30 DIME OVER Rockets/Blazers - True, nobody thinks the Rockets will have a near-perfect game offensively in Game 2, as they did in Game 1, but this total is absurd when you look at how these two have went at it against one another in the past four meetings – all this season. The proof is in the pudding: 189, 190, 192, 200. That’s an average of 192.7 points per meeting. In fact, the last five meetings have soared past the number, while four of the last five in Portland have gone high.



With Houston, this is a team that has gone high in three of its five outings, and with the Blazers, they’ve done the same in there of their last five. I know both are capable of playing defense at any given time, but Portland’s reaction to Game 1 is to make adjustments offensively, to counter another big burst of offense by Houston. Like I said last night about Boston, it’s not about stopping an offensive force, it’s more so about scoring your own share.



Portland is on over runs of 5-0 when it takes on a winning team, 4-0 in the conference quarters, 4-1 as the home chalk and 5-1 when laying points in this range. On the flipside, Houston is on over runs of 4-0 against winning teams, 8-2 on Tuesdays, 4-1 when catching points in this range and 12-4 after winning by more than 10 points.



Fact is, this is the playoffs, and these two are gong to shoot the lights out tonight. Forget defense, this is a number that should soar.



10 DIME PADRES (WITH Peavy and Cain) - Since losing to the Dodgers on Opening Day, Jake Peavy has looked great. He’s 2-1 with a 3.98 ERA and already manhandled the Giants on April 11, striking out 10 and coming within two outs of a complete game in a 6-3 home win. The win improved the veteran right-hander to 12-8 with a respectable 3.30 ERA in 24 career starts against the Giants.



I’m still not a believer of this surprising Padres start, as they still might end up as bad as we all thought they would, but tonight with Peavy toeing the slab we have a very good chance. He should have plenty of run support since San Francisco-starter Matt Cain is 0-5 with a 3.59 ERA in 10 starts against the Padres since September 2006. Lay the slim chalk on the highway with this one.
