Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox Aug 13 2009 1:35PM

PICK: Boston Red Sox

Your pick will be graded at: -106

TITLE: 7* MLB EARLY AFTERNOON HAMMER *52-36 RUN*

REASON FOR PICK: Let's get this straight. The Tigers are 23-36 on the road and have lost the first three games of this series, while the Red Sox check in at 38-17 at Fenway Park and are still highly motivated after that weekend sweep at the hands of the Yankees, yet the Tigers are the ones favored this afternoon?

It just doesn't add up.

Perhaps even more interesting is the fact that the public isn't jumping all over the Red Sox. Boston has already gone 6-0 against the Tigers this season and that's not a trend we see turning around on Thursday.

Yes, the Tigers have their ace going in Justin Verlander, but he has looked like anything but lately, allowing five earned runs in back-to-back starts. The Red Sox have tagged him for five earned runs in two of their previous three looks over the last three seasons. Also note that the Tigers are just 6-7 in his 13 road starts this season.

Red Sox starter Clay Bucholz hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire, but is coming off a fine outing against the Yankees, in which he allowed just six hits and two runs over six innings. This is a guy whose numbers have become skewed, as he's pitched only once at Fenway Park this season. You'll remember that he pitched a no-hitter here back in his second MLB start in 2007. He allowed one earned run or less in each of his first three starts at Fenway Park last season.

The Tigers are still holding on to the A.L. Central division lead, but only by two games. We don't believe that this is a team that performs well under pressure, and on this day, we look for the Red Sox to complete the 4-game sweep.

Take Boston (7*).

the sports investing professional has added the Ravens for 1 units, he usually plays most games at 500, so I would assume that is what he means

We Cover Spreads

1* Cowboys vs Raiders Under 34.5

Wade Phillips team didn't exactly light up the scoreboard last preseason averaging 17.2 PPG. The Raiders on the other hand only averaged 12.5 PPG last August. The Raiders will focus more on running ball trying to control the clock utilizing Justin Fargas, Darren McFadden, and Michael Bush. Last preseason the Raiders averaged 31.5 carries per game in August; make note the only game they decided to pass more than run they were shut out vs. Arizona. The under cashed in three of four of these games.
Tonight we can expect them to run quite a bit especially since back up Jeff Garcia will not participate. Tom Cable said back up QB's Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye will receive significant playing time in Thursday's opener. That's not a good sign for the Raiders air attack. On top of that they have the weakest receiver corps in the league and Javon Walker is out and Darrius Heyward-Bey missing all of spring due to a hamstring injury has taken it's toll since reports out of camp are he is becoming more known for his dropped passes. The media at camp has reported a poor week of practice for Bey.

Even with Cowboys starting CB's Terrence Newman and Michael Jenkins out; the back ups Orlando Scandrick who was Cowboys rookie of the year last year and rookie Deangelo Smith who had 10 Int's in his Jr. and Sr. seasons at Cincinnati won't be tested much by the Raiders pass attack.

Once Romo is done for the night the Cowboys have veteran Jon Kitna and rookie Stephen McGee filling in; and neither is capable of a lot of damage. The Cowboys will put Marion Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice to work.

Some interesting stats the Under has cashed in seven of the last eight Cowboys preseason openers. In the last five years they've only averaged 12.8 PPG in their August debuts. Dating back to the last seven preseason meetings between the two the total has averaged just 30.4 PPG right around where we think it will come in tonight and cash us an under ticket.
