Yesterday we rolled with Kentucky as our Top Play, as the Wildcats avenged their earlier loss to Tennessee. Today I'm making the unpopular choice to fade vastly talented Kentucky. The bottom line for me in this one is motivation. As I mentioned, Kentucky avenged their earlier loss to Tennessee in HUGE fashion, 74-45. The Wildcats have to be feeling fat & happy coming off that huge win, especially knowing they'll definitely be in "The Big Dance." And since they already defeated the Bulldogs this season, I can't see Kentucky being too motivated to gain any kind of margin here.
The Bulldogs, on the other hand, are one of those bubble teams. They need this game to ensure an invite to the NCAA Tournament. That doesn't mean they'll win this game, but it should mean that we will get maximum effort for the full 40 minutes. They'll also be playing with revenge from an 81-75 OT home loss to Kentucky back on 2/16. In that game, the Bulldogs shot just 38.6% from the field, had only half as many free throw attempts & free throws made, AND were -20 (yes, MINUS 20) in rebounds. And Kentucky still needed OT to get the win!
As I said earlier, this one is all about motivation. The revenge-minded Bulldogs need this win; Kentucky does not. The Bulldogs already proved they can hang with the Wildcats despite getting clearly outplayed, and they have the confidence of knowing that they won this SEC Tournament last season. Kentucky lost just two games all season. They avenged their loss to South Carolina with a 21-point win and followed that with a loss to Tennessee. Yesterday, Kentucky avenged their loss to Tennessee with a huge 29-point win. If the pattern holds true, we should see a bit of a flat performance from Kentucky coming off that huge revenge win. Grab the points with Mississippi State.
