LEGEND PLAY - Padres
Analysis: My 10* LEGEND Play is on the SD Padres at 4:10 ET.
The Dodgers swept the Padres in a three-games series back in May (14-16), the only time San Diego has lost three in a row this season. The team's overall consistency and its pitching pitching staff (No. 1 in overall ERA at 3.32 and No. 1 in bullpen ERA at 2.82) have been the cornerstones of the team's success. However, the Padres are in danger of suffering their second three-game sweep of the 2010 season today, at the hands of the D'backs. The good news for San Diego fans is that Mat Latos gets the nod, the man who has assumed the role of ace in 2010. He opened the year going 1-2 (team was 2-2) in his first four starts, posting a 6.20 ERA. However, he's been nearly unhittable since. He allowed four hits and two ERs over six innings of his last start (Tuesday), losing 2-1 at the Dodgers. That ende€d an eight-start stretch in which he was 6-0 and the team 8-0. Since his early struggles, Latos has allowed more than two ERs just ONCE (allowed three ERs in a 3-2 loss at Philly) in his last 16 starts. He's 10-3 (team is 12-4) in those games while posting a 1.74 ERA! Opposing Latos is Joe Saunders, who was traded to the D'backs right before the deadline from the Angels for Dan Haren. Saunders was brilliant in his final start for LA vs Texas (7 IP / 7 hits / 1 ER in a 1-0 loss) and in two starts for Arizona is 1-0 (team is 1-1) with a 1.69. That means he's got a 1.57 ERA in his last three outings (with a 15-3 KW ratio) but is just 1-1 (team is 1-2). Remember though, Saunders allowed four ERs or more in NINE of his first 19 starts this year (that's just about HALF!). The D'backs are an AWFUL 12-29 vs NL West opponents this season and Latos is the man San Diego wants on the mound to win a game like this and avoid the sweep. The Giants have lost two of three so far in Atlanta, so the Padres remain one game up on San Francisco in the division race but a win here would be HUGE. Latos is just the "right man for the job" and it's hard to ignore that the Padres are a PERFECT 7-0 this season when favored on the road by more than minus-$1.25!
Good luck...Larry
