Many pundits and sports betting experts say the Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy to win in sports, because hockey combines the long playoff schedule of the NBA with the physical punishment of the NFL. The difficult journey begins tonight, as the conference quarter-final matchups begin. Let’s make some picks.

Senators @ Penguins
Tonight, 7:00 p.m. ET
NHL odds; Senators +175, Penguins -210
The Sens finished strong, going 6-1-1 over their last eight games, and they split the season series with Pittsburgh. But I feel like Pens were saving their energy down the stretch and will really let loose tonight – especially because they’ll want to test Ottawa goalie Brian Elliott in his first career playoff game. Look for big games from at least one of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin as the Pens put a Game-1 scare into Ottawa.
Today’s free pick: Penguins -210

Flyers @ Devils
Tonight, 7:30 p.m. ET
NHL odds: Flyers +160, Devils -180
I smell a sportsbook upset tonight. The Flyers are riding an emotional high after beating the Rangers in what was essentially a play-in on Sunday. They’ve won six of seven against the Devils, including the last three meetings. Look for Mike Richards and the Philly forwards to throw their bodies at the small New Jersey defense and steal Game 1.
Today’s free pick: Flyers +160

Red Wings @ Coyotes
Tonight, 10:00 p.m. ET
NHL odds: Red Wings -120, Coyotes +100
The Coyotes should be amped up to finally see a (hopefully) full building but the Red Wings are so experienced that even the rowdiest crowd likely won’t faze them. They dominated over the last month and a half of the season and I’m not convinced Phoenix’s lumbering blueline can handle Detroit’s smooth-skating forwards tonight.
Today’s free pick: Red Wings -120

Avalanche @ Sharks
Tonight, 10:30 p.m. ET
NHL odds: Sharks -240, Avalanche +200
I definitely see the gritty, speedy Avs stealing a game or two in this series – but not tonight. The HP Pavilion will be rockin’ and the culture shock of playoff hockey for first-timers like Matt Duchene, Chris Stewart and even goalie Craig Anderson could be overwhelming. Joe Thornton and the Sharks should give Colorado a rude welcome to the postseason tonight, though I do expect Colorado’s kids to recover in Game 2.
Today’s free pick: Sharks -240

Regular season NBA odds wrap up this evening with a ton of important games on the slate. The Chicago Bulls are fighting for their playoff lives—a win, and they’re in—while the Suns and Jazz are fighting for crucial seeding in the West. Here are your free picks for tonight’s huge games.

Chicago Bulls (-2.5) at Charlotte Bobcats – 8:00 p.m. ET

The Bulls (40-41, 41-38-2 ATS) have picked up their play for a late playoff push. They’ve won seven of their past 10 games, including a 101-93 victory over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday. That sense of urgency has created solid if unspectacular results at the sportsbook; Chicago has covered six of its last 10 games on NBA odds. Hitting the road should make bettors feel better, too—the Bulls are 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games away from home.

Charlotte (44-37, 44-36-1 ATS) has the seventh seed locked up and little to play for. The Bobcats have been solid, though, and are enjoying a 9-3 run. They’re coming off a 105-95 win in New Jersey. Despite the impressive run, Charlotte has been a letdown for sports betting fans. The Bobcats are an underwhelming 4-6 in their last 10 games against the spread. And while Charlotte is 6-4 ATS in its last 10 home games, the team has been unreliable at Time Warner Cable Arena—they’ve alternated ATS wins and losses for six straight home games. They lost their last one.

This is simple. Chicago has something to play for; Charlotte doesn’t.

Pick: Chicago

Phoenix Suns at Utah Jazz – 10:30 p.m. ET

The Suns (53-28, 47-32-2 ATS) are tearing through the NBA right now; they’ve won 13 of their past 15 games and are coming off a 123-101 romp against Denver on Tuesday night. They’ve delivered results on NBA betting lines, too, with a 7-3 run against the spread. Playing on the road is a lately shaky, however. The Suns are 6-4 against the spread in their last 10 games away from home, but they’ve dropped two straight.

Utah (53-28, 49-29-3 ATS) has been nearly as good over the same stretch, going 12-3. The Jazz have won back-to-back games after beating Golden State 103-94 last night. They haven’t enjoyed the same kind of success at the sportsbook, though. Utah is a lacklustre 5-5 against the spread in its last 10 games on NBA odds. Playing at home should make a difference—Utah is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 games at EnergySolutions Arena, though it has lost two of three.

Utah will have an idea of whether or not it can grab second place because of the Dallas game earlier this evening—the Jazz need a Mavs loss. Either way, they’ll want at least third. Take the Jazz.

Pick: Utah
