4* #803 DALLAS over NEW YORK
With one of the most experienced rosters in the NBA, there are
expectations from Dallas in particular situations, and they are
meeting them ? they are playing the way that a veteran team should.
We see it in a 15-8 SU mark on the road, and also in the fact that
they are 12-2 SU off of a loss, including 5-0 SU on the road when
playing off of a loss. When we throw some key pendulums into play,
and also the fact that this home court value should be reduced, we
have a prime setting for all of those numbers to add another win this
afternoon.
As always, we prefer ?bounce back? notions for any team more if the
key individuals involved are prominent regarding the issue. That is
the case here ? in Friday?s ugly offensive showing at Philadelphia,
the second-lowest point count by the Mavericks this season, Dirk
Nowtizki and Jason Terry combined to shoot and awful 6-25; Jason Kidd
was 2-7 with four turnovers; and Shawn Marion missed much of the game
with a finger injury. That puts them all in the right frame of mind
for today, and against a soft New York defense there should not be
any difficulty putting that focus into play. And the fact that that
defense has remained solid on this road trip (#7 in the NBA on our
best charts) helps to control the flow. From Terry, after Friday?s
offensive embarrassment - <i>"When you're getting stops and still not
scoring for long stretches, it deflates your team ? But we got to win
Sunday at all costs to salvage this trip."</i> And note that while
this does mark the end of a five-game road trip fatigue should not be
an easy, with Dallas having had Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday off.
The Knicks have had some pockets of good play, but for the second
season in a row Chris Duhon is wearing down badly because of too many
minutes on the floor, and his issue comes front and center today. He
has shot an atrocious 4-33 over the last six games, but there is not
much help to be found ? Nate Robinson has been downgraded to doubtful
because of a hamstring injury, and while Robinson was in Mike
D?Antoni?s dog house for part of this season, he had been averaging
14.6 points, 3.4 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game in January.
Neither Larry Hughes nor Toney Douglas are natural point guards to
run the offense, so after averaging only 23 minutes per game in the
last three outings Duhon?s minutes go up again here, and his lack of
confidence becomes a major factor in the game flow.
Also note that there should be nothing special about the crowd in
Madison Square Garden this afternoon ? with the Jets kicking off at
Indianapolis in the AFC Championship game while this one is still
going on the atmosphere will be much different than usual. That makes
it even easier for Dallas to grind out a win by much more than the
short pointspread that has been set.
(NOTE: With Jason Kidd having to leave the Mavs this morning this
play is now a Scratch).
easiest winner he has had in two years and he cancels the game because of Jason ( way past the prime ) Kidd.
