder Postiga to find the net at 11/8. He scored Portugal's goal in the reverse, has three goals in his last two games at club level including a brace against Barcelona, and has been on the scoresheet in five of Portugal's seven qualifiers so far.
The final game involving one of the home nations is perhaps the most competitive, with Ireland playing host to Sweden.
This is an absolutely massive week for Giovanni Trapattoni's side, who sit fourth but level on points with both second-placed Austria and third-placed Sweden in a Group C which Germany are predictably dominating.
Ireland go to Vienna to take on Austria next week and two wins from these two games would put them in an extremely strong position.
They face a dangerous Sweden side capable of running riot, but a 0-0 draw in the reverse shows what Ireland are capable of too and bar a 6-1 thumping by Germany they've performed with great credit so far.
I believe that Sweden are the better side at their best but that Ireland are more likely to produce, so if pushed it'd be the hosts in a game which sees both sides priced up at around the 7/4 mark.
It's certainly one which should make for entertaining viewing but as far as a bet goes, our focus is on Macedonia.

Late show for Ricky Burns

  • By: Simon Crawford
  • Last Updated: September 4 2013, 11:40 BST

Our expert Simon Crawford thinks Ricky Burns will chalk up a late stoppage victory over Raymundo Beltran at the weekend.

Ricky-Burns-l-v-Jose-Gonzalez-2013_2997767.jpg

Ricky Burns (l) had to dig deep in his last outing against Jose Gonzalez
Scotland's reigning WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns was forced to show all his fighting qualities to retain his title for a third time against dangerous Puerto Rican Jose Gonzalez back in May.
The Scot was behind on points when Gonzalez failed to come out for the 10th round in Glasgow complaining of a hand injury. It turned out to be a broken wrist - an injury which has kept him sidelined ever since.

  • 2pts Ricky Burns to win in rounds 7-12 at 5/1

It was certainly a wake-up call for the likeable Burns, 30, and I don't see him making the same sluggish start when he takes on Raymundo Beltran at the weekend, again on home soil in Glasgow.
Mexican Beltran, 32, has won 28 and lost six of his 34 bouts, most of which have taken place in the USA, and he is determined to make the most of his first world title shot after a childhood dominated by poverty.
The Mexican, the sparring partner of the legendary Manny Pacquiao, has only been stopped twice (2008, 2001) but his list of opponents should hardly strike fear into the heart of Burns (36-2 11KOs) who has operated at a much higher level against the likes of Roman Martinez, Michael Katsidis and British rival Kevin Mitchell.
The arrival of a baby son is added incentive for Burns who is targeting a unification clash with IBF champion Miguel Vazquez if he is successful.
The champion claims he has gone back to basics in his training camp to eradicate the mistakes made against Gonzalez and I think sheer fitness will tip the scales in his favour.
"Beltran hasn't come over here for nothing and he has not been one of the chief sparring partners of Manny Pacquiao for nothing," said Burns.
"I know I am going to have to bring my A-game.
"He likes to get involved in a bit of a war but that doesn't bother me.
"There will be times when In have to dig deep and stand my ground."
Burns likes to wear opponents down and I think that a combination of his own accurate work and Beltran possibly putting too much into the early rounds will see the Scot take over in the second part of the fight.
As all Mexican fighters are, Beltran is teak tough and punches hard with both hands. But he will struggle in the latter stages and with that in mind I'm taking the 5/1 being offered by for Burns to win between rounds 7-12.

The hidden gem when betting double digit MLB totals in 2013

When totals are 10 or higher this season in Major League Baseball, the 'under' is cashing in at a 60.7 percent clip making for a big winning percentage.

Teams have combined to play in 117 games with double digit totals this season. Those teams have combined to play 'under' the total 71 times with a total of 10 or higher for a record of 71-40-6.

When looking at the previous six seasons, the over/under across the board is roughly 50-50 when the total hits double digits. The under has cashed in at a rate of 48.3 percent from 2007 through to 2012.

In 2012, for example, clubs combined for a total of 387 games with double digit totals. Teams tallied 180 games going 'over' the total, as well as 180 going 'under' the total.

Keep your eyes peeled for the next spot to capitalize on this glaring trend.

UFC Fight Night 28: Teixeira has stats edge over Bader
By MMAODDSBREAKER.COM

The main event from Brazil at UFC Fight Night 28 features No. 2 ranked light heavyweight Glover Teixeira versus unranked Ryan Bader.

Teixeira was a late bloomer in MMA. He’s only four fights into his UFC career while already pushing the age of 34. Bader won TUF Season 8 at the age of 25, then went on a tear through the division until he became the last fighter to succumb to Jon Jones before Jones became the new (and current) champion.

The loss to Jones began a new career phase for Bader that would see him go 3-3 over his last six fights, with stoppages in all three losses. Bader has been facing big-name talent over the last few years, but has always fallen just short of contender status.

Teixeira, on the other hand, has been labeled a future contender despite not having faced Top-10 talent, which doesn’t change for this matchup. It’s an odd fight to make for a division searching for a new clear contender, but we’ll break it down here nonetheless.

The betting line favors Teixeira big at -440, with the underdog Bader at +350. The total is set at 1.5 rounds, with the over priced at -130 and the under at +100 for this five-round fight. Let’s take a look at the stats and see if we can’t find value in those lines.

Summary Stats:

Tale of tape:

Both fighters are now over 30, but not yet over 35 or with too many knockouts notched in their skulls. Both fighters are orthodox, but Teixeira will have a two-inch reach advantage. Though Bader is the true veteran of the Octagon in this bout, he has not led a UFC event.

Teixeira has been in the spotlight since entering the UFC and has had plenty of main card experience, including a co-main event fight against “Rampage” Jackson. Overall, the biggest takeaway here is Teixeira’s slight size advantage and favorable Brazilian crowd.

Striking:

A quick look at the numbers reveals that Teixeira is a very sharp striker. Having out-boxed former pro boxer Fabio Maldonado to the point of corner stoppage, as well as a three-round pick apart of “Rampage” Jackson, Teixeira has demonstrated excellent speed, precision and power for a big man. Having faced several stout chins in the past allowed him time to work and demonstrate these skills at a very high pace of output, even if perhaps it deflated his knockdown power metric.

Bader’s stats come in right about average for pace and below average in accuracy. His bright spots are his power and his defense. Bader’s knockdown rate is impressively more than twice the division average, meaning that when he does land on target, he has the power to make it count. Unfortunately, landing on target doesn’t happen often.

Defensively Bader has been better than average at avoiding strikes, but has also been dropped a few times. Teixeira’s strike avoidance is about average and he has yet to be floored.

The standup advantage has to go to Teixeira. He has the skills and size to make standing and trading an uncomfortable place to be for anyone, and Bader has been rocked before. Add to that the favorable crowd response for strikes by Teixeira. The longer this fight stays standing, the worse it will be for Bader.

Grappling:

While both fighters have good ground credentials, the difference will be Teixeira’s submission game versus Bader’s wrestling.

Bader has attempted takedowns early and often, but with a success rate that is exactly average. While Teixeira has had better success taking fighters to the mat, the more important metric might be his perfect takedown defense to date. Granted, it’s a small sample size, but there’s a reasonable chance that it will be Teixeira in top control if the fight hits the ground.

Once on the ground Teixeira has a full array of offensive weapons, while Bader as a wrestler will be more vulnerable on his back. Given the five-round nature of this fight, a wrestling-based neutralization of Teixeira will be hard to pull off in the long-run.

Analysis:

It’s hard not to favor Teixeira here. And with a five-round fight, it’s likely to end inside the distance. A straight up play will cost a lot of juice at -440. Bader clearly has the power to offer a “puncher’s chance”, which makes a play on Teixeira risky. But Teixeira inside the distance is -240, which is a reasonable expectation given Teixeira’s finishing history, the large weight class, and the extra rounds.
