959 OAK (+120) Hilton vs 960 DETAnalysis:

A’s @ Tigers

By Tony George

The league leading Oakland A’s fresh off a weekend road sweep at the Marlins, face a stiff test in a 3 game series at AL Central division leading Detroit, kicking off tonight in what should be a knockdown, drag out series between two premier teams in MLB. Oakland is red hot winning 11 out of their last 14 starts and bring up Scott Kazmir to the hill tonight in what looks to be a solid pitcher’s duel against Anibal Sanchez, with both pitchers under a 2.70 ERA for the season and both in good form.

Oakland’s offense ranks first in MLB at 5.16 runs per game, and their pitching staff’s ERA is ranked 2nd in ERA and 1st in WHIP. Kazmir is the stud ace of the bunch and with run support against a very suspect Tiger bullpen, I see an advantage here for Oakland on a tight moneyline tonight. Detroit surprisingly is only a .500 ball club at home with a 19-19 home record, and we all know Oakland is lights out on the road. The A’s, while road weary, understand the significance of this series, and I feel are the vastly better team with their best pitcher on the hill tonight. How often do you get Scott Kazmir on the hill, with a team who is on an 11-3 run, as an underdog? Too good to pass up for me.

2 Units San Diego Padres +110

Visiting Cincinnati in my mind is “overvalued” after sweeping a four-game set at San Francisco for the first time since way back in the 1972 season. When taking a look at tonight’s starting pitchers one would think the visiting Reds have a big advantage since Mat Latos began his career in a Padres uniform. But Latos is still rounding into form after making his season debut in mid-June following a battle with both elbow problems and a sore forearm detected during rehabilitation. For the moment Latos has REDUCED velocity on his pitching arsenal which is not the case for San Diego’s Jesse Hahn (2.38 ERA) who very quietly has helped an injury ravaged rotation. In his initial four starts Hahn has recorded the most STRIKEOUTS (27) in Padres franchise history. In comparison the initial four starts made by Latos in a San Diego uniform produced a figure (16) well below that of Hahn
