Canadian Bacon: CFL Week 13 Analysis and predictions

Saturday

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-1.5, 53.5)

One week after beating the Calgary Stampeders 43-37, the Roughriders are in Hamilton to face the Tiger-Cats, who they beat 37-24 last time they met in Regina on July 31. But, in that game, Arland Bruce III proved to be dominant for the Tiger-Cats by catching 16 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns. This time around, the Riders secondary promises to make life more difficult for Bruce who leads the CFL with 985 receiving yards.

After a slow start, the Tiger-Cats won five of their last six games and now share second place in the East with the Toronto Argonauts. Bruce was shut down by the B.C. Lions last week but running back DeAndra’ Cobb took over with 151 rushing yards. The Tiger Cats will also feature new comer DE Stevie Baggs, who will make his Hamilton debut against his former team. The Roughriders are unbeaten at home but they have won only one of their five road games in 2010.

Pick: Hamilton

B.C. Lions at Calgary Stampeders (-10.5, 55)

The best team in the CFL has not lost to the Lions since November 3 2007, which means an eight-game winning streak against their rivals from British Colombia. This season, the Stampeders won its two games against the Lions, 27-22 in Week 6 and 48-39 in Week 9. The stats compiled by the Stampeders are incredible with an average of 36 points scored per game and a defence that leads in 16 of 25 categories such as points allowed (22.3 per game), TDs allowed (20), QB sacks (31) and turnovers (37).

The Lions can pull off an upset and their 3-8 record is misleading. The Alouettes learned that a few weeks ago. Quarterback Casey Printers can rely on two receivers, Geroy Simon and Emmanuel Arcenaux, who are on their way to 1,000-yard pass seasons. This said, the Stampeders are never easy prey at McMahon Stadium, where they are still unbeaten in five games this season. It would be quite a surprise to see them lose a second game in a row. Don’t forget that the Stampeders can guarantee a playoff spot and home-field advantage with a win against B.C.

Pick: Calgary

Bettors’ best friend: Saturday’s wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

There has been no line movement of note among Saturday’s MLB games.

Saturday’s NCAAF line moves.

Weather to watch

Red Sox at Yankees: A 16 mph wind is expected to blow out to left field.

Mets at Phillies: A 15 mph is expected to blow out to left-center field.

Cardinals at Cubs: A 10 mph is expected to blow out to right field. There is only a 10 percent chance of rain.

Astros at Pirates: A 12 mph wind is expected to blow out to left field.

Royals at Indians: A 13 mph wind is expected to blow out to right field.

Twins at Tigers: A 13 mph wind is expected to blow out to left field.

A complete summary of Saturday’s NCAAF weather

Who’s hot

The Phillies are 10-0 in their last 10 overall and 44-15 in their last 59.

The Twins are 5-0 in their last five road games.

The Athletics are 4-0 in Gio Gonzalez’s last four starts.

N.C. State is 4-0 ATS in its last four overall, but Georgia Tech is 7-1 ATS in its last eight ACC games.

Michigan is 5-0 ATS in its last five non-conference games.

Oregon State is 10-1 ATS in its last 11 road games.

Who’s not

The Mets are 0-5 in their last five overall.

The Dodgers are 3-13 in their last 16 games against right-handed starters.

The White Sox are 1-8 in their last nine overall.

Boston College is 0-6 ATS in its last six overall.

Georgia is 1-4 ATS in its last five SEC contests.

Cincinnati is 0-6 ATS in its last six non-conference games.

Key stat

1081 – Passing yards for Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett through just three games this season. He may need similar production against an Alabama team that returned Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram last week and scored 45 points against Duke…in the first half.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Ryan Williams is among five Virginia Tech Hokies sidelined for Saturday’s game at Boston College. The Hokies are expected to start Darren Evans in place of Williams at running back as they look for their first victory in Chestnut Hill. Williams had 40 carries through two games and scored three touchdowns in that span, two rushing and one receiving.

Biggest game on the slate

Alabama Crimson Tide at Arkansas Razorbacks (7, 56.5)

Notable quotable

“This is about Michael Vick and his accelerated play. He's sitting there as possibly the hottest quarterback in the National Football League at this time and deserves an opportunity to play.” – Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid on his decision to start Vick over Kevin Kolb for this week’s game against Jacksonville.

Tips and notes

On the surface, it looks like Notre Dame is in deep trouble. The Fighting Irish are coming off brutal losses to Michigan and Michigan State and they have lost their last 10 games against teams in the Top 20 (Stanford, this week’s opponent, is a Top 20 team). They are also going up against an undefeated Cardinal squad that is outscoring opponents 155-41. Still, don’t count Notre Dame out. “We our obviously not happy at 1-2, but at the same time, it has almost kind of energized the team this week,” safety Harrison Smith told the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette. “Everybody is going hard. The coaches are getting after it. It is not we are down and everybody is feeling sorry for themselves.”

Something has to give when Mallett and the Arkansas offense goes up against what has been a dominant Alabama defense. Just how good has the Crimson tide ‘D’ been this season? Alabama boasts the nation’s No. 2 scoring defense (6.3 ppg), the No. 11 passing defense (132.7 ypg) and the No. 9 total defense (253.3 ypg). Of course, you could make the argument that the opponents have been San Jose State, Duke, Penn State, the latter of which started a freshman at quarterback.

South Carolina versus Auburn is an interesting clash, and not just because it pits a pair of undefeated SEC rivals against each other. Before you jump all over the Gamecock bandwagon, keep in mind that they have not started 4-0 since the 2001 season and they have lost their last five SEC road games. Matchup-wise, Auburn’s No. 1 SEC rushing offense is taking on South Carolina’s No. 1 rushing defense.

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Derek Lowe (14-12, 4.18 ERA), Atlanta Braves

This veteran sinkerball pitcher is making a late push to join the Braves playoff rotation, should they hold on in the NL Wild Card. The Braves are 4-0 in Lowe’s last four appearances and the righty owns a 1.35 ERA and a 16-1 strikeout to walk ratio over his last three starts.

Slumping

Chris Carpenter (15-8, 3.28 ERA), St. Louis Cardinals

Carpenter is one of many Cardinal players who thought the season ended a month earlier, or at least that what it seems like. The former Cy Young winner is 1-3 with a 6.20 ERA in September.

John Danks (13-11, 3.80 ERA), Chicago White Sox

Here’s another righty who’s lost his groove. Danks was one of the American League’s most consistent starters from start of June to the middle of August. Thanks to some subpar performances, the White Sox have lost eight of Danks’ last 10 starts.

Matt Garza (14-9, 4.01 ERA), Tampa Bay Rays

Is Garza out of juice? The hard-throwing California native hasn’t pitched a full six innings in any of his last four starts. He owns a big ol’ fat 10.93 ERA over his last three outings. Not surprisingly, the Rays are 0-3 in those three games.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies (-160, 9)

For most of the season, the question was whether or not the Phillies would win the National League East. Now the question is if the Phillies will ever lose another game.

Philadelphia, which trailed the Atlanta Braves from late May until early September, built a six-game lead by Friday and had won 10 in a row. The Mets, this weekend’s opponents, even sound intimated.

“I'm not surprised at all,” Mets’ shortstop Jose Reyes told the New York Post. “They are unbelievable. They came back and caught us two years in a row in September in 2007 and ‘08. This is always their time of year.”

But the Phillies still have plenty to play for. They have not mathematically clinched and they also want the best record in baseball (currently tied for second with Tampa Bay at 92-61, a half game behind Minnesota). Manager Charlie Manuel said he wants to clinch as soon as possible so that he can rest his starters and align his pitching rotation for the playoffs.

Philadelphia does not have one of its “Big 3” going on Saturday, but it does have Kyle Kendrick, who is coming off two straight quality starts.

Pick: Phillies

Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Indians (127, 7.5)

Not many teams have been worse than Kansas City this season; four, to be exact. The good news for the Royals is that one of those four teams is Cleveland.

The Indians’ bats have been especially woeful. They have been shut out 15 times this season, and after managing just one run in a loss to the Twins on Wednesday, it looked like shutout No. 16 was on tap for Thursday. But Cleveland scored twice in the seventh before losing to Kansas City 4-2.

It won’t help the problem that Zack Greinke is going for the Royals on Saturday. Greinke has been modest by his standards this season (9-13, 4.00 ERA), but he boasts a stellar 3.63 ERA in his last eight starts.

Pick: Royals

ROB VINCILETTI: RARE 5* NCAA GAME OF THE MONTH -100% SYSTEM
On Saturday the 5* Power system play is on Penn.St. Game 318 at 3:30 eastern. What we want to do in this game is play on certain home teams if they are favored from -3 ro -17 are off a double digit win and are now taking on an opponent off a dog win at +5 or higher. These homers are 47-6 ats, and there is a 100% subset to the system. On top of that emple qualifies in a game 4 system that pertains to undefeated road dogs in this range. Temple has in deed turned the corner last year and so far this year. However they are off a tough home win vs U.Conn last week and to come back here against a talented Nittany Lions defense may be too much to ask. Look for Penn. St to go to 9-3 ats vs the MAC and get the win and cover here
