Stu's Thursday Night Card (SF1)
Clemson (+2') at Wake Forest (43') - 7:45 p.m. EST
On a night that could be slick (there’s rain in the forecast all day and night in the Winston-Salem area) I’ll grab the points with the team that runs and defends the run best and that’s the Clemson Tigers. Both teams are coming off of disappointing home losses (Clemson to Maryland, Wake to Navy) mostly as a result of losing the turnover battle. But it will be the Tigers, who whipped the visiting Deacs 44-10 last year and won in Winston-Salem 24-17 two years ago), who will bounce back best in this outright ACC win. Last game, the Deacs allowed Navy to run for 292 yards on 51 carries while accumulating just 43 yards on 31 carries. That’s not a formula for winning folks. Wake came into this season with huge question marks along the offensive line and a third of the way into the season coach Jim Grobe hasn’t found any answers as the Deacs are averaging a woeful 85 yards per game rushing and a mere 2.4 yards per carry. Clemson is holding foes to 115 yards per game on the ground and they will have the upper hand in this area. And since Wake has struggled running, that has put more pressure on QB Riley Skinner to make plays. He’s done so in some cases, but other times not as in the four interceptions he tossed against the Midshipmen last game. Clemson defensive coordinator Vic Koenning has devised a winning game plan the past few years against Wake and tonight will be no different. After being punched in the mouth in the opener by Alabama, the Tiger stop unit has responded well the last four games in allowing just 46 total points.
On the other side of the ball, look for the Tigers to establish their ground game behind the one-two running punch of James Davis (75 ypg, better than six yards per carry) and C.J. Spiller (61 ypg). Once again, Wake gave up almost 300 yards rushing in its last game. Clemson can strike through the air, too, with QB Cullen Harper throwing for 189 ypg and he’s got two play-makers in receivers Aaron Kelly and Jacoby Ford. Last year, Harper was 27 of 35 for 266 yards and three TDs versus Wake Forest. Now the Deacs have a decent defense, but they will be facing a big challenge tonight. They also will be facing a field position challenge as the Deacs have a significant injury issue this evening after standout kicker/punter Sam Swank strained his quadriceps in Monday’s practice and will be a game-time decision. If Wake’s all-time leader in points and field goals can’t go, then former walk-on and redshirt frosh Shane Popham will make his collegiate debut. With their loss to Bama in the opener and then to Maryland last game, the Tigers squarely have their backs against the wall. More importantly, coach Tommy Bowden does. But this isn’t the first time the pressure has been turned up on Bowden during his time at Clemson and he has responded big time in the past. This season is not lost yet and an ACC title is still within reach of a very talented Tiger team. Clemson, which has been a bit conservative so far, will open things up offensively and put together its best total team effort of the season in this outright win.
CLEMSON (+2') 40 Dimes
L.A. Dodgers (Lowe) at Philadelphia Phillies (Hamels) - 8:15 p.m. EST
Pitching will be the order of the evening tonight as Game 1 of the NLCS will stay under the posted price. These two starters have been on their game of late and tonight will be more of the same. The Dodgers will go with playoff veteran Derek Lowe, who has a 3.39 ERA in 17 career playoff appearances. The right-hander has allowed two or less runs in 10 consecutive starts, going 6-1 with a 1.13 ERA in that stretch. He was solid at Chicago in his first playoff start this season and he enters tonight’s game at 4-1 with a 3.02 ERA in 11 career games against the Phillies. For Philly, it’s Cole Hamels on the bump as he’s off a performance in which he tossed eight scoreless innings against the Brewers eight days ago. He has allowed two or fewer runs in 10 of his last 11 starts, sports a 2.80 ERA at home this year and has a 2.84 ERA in two career home postseason starts. Only one of his last six starts has sailed over while the under has cashed in four of the last five meetings and nine of the last 11 clashes in Philly. The Phillies have also stayed low in six of their last seven versus righty starters. Runs will be at a premium tonight as this game stays under the posted price.
