Two teams that have emerged as early favorites to challenge the Lakers in the Western Conference collide in Dallas in the second half of TNT’s Thursday night doubleheader. The Spurs (27-4, 18-12-1 ATS) are sizzling, having won 12 of 13, including a 97-82 beatdown of the Lakers Tuesday. San Antonio is fourth in the NBA in scoring at 105.94 points per game The Mavericks (24-6, 18-10-2 ATS) are right behind their Lonestar State rivals, but are coming off of a disappointing home loss to Toronto and might not have their superstar against the Spurs.
Dirk Nowitzki missed the Raptors loss with a sprained knee. Nowitzki says he wants to play against the Spurs, but isn’t sure if he’ll be cleared by the medical staff. The Mavericks won in San Antonio, 103-94 on Nov. 26 in the teams’ only meeting this season and have beaten the Spurs in four of the last five games. Nowitzki had 26 points and the Mavs took advantage of 17 Spurs’ turnovers in the late November win. Parker struggled in that game, scoring just nine points. Manu Ginobili tried to pick up the slack with 31, but Dallas exploded for 32 points in the fourth quarter for the win. The Spurs are 1-7 ATS in their last eight games in Dallas.

• NOTES & TIPS
-------------------
--Dallas Mavericks beat writer Eddie Sefko expects Dirk Nowitzki to miss Thursday’s big game against San Antonio. Nowitzki sprained his knee in Monday’s win over Oklahoma City, but said after the game that he didn’t believe the injury was serious. X-rays came back negative, but Notwitzki also said the knee had been bothering him for about two weeks, so Dallas may proceed with caution.
--Everything is up in the air for the Portland Trail Blazers right now. Nobody knows what’s going on with Brandon Roy’s knee from one night to the next and trade rumors continue to swirl around the club. The latest is that instead of accepting a trade to a non-contending team, Marcus Camby would rather retire. Speculation is that Portland is looking to move both Camby and Andre Miller as the Blazers search for consistency.
"Camby wasn't happy about the rumor and would not take kindly to being traded to Charlotte or any other non-contending team,” an ESPN source reports. "He's made plenty of money. He'd rather play, but he's at the point in his career where he doesn't want to get bounced around from team to team. If he's traded, it would have to be to a contender.”
--Kevin Garnett suffered a right leg injury during the first quarter of the Celtics' eventual 104-92 loss to the Detroit Pistons at the Palace of Auburn Hills. In a play eerily similar to the one nearly two years ago in Utah—the play which eventually cost KG his season and the Celtics a chance to defend their title—Garnett went up for an emphatic jam on a lob pass and came down hobbling and in clear pain. At first, it looked terrible for Celtic nation.
There wasn't a single fan whose mind didn't jump to Garnett's surgically repaired right knee, especially as that's what it looked like he was favoring. As the game progressed and video showed Garnett hobbling into the locker room and eventually out of the stadium, the thoughts of yet another championship run cut short by injuries loomed all the larger. However, towards the end of the game "encouraging" news surfaced. Celtics trainer Ed Lacerte diagnosed KG with a lower leg injury, not a knee injury. An x-ray revealed no fracture in the bone. While the Celtics still have not received an official diagnosis, and KG has yet to undergo an MRI, all signs point to a more promising prognosis than what was initially thought.

*** NEW YORK @ ORLANDO (-7.5, O/U 212) ***
------------------------------------------------------------
The New York Knicks will finish up a tough two-game tour of the Sunshine State tonight hoping for more than a moral victory when they take on the Orlando Magic at Amway Center. The Knicks came up a little short in Miami on Tuesday, when Dwyane Wade poured in a season-high 40 points and pulled down nine rebounds, as the Heat held off New York, 106-98.
Amare Stoudemire finished with 30 points and seven rebounds for the Knicks, who have dropped four of six overall. Stoudemire has now scored 20 or more points in 16 straight games, the longest such streak for New York since Patrick Ewing's 17 consecutive games from Jan. 8 - Feb. 6, 1994. Wilson Chandler ended with 21 points and six rebounds for the Knicks, who also got 15 points and five assists from Raymond Felton.
Miami held a 53-40 margin at the half, and took an 80-65 lead into the fourth. Trailing by 11 at 95-84, the Knicks used a 10-2 run to make things interesting. Stoudemire's tip-in followed by Felton's technical free throw made it a 97-94 contest with two minutes remaining. Wade stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer at the other end, however, as Miami earned the victory. "They started the game hot. They played with a lot of energy and were aggressive," Stoudemire said. "We started off slow, but we gave a lot more energy in the second half."
The Magic, meanwhile, have started to surge again, winning their fourth straight contest in Cleveland on Tuesday when Jason Richardson made four three-pointers en route to 20 points, as Orlando used a big fourth quarter to take down the struggling Cavaliers, 110-95, at Quicken Loans Arena. Gilbert Arenas had 22 points and 11 assists off the bench and fellow reserve J.J. Redick added 14 points for the Magic, who have won four in a row after dropping eight of nine.
Jameer Nelson donated 13 points, six assists and five rebounds, while Dwight Howard tallied 12 points with six rebounds and Earl Clark also chipped in 12 points. "We've put together our team to shoot the ball and the Cavaliers are a team that give up a lot of threes at a high percentage," Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy said. Orlando has won three straight and six of the past seven in the series.

*** SAN ANTONIO (-2.5, O/U 191.5) @ DALLAS ***
----------------------------------------------------------------
Two of the best teams and fiercest rivals in the NBA get together Thursday night in Big D, as the Mavericks play host to the San Antonio Spurs at American Airlines Center. The Spurs are a league-best 27-4 and have won 12 of their last 13 games, including Tuesday's decisive 97-82 triumph versus the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers in the Alamo City. Tony Parker led the way with 23 points and DeJuan Blair was busy with 17 points and 15 rebounds, as the Spurs limited LA to 28 percent shooting in the second half.
"We played excellent team defense, and that's where we had been lacking. That was the most important part of the night for us," said Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich. "Tony Parker put us on his shoulders for a lot of the game, so we were able to hang in there even though Manu and Timmy didn't have their best offensive night." Richard Jefferson added 15 points and seven rebounds, while George Hill chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds. Hill was playing in his second game after missing four straight because of a right big toe sprain. Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili combined to score 11 points for San Antonio, which went 10-0 at home in December. Duncan has scored in single digits in three of four games since posting a double-double four consecutive times.
Dallas is dealing with an injury to All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki, who's listed as questionable with a sprained right knee. In Monday's win at Oklahoma City, Nowitzki departed the game just 2:50 into the second quarter. The former MVP came down awkwardly on his ankle after hitting a jumper, and he left the contest after completing the three-point play. He finished with 13 points, two shy of Gary Payton (21,813) for 24th place on the NBA's all-time scoring list. "This is a weird injury, I've never had it," Nowitzki said postgame. "For a rolled ankle I probably would have walked it off and came right back out there, but this is something else. We're going to look at it and see where it is tomorrow. It's kind of day-to-day from this point."
Nowitzki did not play in Tuesday's 84-76 loss to the visiting Toronto Raptors in the opener of a brief homestand, as Jason Terry scored a game-high 18 points, Caron Butler added 15 and Shawn Marion finished with 12 points in place of Nowitzki in the starting lineup. It was Toronto's first win as the visitor in this series since December 1999. "I think Toronto played a great game, and we were subpar," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said after his team posted a season-low in points. "We got off to a sluggish start, particularly defensively."
The Mavericks, who are 13-5 at home this season and have won 17 of 19 overall, sit just 2 1/2 games behind the Spurs in the Southwest Division. San Antonio is 9-2 as the guest. Dallas already defeated the Spurs this season by a 103-94 score at the AT&T Center back on Nov. 26. It has won four straight and six of the last nine meetings with San Antonio, losers in three straight trips to Big D.

*** UTAH (Pick, O/U 188) @ PORTLAND ***
-------------------------------------------------------
A pair of Northwest Division inhabitants renew their rivalry tonight in the Rose City, where the Utah Jazz will pay a visit to the Portland Trail Blazers. Utah is a half-game up on Oklahoma City for the division lead and is aiming for its fifth straight win on the road. It is 11-4 away from Salt Lake City this season and is coming off Wednesday's 103-95 win at the Clippers in which Al Jefferson posted a season-high 31 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for his 12th double-double.
Deron Williams had 16 points, six rebounds and seven assists, while Gordon Hayward added 17 points for the Jazz, who have won four of five games overall. "Those guys are athletic. It's hard to come back, we just kept attacking," Jefferson said of Blake Griffin and LA. "We trust our offense. We got some stops and were able to run." The Jazz overcame a 12-point deficit and survived Griffin's 20th double-double in a row. Griffin posted 30 points and 12 boards. Utah veteran forward Andrei Kirilenko is doubtful for Thursday's game because of a balky back.
Portland just went 1-2 on a three-game road trip and suffered a 95-77 loss in Denver on Tuesday. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 18 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked seven shots to lead the Blazers, who lost for the fifth time in nine tries overall and dropped to 6-13 on the road. Nicolas Batum scored 14 points and Rudy Fernandez added 11 off the bench in a losing cause. The Blazers will also host Houston on this upcoming residency and own a 10-3 ledger in the Rose Garden this season.
"Tonight we looked like we had heavy legs. We hung in there for a half, and that's not enough," Blazers head coach Nate McMillan said following the loss to the Carmelo Anthony-less Nuggets. On the injury front for the Trail Blazers, guard Brandon Roy is doubtful for Thursday with a sore left knee and center Marcus Camby (ankle) is listed as questionable versus the Jazz. Roy has missed six straight games and Camby has been out three of the past five contests.
The 2010-11 season series between Utah and Portland is tied at a game apiece, but the Jazz have won seven of the past 10 meetings between the clubs. The Blazers have dropped three in a row as the host in this series.
