Gold Sheet
★★★College of Charleston 66 - WICHITA STATE 64—Apparently,
Wichita has taken HC Gregg Marshall’s impassioned plea to embrace the NIT
experience (which was a downer for the Shockers last season when they lost to
Nevada in the first round) to heart, blowing out Nebraska and then beating the
tortured Seth Greenberg and his VPI team in OT to advance. But extending the
margin on a resolute Charleston side might not be easy.
The historic Roundhouse venue is not likely to distract Bobby Cremins’
Cougars, who have covered the spread handily in close losses at ACC Maryland
and North Carolina, won SU at Tennessee in late December and at Cleveland
State in the last round of this tourney, as well as having won the top seed in the
SoCon Tourney and KOing NIT holder Dayton in the first round of this event last
week. Moreover, Cremins has been able to locate some support for highscoring
G Andrew Goudelock (23.5 ppg), whose uncharacteristic “off” effort (3
of 12 FGs) at Cleveland State was camouflaged by three other DD scorers,
including fellow sr. G Donavan Monroe (19.3 ppg last 3), who’s finishing his
career with a flourish.
Although impressed by Wichita’s depth, which is compensating for its lack
of a legit go-to threat (6-8 J.T. Durley its only DD scorer at 11.3 ppg), we have
to wonder if the Shockers (only 5-8 as home chalk) can continue their hot threepoint
shooting (21 of 46) in the first two rounds, especially after being ice cold
beyond the arc (11 of 43) in the recent MVC Tourney. Any regression could
jeopardize the Shockers’ chances to cover the considerable impost...or even
survive.
