Game: Dallas Stars @ Anaheim Ducks
Time: Wednesday 04/16 10:05 PM Eastern
Pick: Dallas +1.5 (-200) at 5Dimes

The Dallas Stars have the unenviable task of opening their first round in the NHL playoffs in Anaheim. The Ducks were amazing on home ice to start the season as they played to a 20-2 record here. It seemed like an impossibility to take them down. That changed from that point on with Anaheim finishing their last 19 homers with a losing record of 9-10. The biggest difference was that their opponents managed just 40 goals in the first 22, less than 2 goals per contest, to scoring 52 in the final 19 at nearly 3 per contest. The Stars recorded just six shutouts on the season, but two of those occurred in their last eight games, and over their final 13 they allowed a total of 2 goals per contest. That leaves them some wiggle room against an Anaheim team that simply has not been the same dominant team at home as they were early in the season. Dallas keeps it close in the opener, so take the Stars on the puckline.

Game: Chicago Cubs @ New York Yankees
Time: Wednesday 04/16 7:05 PM Eastern
Pick: Chicago +145 (moneyline) at 5Dimes

The New York Yankees did not make the playoffs last year, so they went out and did what the Yankees do - reloaded with high-priced free agents. The problem is that this is the oldest aged team in MLB and injuries will play a part in their season. McCann, Cervelli, Teixiera, Jeter, Volarte, Roberts, Ryan, and closer David Robertson are all dealing with injuries right now. The Yankees lineup has not produced as it is, and right now it is a short lineup. New York will be on the hook with perhaps a third-string catcher and a rookie pitcher for this one. This will also be a second game of a doubleheader, and with few options many may be forced to play in both games. The Cubs haven't found much magic, but they have in interleague play where they are 13-6 in their last 19, and are catching the Yankees short here. Take the Cubs in game 2.

MLB

Atlanta Braves (Teheran) at Philadelphia Phillies (Lee) (-135) 7:05 ET

3% Atlanta (+125)

The diametrically opposed history of these two starters against their respective opponents is all that limits this play. In 10 starts vs. the Braves of late, Lee is 6-3 with a 1.60 ERA. In 3 recent starts vs. Philly, Teheran is 1-2 with a 6.32 ERA. But, the current form of these teams and pitchers outweighs that historical perspective. The Braves enter as winners of 4 straight games, including 9-6 Monday night in a thrilling late inning victory vs. these Phillies. Atlanta has outscored the opposition in those 4 wins, 32-17. Despite last night’s rainout, look for that momentum to continue in this pitching matchup. Teheran has worked to a 2.84 ERA in a trio of starts, allowing 2 ER in each of those contests. Though Lee is 2-1, his ERA is 5.50. Lee continues to get smacked around by opposing batters, who are hitting .358 against him. In his most recent start, Lee allowed 8 hits and 3 runs in 6 IP in a 6-2 loss to Milwaukee. He can expect little help from a relief corps, who has an ERA of 5.53 for the season. Atlanta, a live underdog, against overpriced Lee!

Washington Nationals (Roark) at Miami Marlins (Fernandez) (-130) 7:10 ET

4% Miami (-130)

Washington limps in at 1-4 of late, after Miami snapped their 8 game losing streak with an 11-2 victory over Strasburg last night. Look for that momentum to continue for the Marlins on a field where they are 6-3 for the season. Young emerging teams first show their improvement at home. The pitching matchup clearly favors the Marlins in this one. In a pair of starts, Roark has posted a 5.91 ERA, including his most recent start against Atlanta, in which he allowed 5 runs in 4 2/3 IP of a 7-6 loss. All that keeps this from a higher rating is a perplexing start by Fernandez in his last outing. In a 6-3 loss to Philly, Fernandez lasted just 4 innings, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits. That, however, is far dichotomous to his history against this opponent and his work from this mound. In his most recent 2 outings against the Nats, Fernandez has worked 13 IP, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits with 13Ks. In 17 starts from this mound, Fernandez has yet to lose with a record of 11-0 and 1.14 ERA. Expect a huge bounce back from Fernandez at home tonight against the lineup he has dominated.

Colorado Rockies (De La Rosa) at San Diego Padres (Cashner) (-135) 10:10 ET

5% San Diego (-135)

The Colorado home/road dichotomy continues. At their Coors Field home, the Rockies are averaging 7.5 runs with a .354 BA. Send them on the highway and it is a totally different story. On the road this season, the Rockies are averaging just 3.6 runs with a .256 BA. Last night’s 3-2 road victory by Colorado improves their away record to 3-6, but sets up a negative situation. Since the start of 2013, Colorado is 7-22 (0-2 TY) on the road following a victory. De La Rosa has little to show for his 3 starts. The results are 0-2 with a 9.69 ERA, including allowing 6 runs in 4 1/3 IP of his previous start. That is far divergent from the recent outing of Cashner, who, in a 6-0 victory vs. Detroit, allowed just 1 hit with 11 K. That drops his ERA for the season to just 1.29. In 15 IP from this mound this season, Cashner has allowed just 1 run. With the Padres still on a positive uptick of 4-2, we ride that momentum with their hot starter against a visiting Colorado team in a negative situation, with a struggling starter.

Cleveland Indians (McAllister) at Detroit Tigers (Sanchez) (-145) 7:05 ET

4% Detroit (-145)

Cleveland had a huge turnaround season last year. The Tribe went from 68-94 in 2012 to 92-70 in 2013, highlighted by winning their final 10 games of the season. That included a 41-40 road mark. One thing they did not reverse, however, was the results vs. Detroit. The Tigers won the season series, 15-4. Detroit has now won 34/44 recent games against Cleveland on this field. The Tigers posted a 51-30 record at home last year. Much of that profit followed a defeat, where Detroit went 20-7 on this field following a loss. That situation occurs tonight as the Tigers lost 5-1 at San Diego on Sunday. With 3 days to adjust, there will be little effect of the 3 hour time difference. Both starters tonight have begun the season in good current form. That will not be the case tonight, if the history book is an indicator. In a trio of starts last season against Detroit, McAllister went 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA. In his most recent 6 starts against Cleveland, Sanchez is 4-0 with a 2.13 ERA. Let history be thy guide as we follow Detroit to the winners circle.

Oakland A’s at LA Angels (-115) 10:05 ET

4% Oakland (+105 ACTION)

This must be the dog of the day! With projected starters Milone (Oakland) and Skaggs (LAA) each coming off forgettable starts, we focus on the performance of these teams in recent times. In the last two seasons, Oakland recorded 190 wins, the best in the American League. This year, they are 10-4, again posting the best mark in the AL. In the past two seasons, Oakland went 44-37 on the road. That combined 88-74 road mark, again the best record in the AL. This year, Oakland is 7-1 away with their only loss to King Felix in Seattle. They have proven their late game mettle each of the last two evenings with 1 run victories over the Angels. Much was expected from LAA when the signed big names to big money contracts, just prior to 2013. That move has not paid dividends to date. The Angels struggled to a 78-84 season last year, including 39-42 on this field. Nothing has changed to start 2014. LAA is 6-8 for the year, including 2-6 at home. No reason they should be favored over Oakland, making the A’s your value road dog of the day.
