Gold Sheet
UNC Asheville 71 - Arkansas-Little Rock 70—This is what an NCAA playin
game is all about! Arkansas-Little Rock (SE16) finished 7-9 in the 12-team
Sun Belt Conference, lost its last three contests to end the regular season, then
won four games in four days in the Sun Belt Tourney to finish 19-16 and earn its
first big to the Big Dance since 1990! Sr. G Solomon Bozeman, the Sun Belt
Player of the Year, was a poor man’s Kemba Walker in that tourney, averaging
22 ppg in leading the Trojans in all four games. UNC-Asheville (E16) stood a
more respectable third in the Big South at the end of the regular season, then
won three straight in the league tourney to finish 19-13. Thus, Asheville’s
Bulldogs are favored in this game (even though they lost 96-49 earlier TY at
Ohio State). They have the tallest big man in this game in 6-10 soph D.J.
Cunningham, but he is usually not a dominating force (9 ppg, 7.5 rpg). UALR
can be hurt on the boards, but the Trojans are a very veteran unit, with a
combined ten senior and juniors. And, at times, the treys flow freely (6-0 Little
Rock sr. Matt Mouza canned 8 of 10 vs. Denver back in February). Asheville’s
Bulldogs are good thieves (sixth in the nation in steals). But with the Trojans
owning Bozeman and other veteran guards, prefer to take the points in this affair
“featuring” happy-to-be-there teams.
NCAA EAST REGIONAL
NCAA Play-in game at UD Dayton Arena, Dayton, Ohio
Clemson 63 - Uab 62—Can’t excuse either of these play-in teams for
entering Dayton with big chips on their shoulders after their inclusion in these
proceedings was almost universally condemned by the TV talking heads,
especially the bald ones (that’s you, Dickie V.). Clemson (E12) might believe it
was disrespected after being forced to go the play-in route, but UAB (E12) really
has a point to prove after its credentials were completely trashed in most media
outlets. Players sometimes listen to that stuff.
The Blazers own the great equalizer in this clash with 5-8 waterbug PG
Aaron Johnson (7.7 apg and C-USA MVP), while 6-10 C Cameron Moore (14.3
ppg & 9.4 rpg) can at least hold his own with the Tigers’ main interior threat,
Jerai Grant. And 6-5 sr. Jamar Sanders (17.7 ppg) has taken over many UAB
contests this season. Note that Clemson found ways to drop a lot of close
games (lost 8 by 6 points or fewer), as the team continues in adjustment phase
to new HC Brad Brownell’s modified Princeton style, a far cry from predecessor
Oliver Purnell’s uptempo preference. The UD Arena venue is familiar to
Brownell (who coached across town at Wright State), and the Tigers’ defense
(60.4 ppg & 39.8% FGs) should allow them to advance, but the Blazers’ road
prowess (9-6 SU away from home) makes not-insignificant spread worth a look.
