Handicapper: Wunderdog Sports
Sport: NHL Hockey
Game: Ottawa Senators @ Philadelphia Flyers - Thursday December 10, 2009 7:05 pm
Pick: 5 units TOTAL: Under 5.5 (+100)

The Flyers erupted for six goals in their last outing against the Islanders, but one game does not fix the woes they have shown. They are still trying to find the net as they have failed to top the two-goal mark in their previous six games and averaged a pathetic 1.17 per contest in those six games. The Senators arent in much better shape on the offensive end where they have scored just 18 times in their last eight games, or just better than two per contest. That leaves a lot of wiggle room for this one to stay well UNDER the total posted. The potential of one of these teams going off on the offensive end is very marginal, and odds favor this one to stay UNDER the total - my play in this one.

BOSTON –½ -1.05 over Toronto Pinnacle

It’s almost not fair. The Leafs will play its third game since facing the Bruins last Saturday while the Bruins have been sitting at home, not having played since then. They buried the Leafs 7-2 under less favorable circumstances in that game and while another five-goal win is unlikely, an outright win is not. The Bruins are heating up with seven wins in its last nine games and they’ll catch the Leafs playing three games in four nights and the tail end of back-to-backs. Play: Boston -½ -1.05 (Risking 2.1 units to win 2).

NASHVILLE -½ +1.05 over Columbus Pinnacle

With just a single win in nine games prior to last night the Jackets were in urgency mode and while they did pick up the win, the were he second best team on the ice. They got some outstanding goaltending from Steve Mason and were fortunate to fend off the Panthers. That’s alarming and now they’ll travel to Tennessee to play a very difficult Preds squad. Mathieu Garon gets the call in net for the Blue Jackets and he’s hit and miss. The Jackets defense leaves plenty to be desired and when pressured they cough it up with ease and that plays right into the Predators strength. Nashville is a relentless fore-checking squad that executes the cycle as well as anyone. They’ve been playing solid and winning hockey for the past six weeks and they’re also getting rock solid goaltending. The Preds last two last wins have come against Vancouver and Chicago, they always come to play and this match-up is a good one for them. Play: Nashville -½ +1.05 (Risking 2 units).

SPORTS WAGERS

CLEVELAND +10 over Pittsburgh

The Brownies played a prime time game four weeks ago when they hosted the Ravens and lost 16-0. They couldn’t move five yards and they couldn’t cross the 50-yard line the whole game. The score doesn’t look that bad when in fact it was, as the Brownies never stood a chance and they may as well been losing 50-0 because that’s the way it seemed. The point is that it was an embarrassing and humiliating showing and now they get a little shot at redemption. The problem is that the Steelers have been somewhat humiliated themselves over the past few weeks and that was topped off last Sunday when they were beaten at home by the Raiders as a 14½-point choice. The Steelers playoff lives are on the line but laying 10 road points on a short week cannot be recommended. At least the Brownies have shown a little life the past three weeks with decent showings in Detroit Cincinnati and last week at home to the Chargers. That’s three straight covers for Cleveland while the Steelers have lost outright to both Oakland and Kansas City and they’ve dropped four in a row. No way can a team that is dropping faster than Tiger Woods’ endorsements be recommended as a big favorite on the road. Losing is one thing but losing to the Chiefs and Raiders is about as bad as it gets and you can double that on a short week. If they can lose to Oakland at home and Kansas City they can most certainly lose this one as well and the 10 points is massive insurance. Play: Cleveland +10 (Risking 2.12 units to win 2).

WASHINGTON +2.71 over Boston

The Celtics are perfect on the road with a 9-0 record and along with the Magic and Cav’s they’re the class of the East. However, they’re certainly not invincible and it’s worth mentioning again that their rebounding or lack thereof is going to cost them at some point. The Wizards have their shortcomings too but the threesome of Arenas, Butler and Jamison makes them a dangerous team that can go off at any time. Home teams get a little extra jacked up to play the best, especially storied franchises like the Lakers and Celtics and the Wizards have the talent to pull the upset. The Celtics have been going just a little too good these days and with no urgency in its game whatsoever, they’re just about ready to get upset and it’s going to happen any day now. It says here this is that day. Play: Washington +2.71 (Risking 2 units). <!-- / message -->

GINA'S NBA PREDICTIONS

Thursday, December 10th, 2009 10:30 p.m. est.
Orlando Magic (17-4) at Utah Jazz (12-9)
Utah Jazz are tough at home, they have won and covered the spread in their last five games in Salt Lake City, 9-3 at home this season. Then again, the Magic are on a roll and will try to win their seventh straight overall and ninth straight on the road. Go with the Magic. Orlando is 13-3-1 ATS in the last 17 meetings against Utah, 4-0-1 ATS in the last 5 in Utah.

5* W iseg uy C B B on E SP N G am e of the Night on D ep au l +12(-107 at 5dimes)

Mississippi State is overrated in the early going this season. Both the Bulldogs and Depaul enter this game with identical 5-2 records, with Mississippi State having lost to Rider and Richmond already this year, two teams they were heavily favored against. Depaul's losses have come against Tennessee by 4 as a 19.5-point underdog and to Vanderbilt by 13 as a 15.5-point underdog. Those teams are two of the best in the country. So now Depaul has been battle-tested, and they'll give Mississippi State all they can handle tonight with a great shot to pull off the upset. Depaul is 8-1 ATS (+6.9 Units) in r oa d g am es after scoring 65 points or less 2 straight games over the last 3 seasons. Take Depaul and the points.

6* W id ow W iseg uy St eel ers/Bro wn s AFC North G AME OF THE M ONTH on Cl evela nd +10.5(-110 at bookm)

The Cleveland Browns have been playing better than their 1-11 record. The Browns have a chance to spoil the Steelers' season tonight, and that would make their year to ruin the playoff hopes of a bitter division rival. Cleveland has covered 3 straight, and they are 6-3 ATS in their last 9 games overall. In their last 3 games, they lost by 1 to Detroit, by 9 at Cincinnati, and by 7 at home against San Diego. So in their last two games, they have played two of the best teams in the AFC and have given them all they could handle. The weather conditions tonight, which calls for snow and swirling wind of over 25 MPH, will level the playing field. In perfect conditions, Pittsburgh would have a big advantage with their passing game. But tonight, they won't be able to rely on Big Ben and their passing game. This is going to be a ground game, and with SS Troy Polamalu still out for Pittsburgh, they are missing their best run stuffer. Brady Quinn is giving his team a chance to win every week, not making critical mistakes. The Browns have only 1 turnover in their last 3 games offensively, so they are taking care of the football. That will be key tonight in an upset bid. The Steelers are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing record. The Steelers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games as a road favorite. The Browns are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 games after accumulating more than 250 yards passing in their previous game. The Browns are 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games as an underdog of 3.5-10.0. Pittsburgh is getting way too much respect from the odds makers here, as they are still treating the Steelers like they are Super Bowl-caliber team when they really aren't any more. They have too many key injuries, and they aren't getting the job done late in games this year. Take the Browns and the points.

MAXIMUS REPORT
LOCKS:
TAKE DEPAUL BLUE DEMONS +11 vs. Mississippi St. Bulldogs. This is a neutral court game being played in Tampa, FL and is scheduled to tipoff at 6:30pm EST.
EVALUATION: Mississippi St. is 5-2 SU and have an over inflated points per game avg. of 76.3 after blowing out St. Bonaventure this past Saturday 105-53. They usually score about 63-75 points though against sub par competition. The Bulldogs have not left the friendly confines of home yet, and this is going to be their first road game of the year. They were expected to finish as the top team in the Western division of the SEC conference, but after losses to Rider and Richmond at home, looks like those expectations might be a little reaching. Depaul comes in with a 5-2 SU mark also, and the state of Tennessee has not been nice to the Blue Demons, their two losses have come to the hands of two Top 25 teams in Tennessee & Vanderbilt & both games were played in Tennesee. Good thing this game is in Florida, so we like the way the Blue Demons #11 ranked defense to keep this as another low scoring ball game, and therefore Depaul should keep it close enough to cover this spread.
