Sunday's Lineup
40 Dime – OHIO STATE
20 Dime – TEMPLE
OHIO STATE --- General consensus is that Minnesota is the hottest team in the Big 10 right now having just gone through Michigan State and Purdue to get to this game... but just think about how monumental it would be to go through those two (the 3- and the 2-seed) and then beat out the #1 seed to earn an automatic berth into the Big Dance. The thing is... I don't think the Gophers have to do anything else to make their case any stronger as I believe with those wins over MSU and Purdue, the tournament committee has placed them squarely IN the tourney.
Ohio State, on the other hand, has had two close wins over lesser Michigan and Illinois and needed double overtime yesterday just to make it to today. So you can see how the general consensus is to back Minnesota here as they appear to be the better, hotter team. But I say... Ohio State is more battle-tested after two close wins while Minnesota was really only challenged in the Michigan State game. Plus, let's not forget the Gophers will be playing their fourth consecutive game in as many days and fatigue might play a factor in the second half.
Ohio State and Minnesota split their season series, each winning at home, but Minnesota's win over the Buckeyes came when Evan Turner was just returning from his broken back and wasn't completely 100%. When Turner was back to full strength and the Gophers visited Columbus, the Buckeyes ran them out of the gym by 22 points... and the game really wasn't even that close. The favorite is 8-0 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two and I believe Ohio State is still playing for a #1 seed in the tournament if Duke loses. It's basically down to Duke, Ohio State and West Virginia, but the Buckeyes still believe they have a legitimate shot with a win today. I like Ohio State to cruise in this game, possibly winning by double digits.
TEMPLE --- This pick almost seems too easy the way Temple has been playing, but I can't avoid this one just because I think it's a trap. Richmond is a respectable team that is clearly capable of winning this game, but I don't think they realize just how good Temple's defense is playing right now. I'm telling you... the Owls are a dangerous team that no one wants to face in the field of 64 because they don't have a lot of weaknesses and really attack you on the defensive side of the ball. Just listen to the total points allowed over their last 6 games: 44, 51, 57, 51, 53, and 41. Defense is the key to winning any tournament game and this one is no different. Plus, let's not forget Richmond handed the Owls a horrible setback in Virginia earlier this year, 71-54, and I can assure you they are thinking about revenge this afternoon knowing a win will likely eliminate the Spiders from post-season contention. Revenge, defense, and just better overall talent is enough for me. I like the Owls minus the small impost.
SORRY GUYS....CUDN'T GET ON TO POST!
