Chile +110

The one thing that the entire world knows is that South America dominates the sport of soccer. Chile is almost as good as Brazil and could do some major damage in the later rounds. Look for Chile to win the battle of possession and get the big win to take control of their group.

Honduras +2

It doesn't matter what the matchup is in this tournament; two goals is a lot to lay with how hard scoring has been. Spain has yet to score a goal in the World Cup so let's take our chances today with Honduras getting the cover getting two points.

Washington Nationals -150

The Royals are not a good team on the road while the Nationals do play good home ball and should get a big win with Hernandez on the mound, who has been pitching very well this year. Look for Washington to get a big win.

Chile +1.39 over Switzerland

Switzerland pulled off the first massive upset victory of the 2010 World Cup when they defeated Spain 1-0. Spain outshot Switzerland 28-6 and controlled possession by massive margin of 63% - 37%. Gelson Fernandes' Swiss goal was more a result of sloppy Spanish defending than anything else. Chile on the other hand played a dominant 1-0 game against Honduras, moving the ball at will and landing 8 shots on target. Sure Honduras isn't the powerhouse that is Spain, but Chile seems to focus more on scoring opportunities rather than creating the perfect play. Chile has a young team brimming with talent that is constantly on the attack. Alexis Sanchez is an electrifying young player who seems to be on the verge of global fame at this World Cup. Chile is also expected to have their top striker, Humberto Suazo, back in the line-up to give them a more clinical attack. Many worry that the Chilean attack leaves them open to counter strikes, but I doubt the Swiss can take advantage of this with their defensive style of play. Both teams know that a victory would surely put them through to the 2nd round. People are placing too much of an emphasis on the Swiss victory against a half-cocked Spanish side. Chile is the more capable team and offer up all kinds of value on the right side of even money. Play: Chile +1.39 (Risking 2 units).

HONDURAS +2 -102 over Spain

Spain lost their opening match 1-0 to Switzerland as a result of its team operating as individuals. Every soccer/football fan can you tell that you can't win a World Cup without the presence fluidity on both sides of the ball. The Spaniards failed to convert on any of their 8 shots on target and had two horrible defensive blunders that lead to Swiss opportunities. Spain was actually very lucky that the Swiss only converted on one of the mistakes they made in their own end, narrowly striking the post on the other one. This is not to suggest see a similar effort today from Spain, but laying two goals after their opening effort is on the border of insanity. Honduras was able to hold a relentless Chilean attack to 1 goal and that game should give them a decent depiction of what they will see in this match. They only managed 5 shots of their own in that match and will probably try to hold off the Spanish side rather than attack them. They should take a page out of the Swiss playbook, playing defense first and counter-attacking only when the opportunity presents itself. The one thing that this World Cup has taught us is that it's very dangerous to lay goals, even on the most powerful soccer nations. Honduras will likely lose this match, but if they play for a draw it will be very difficult for Spain to break through for more than 2 goals. It only makes sense to take the goals with Honduras, as it gives us three chances to win and one to push out of the five possible outcomes with the two-goal spread on this match. Play: Honduras +2 –1.02 (Risking 2.04 units to win 2).

Matt Rivers, Senior Handicapper at OffshoreInsiders.com has an MLB betting pick Monday on the Kansas City Royals playing at Washington Nationals. They are getting 130 at the sportsbooks.

Bruce Chen is far from a guy that I can trust but he actually has been alright of late and it does appear that Livan Hernandez is coming back down to Earth after the shockingly great start to the season. The old Cuban seemed to be defying everything including being probably about 45 years and looking great. But that can only last so long and Hernandez is starting to really be having some issues, especially on the road.

Washington is at home here which is an advantage for El Duque's half brother and the Royals are not good at all but the Nationals were just swept at home by the mediocre White Sox and seem to be resorting back a bit to their poor 2009 form. Granted the Nats are a decent enough club to back led by bashers in Zimmerman and Dunn when getting a pretty penny back but right now to lay a price, even against the lowly Royals and a bad hurler in Chen, is a semi must fade.

There is no way that I can go gaga on the visitors from Kansas City for obvious reasons with the main one being they are not good but on this small Monday slate I'll take the price back with the American Leaguers in a comp type play.

The pick: Kansas City +130

Game : Cincinnati Reds at Oakland Athletics (MLB) 10:05pm EST

Prediction : Oakland Athletics ML / Gio Gonzalez must start.

Analysis : The Reds are in a hitting funk scoring just 13 runs in their last seven games. Cincinnati put 7 on the board in one of those encounters, so now you can see how deep this club has fallen off the hitting wagon. Yesterday, they were shutout again 1-0 by Seattle in a get away affair up in the Northwest. Overall the visitor is on a very negative 1-6 run and now face the A’s in Oakland where they are 1-8. RHP Mike Leake of the Reds is a quality starter throwing a solid 5-1 mark (3.02)this season. However, the youngster has regressed lately being wacked for 10 hits and 10 runs the last two outings versus the Giants and Dodgers. It appears Cincinnati is continuing their poor history versus west coast .

Monday, June 21, 2010 10:05 p.m. est.
Cincinnati Reds (37-33) at Oakland Athletics (34-37)
(R) Mike Leake (5-1) vs. (L) Gio Gonzalez (6-5)

Oakland is coming off a horrible road trip, dropping five of their last six games. But now back at home and facing a struggling Reds team could help them to get back to winning ways. Oakland has won eight of the last 9 meetings against the tumbling Reds and went 5-1 in its last 6 against them at home. Go with the A’s at home to outscore Cincinnati’s comatose bats. The Reds have lost their last three games, six of their last seven and are just 2-5 in its last 7 on the road.

Cincinnati’s right-hander Mike Leake (5-1, 3.02 ERA) is 1-1 with a 5.19 ERA in his last three starts and 2-0 with a 1.67 ERA in his last four on the road. Leake will make his first appearance against the Athletics.

Oakland’s lefthander Gio Gonzalez (6-5, 4.21) is 1-2 with a 6.23 ERA in his last three starts and 4-2 with a 2.90 ERA in his six starts at home. Gonzalez will make his first appearance against the Reds.

jeff benton monday

1-1 yesterday MINUS 10 dimes OR $110 in the hole...overall, 63-67-3 MINUS 30 dimes...he continues TO NOT put a consistent winning streak together..atleast longer then a week.

Monday's Winner ... 15 DIME selection on the OAKLAND A’S over the Cincinnati Reds in interleague action. As I publish Monday’s plays, the A’s are a solid -125 favorite both here in Vegas and offsaore. As you’ll notice in my analyesis, Oakland lefty Gio Gonzalez is a big reason for this releose, so make sure you list Gonzalez as the A’s starting pitcher. If Gonzalez does not start, this play is VOID!

A’s

Both these teams are in a funk right now, with Cincinnati losing three in a row, six of seven and seven of nine and Oakland dropping four of five and seven of nine. The one caveat, though, is Oakland’s 2-7 slump came entirely on the road (where they’re just 13-24 on the season). At home, the A’s have been a completely diffarent team, going 21-13 while getting it done both on the mound (2.90 ERA) and at the plate (.271 team average).

Conversely, the Reds’ 2-7 rut started when they lost two of three each to the Royals and Dodgers at home, followed by a disastrous weekend in Seattle, where Cincinnati got swept by the pathetic Mariners – not only swept, but outscored 7-1 (the Reds lost a pair of 1-0 contests). Cincinnati is now a sub-.500 team on the highway this season at 14-16, including 2-5 in the last seven. And their team stats on the road mirror their mediocere record (.253 average; 4.32 ERA).

Even though the main numbers don’t show it, the pitching matchup favors the A’s, too. Cincinnati’s Mike Leake is 5-1 with a 3.02 ERA in 13 starts, but in his last two outings he’s allowed 10 runs, 20 hits and seven walks in 10 1/3 innings (he started out 5-0 with a 2.22 ERA). Oakland’s Gio Gonzalez is just 6-5 with a 4.21 ERA overall, but at home he’s 4-2 with a 2.90 ERA in six starts. The fact Gonzalez is a southpaw is key, too, because the Reds have lost five of their last six games to lefty starters, 13 of 16 on the road against lefties, and 22 of 30 against lefties when playing in A.L. ballparks.

Furthermore, the Reds are just 17-35 in their last 52 interleague roadies and 7-21 in their last 28 against A.L. West competioion. Compare that to Oakland, which is 69-33 in its last 102 interleague home games, 84-37 in its last 121 interleague games as a favorite and 7-0 when Gonzalez takes the mound as a chalk.

Finally, although these teams don’t meet every season, it’s interesting to note that the A’s have won eight of nine against Cincinnati overall, including five of the last six in Oakland. Combined score in those nine head-to-head meetings: Oakland 73, Cincinnati 32!
