Pittsburgh @ VIRGINIA TECH
VIRGINIA TECH +4½ -106 over Pittsburgh

We’re not even convinced that the Panthers should be favored here but the reason they are is because they’re six games over .500 at 13-7 while the Hokies are just 8-11 overall. Furthermore, the Panthers are 3-4 in conference play while Va Tech has yet to win a conference game. Combine all that and you have your false favorite and we’ll break it down even a little further. Pitt’s three ACC victories have occurred against Boston College, Florida State and Georgia Tech. Combined, that trio is 3-17 in conference play. The victory over B.C. occurred in OT by one point while the victory over Tech was in Pittsburgh and was by just five points. Pitt has not only lost to every good team they have played but they have been blown out five times in their seven losses and one other was by nine points. The only loss in which Pitt had a chance to win in was its four-point loss against Hawaii. This is a bad ACC team that cannot be favored in Virginia Tech because they are no better than the Hokies, especially in a road environment. Incidentally, Pitt has a home game on deck against #8 Notre Dame.

The Hokies are indeed 0-6 in the conference but they are on the verge of a win. Among those six losses were a two-point loss to Syracuse and a three-point loss to #2 Virginia. The Hokies have played #6 Louisville, #15 North Carolina, #8 Notre Dame and #2 Virginia in their past four games. That’s four straight games against four outstanding defensive teams. After trying to penetrate those four defenses, Va Tech should find the going so much easier when taking a huge step down in class against this weaker bunch. Va Tech has some shooters and they finally have a ripe to get beat intruder visiting. No team wants to go winless in conference play and this is really a great chance for the well-supported Hokies to get off the mattress at home. It is so damn tempting to play the Hokies on the money line but the 4½-points being offered is a significant margin that provides us with some wiggle room. Don’t be afraid to play the money line in a couple of small parlays in this distinct upset possibility.
