World Cup Preview: Belgium - Russia
By Greg Stobart

Marc Wilmots' side was unconvincing in its opener against Algeria and will look to improve against Fabio Capello's men.
RIO DE JANEIRO — Belgium made hard work of its first match in World Cup Group H but Marc Wilmots’ much-hyped side managed to come from behind to beat Algeria.

As the favorite to win the group, Belgium can expect to again face a team prepared to sit deep and defend in numbers when it plays Russia on Sunday.

The main injury concern for Belgium is a groin problem for Vincent Kompany, but the captain is expected to lead his side out again at the Maracana, providing vital leadership and quality in the heart of the defense.

Romelu Lukaku was disappointing in the 58 minutes he played against Algeria but the Chelsea striker will continue to lead the line for Belgium, with his pace and power likely to cause problems for Russia’s slow defense.

The most likely change for Belgium is a starting place for Marouane Fellaini after the Manchester United midfielder came off the bench to score against Algeria, with Tottenham winger Nacer Chadli likely to make way. The other scorer against the North Africans – Dries Mertens – is also pushing for a start.

Wilmots has claimed that Eden Hazard is among the top five players in the world but to prove it the Chelsea winger will have to improve on his record of six international goals in 45 matches. He could make the difference and provide the extra quality to get past Russia.

Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev made the mistake of the tournament so far – and there have been a few – when he spilled the ball into his own net in the 1-1 draw with South Korea.

It was the nadir of a shaky display throughout the game for Akinfeev but Russia coach Fabio Capello has insisted he will not change his goalkeeper to face Belgium.

Russia is unbeaten in its last 11 matches under Fabio Capello but it lacked drive and quality on the ball against South Korea, with Roman Shirokov’s influence badly missed in midfield as he misses the tournament through injury.

As he looks to guide Russia to just its third ever victory at the World Cup finals, Capello may hand a start to 31-year-old striker Alexander Kerzhakov after his equalizer as a substitute in the first game.

Sunday's MLB betting cheat sheet

Tanaka Means Quality

New York Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka has an impressive streak going as he prepares to face the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. Tanaka has opened his career with 14 consecutive quality starts, racking up five double-digit strikeout efforts over that span.

Pitching Notes

* Detroit Tigers fireballer Max Scherzer will look to bounce back from his worst start of the season Sunday as he squares off against host Cleveland. Scherzer, who surrendered 10 runs over 4 1/3 innings last time out, is 8-4 with a 4.75 ERA in 16 career starts versus the Indians.

Hitting Notes

* Sunday will feature a marquee pitcher-batter matchup as Texas ace Yu Darvish faces Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels. Trout has gotten the better of Darvish to date, batting .290 with four home runs in 31 career at-bats.

Totals Streak

San Diego Padres (1-6-1 O/U): Sound familiar? The Padres continue to confound oddsmakers, racking up six consecutive games in which they either scored or allowed one or fewer runs. San Diego is far and away the strongest Under bet in the league to date at 24-47-4 O/U.

Injury Notes

* Atlanta Braves hurler Gavin Floyd suffered a fractured elbow Thursday night and is out indefinitely. Floyd was solid in nine starts in his first season with the Braves, going 2-2 with a 2.65 ERA in nine starts; the Braves were 5-4 SU and 3-6 O/U in those contests.

* Boston Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz (knee) is expected to rejoin the major-league rotation sometime next week. Buchholz is 2-4 with a 7.03 ERA in 10 starts with the Red Sox, who are 4-6 SU and 6-3-1 O/U in those outings.

* Seattle Mariners DH Corey Hart (hamstring) will start a minor-league rehab assignment this weekend. Hart has been out since mid-May, with the Mariners going 16-14 SU, 8-20-2 O/U and earning 290 units in his absence.

Weather Watch

* Busch Stadium is expected to see wind blowing out to center field at 6 mph for Sunday's game between host St. Louis and Philadelphia. The Cardinals went 7-2 SU while averaging 6.22 runs in nine games under similar conditions a season ago.

MLB Betting News and Notes - Week #12
•Visiting Mounds Have Been Kind To Keuchel: Dallas Keuchel has become the ace of the Houston Astros staff and he has been able to elevate the team on the road. Through Keuchel's seven road starts this season, the Astros are 6-1. The left-hander has only allowed an average of 1.5 runs per game on the road this season. Interestingly enough though, the under has only hit on two of those outings. The Astros and Keuchel will be in Tampa Bay Sunday.

•Dickey's Road Record Needs To Be Scene To Be Believed: The Toronto Blue Jays will be sending R.A. Dickey to the mound at the Great American Ball Park Sunday. The Jays should be weary as Dickey is led the club to a 1-5 record on the road this season. Though Dickey has been giving up a solid five hits per game on the road, he has been giving up almost four runs per game.

•Danks Horrendously Poor Against Twins: The Chicago White Sox could possibly be sending the worst pitcher to the mound when they play the Minnesota Twins Sunday. John Danks has steered the White Sox to s 3-13 record in his last 16 starts against the Twins, including seven straight loses. The left-hander has given up an average of just over seven hits per game and has only three times allowed less than six hits. Danks has also given up an average of four runs to the Twins and have only allowed less than three runs twice.

•Pirates OF Marte Out Until Monday: Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Startling Marte is dealing with a family matter in the Dominican Republic and will be out until Monday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Jose Tabata is starting in left field Saturday against the Chicago Cubs in place of Marte. Marte is batting .258 with five home runs, 26 RBIs, 34 runs scored and 17 steals this season. He batted .280 in 2013.

•Giants Calling Up 2B Panik: The San Francisco Giants called up second baseman Joe Panik from Triple-A Fresno on Saturday, according to the San Jose Mercury News. The club needs to make two roster moves to activate him. They have to add Panik to the 40-man roster and remove a player from the 25-man roster. Panik, 23, was the Giants' first-round draft pick in 2011. He is batting .321 with five home runs, 14 doubles and 50 runs in 74 games with Fresno. Second base has been a weak position, offensively, for the Giants this year. Brandon Hicks has eight home runs but is batting .172. Joaquin Arias is batting just .183 with only singles. Ehire Adrianza is batting only .208. Marco Scutaro, who was projected as the starter before spring training, has been out with a back injury all season and is not expected to be ready for full-time action this year.

•Sabathia, Taking Next Step, Heads South: The New York Yankees are sending CC Sabathia to Tampa, and Sabathia couldn't be happier. Sabathia is set to leave town Sunday, but only because he's ready for the next stage of work as he tries to come back from the right knee injury that has sidelined him since early May. He threw another bullpen session Saturday at Yankee Stadium, is scheduled to face hitters Tuesday, and hopes to throw in some sort of game next weekend. The Yankees still don't expect Sabathia back in the major leagues for quite a while -- general manager Brian Cashman has said August -- but the 33-year-old left-hander seems to be getting more encouraged by the day.

"I'm trying to go as fast as possible," Sabathia said. "Hopefully it's not five starts [in the minors]. I feel good. I'm optimistic." Sabathia is wearing a brace to stabilize the knee, and said the results so far have been good. But he also knows that there are bigger tests ahead. "I got after it a little [in Saturday's bullpen session]," he said. "This is the time to test it. I will in Tampa."

Toronto Blue Jays at Cincinnati Reds

When Cincinnati Reds and ace hurler Johnny Cueto take on Toronto Blue Jays with knuckleballer R.A. Dickey in the rubber match of this three game interleague series they'll do so with conditions on their side. Cueto with a 1.92 ERA, 0.83 WHIP in 15 starts will handcuff Jays who have suddenly lost their swing. Take away Friday's 14 run outburst Jays have crossed 3 or less in 9 of 13 averaging just 2.2 runs/game. Stick with Cincinnati knowing Reds are on a 5-1 stretch at home w/Cueto including three shutout affairs and that Jays have struggle on the road with Dickey posting a 1-5 mark over his six starts. This being a day game and rubber match sets the table for Cinci as Jays are 0-4 in road day games with Dickey, 3-7 overall in road rubber matches including 1-3 handing the ball to the knuckleballer.

Bonus Play

Oakland Athletics -115 over Boston

Nice winner on the Brewers here yesterday and today we take advantage of a cheap price on the A's, who are a vastly better team from top to bottom as compared to the Red Sox. The Sox defense of last year's World Series title has been a disaster, but they continue to be priced as if they were contenders. Starter Jon Lester has not been nearly effective on the road as he has been at home and the A's continue to pound left-handed starters, going 18-7 this year and a profitable 83-58 (+21.7 units) the last three seasons. Oakland also feasts on inferior teams as they are 20-9 this season against opponents with a losing record. After winning the first three games of this series the A's are now 15-6 against Boston in the last 21 of the series, including an 11-1 mark in this ballpark. Oakland sweeps the Sox!
