NBA Game of the Day: Lakers at Nuggets

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (7, 204.5)

The Los Angeles Lakers have achieved the first of their many goals for the remainder of the season. Next up is a victory over the host Denver Nuggets on Wednesday. Los Angeles made a triumphant return to the .500 mark on Christmas Day, getting 34 points from Kobe Bryant and 11 assists from Steve Nash in a come-from-behind win over the New York Knicks. The Lakers have won five straight but will be in tough to extend that run against a Nuggets team sporting an 8-1 home record.

Denver is in the midst of four games in five days, and it kicked off the grueling stretch with a 112-100 loss to the red-hot Los Angeles Clippers. The Nuggets were done in by a 42-point second quarter as they fell for just the second time in the last six games. Considered one of the early-season contenders for a top-four seed in the Western Conference, Denver has lacked the consistency of front-runners Oklahoma City, San Antonio and Memphis and are struggling on the defensive end.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, Time Warner SportsNet (Los Angeles), Altitude (Denver)

ABOUT THE LAKERS (14-14): Much has been made about the struggles of the Lakers' offense despite the addition of two star free agents in Nash and Dwight Howard and a new head coach in Mike D'Antoni. Yet, while it remains to be seen how the Lakers' loaded lineup will jell on the offensive end, it has shown flashes of stardom on defense. Los Angeles limited the Carmelo Anthony-led Knicks to just 14 fourth-quarter points, allowing Bryant and Nash to pull out the victory. With three defensive stalwarts on the roster in Bryant, Howard and Metta World Peace, Los Angeles is a tough team for most opposing scorers to face.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (15-14): Teams have figured out that one of the best ways to handle the Denver defense is to fire away from beyond the arc. The Nuggets are fifth-worst in the NBA in 3-point shooting percentage against, and the Clippers exploited that weakness by connecting on 11 of 25 attempts in their Christmas Day victory. Denver continues to roll along offensively despite Danilo Gallinari's recent struggles. The Italian forward is mired in a horrible slump, having made just six of his last 31 shot attempts - highlighted by a 1-for-10 clunker against the Clippers, his second such effort in three games.

TRENDS:

* Lakers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a win.
* Nuggets are 5-1 ATS in their last six home games.
* Over is 7-1 in Lakers’ last eight vs. NBA Northwest foes.
* Over is 4-0 in Nuggets’ last four vs. NBA Pacific opposition.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Lakers have dominated the head-to-head series of late, eliminating Denver from the 2012 playoffs and cruising to a 122-103 victory in their first meeting this season.

2. Denver is 3-12 when allowing 100 or more points.

3. Bryant averages 24.8 points in 55 career regular-season games against the Nuggets.

LITTLE CAESARS PIZZA BOWL

Ford Field, Detroit, Michigan

Western Kentucky (-5½) Central Michigan (57½) 6:30 PM

Western Kentucky’s head coach is on the move as Willie Taggart took the
South Florida position after leading the Hilltoppers to their first bowl game.
Bobby Petrino has been hired to take over, leaving the remaining staff and
bowl coach Lance Guidry in an awkward position. Central Michigan will be
the team that is pointed to as the least deserving in the bowl picture with
Louisiana Tech and Middle Tennessee State left out. The Chippewas went
just 6-6 on the season and while the MAC was a strong league this season
Central’s four MAC wins came against teams with a combined 8-40 record.
Despite a weak schedule Central Michigan allowed over 33 points per game
and 6.1 yards per play. Western Kentucky should have a big edge on
defense, particularly against the run and the Hilltoppers very easily could
have had an even stronger record with four of five losses coming by a
combined total of 19 points. Western Kentucky was also the only team in the
Sun Belt to beat eventually champion Arkansas State. The location certainly
favors Central Michigan playing close to home but the Chippewas lost four
home games this season and this is a team that has failed to cover in 14 of
the last 16 games as an underdog. Central Michigan lost in the last two times
they played in this bowl game and even with the changing coaching staff, an
upperclassmen heavy Western Kentucky team will be fired up to play in the
first ever bowl game for the program. WESTERN KENTUCKY BY 10

Central Michigan + Western Kentucky OVER 56
(System Record: 42-4, lost last 5 games)
Overall Record: 42-49-4

Can someone please explain this system? The system record applies toward games after they have 3 losses in a row, but doesn't this include every loss after 3 as well? The system record was 42-3, so shouldn't losses 4 & 5 put them at 42-5? And isn't each play now until they win considered a system play? Thanks.

Clips covered and won by 12. Only way he can claim a win is if he was on LAC...

Jordan was on the Clips. He probably was cutting and pasting Winner of Denver at LA Clips and just grabbed 'Denver'. He play was posted here early yesterday. I've seen him do that a few times on his website.

LITTLE CAESARS PIZZA BOWL
Ford Field • Detroit, MI
W Kentucky over C Michigan by 3
At fi rst glance, we did a double (or in this case a pizza, pizza) when we
realized that all four Sun Belt bowl teams have been installed as favorites
this season. Of course – maybe outside of Kent State – their foes would
sniffi ng a bowl had Ohio State, Miami, Penn State and North Carolina not
been handcuffed by the NCAA. Still, we won’t be riding ‘coach’ with this
Sun Belt chalk (or any for that matter) despite the fact that sub .600 MAC
bowlers are 1-7 SU and ATS. Nope, after HC Willie Taggert bolted for sunny
South Florida, the Hilltoppers will be guided by defensive coordinator
Lance Guidry and we’ll look for the veteran Chippewas (17 returning
starters) to take advantage. As it is, 17-returning starter bowl dogs of 4
or more points are 16-9-1 ATS. Even better, six-win teams who won six or
less games the previous year are 5-0 ATS as bowlers off back-to-back SU
wins and Sun Belt favorites off a SU win are 1-5 ATS versus a foe off a SU
win. While our College Bowl Stat Report reminds us that the Chips are an
overmatched 0-5 SU, ATS and ‘ITS’ versus fellow bowlers this season, we’ll
point out that the men from Mt. Pleasant won their fi nal three games
to become bowl eligible and that tells us they want to be at this nearby
Detroit ‘Pizza’ party. Grab the dogs as there are more than enough pies,
err points, to go around.
