Tony Smith's Picks of the Day

The winning continues with my best in baseball tonight, the Mets were an easy win in the Sunday night game. Tonight from Safeco Field the Mariners hosting the Angels. The Mariners were expected to be contenders based on their off season activity and core going in to it. To say the least the Mariners have been a disappointment. Jarrod Washburn will start for Seattle, 2 - 6 with a 6.54 ERA hitters are batting .318 when he pitches. The Mariners are 2 - 8 when Washburn starts. The Angels have been getting great pitching and fielding but are struggling at the plate. Ervin Santana starts for the Halos tonight coming off a complete game victory over the Tigers on Tuesday where he pitched another gem and had to wait till late in the game for a run scoring single to get a win. On April 19 vs. Seattle Santana pitched eight innings in the win. Santana is 7 - 2 with a 3.09 ERA and things will look even better on his line tomorrow. BEST: Angels

2,500 MLB Winners: PHILLIES, BREWERS & ORIOLES

The Reds play like gangbusters at home, but they have struggled mightily on the highway and they will again tonight in this series’ opener in Philly. Cincy, which just swept three from the visiting Braves, is back on the road where it is only 9-19 this year. Bronson Arrroyo has a bloated 5.12 ERA in six road starts and he’ll be followed by a Cincy pen that has a 5.32 ERA away from home. The Phils, who have scored a whopping 70 runs in their last seven games and average 5.7 runs per game at home, should score more than enough to support starter Kyle Kendrick. He has a nice 3.25 ERA in five home starts after holding the Rockies to only two runs in seven innings last time out. Philly is rolling having won six of its last seven and the Phillies will get it done tonight.

Milwaukee is 5-1 on its current homestand and will improve on that mark tonight against a Diamondbacks’ club that has lost 10 of its last 14 at Miller Park. The Snakes have cooled off since their hot start and just snapped a five-game skid with home wins on Saturday and Sunday over the Nationals. Arizona is only 11-13 on the road this year and starter Doug Davis got drilled last time out in giving up six runs in five frames versus San Fran. The former Brewer posted a 9.00 ERA in two starts against Milwaukee last season. Meanwhile, the Brewers’ Jeff Suppan is 2-0 with 0.93 ERA in four home starts this year. The team has won seven of his last eight starts and he’ll pitch well in handing Arizona its 11th loss in its last 13 away from home.

The O’s lost the first three games of this series but will bounce back tonight against a Boston lineup that won’t feature David Ortiz (wrist) and possibly Jason Varitek (rest). Despite the bad weekend, the O’s are still 16-11 at Camden Yards this year where Boston starter Tim Wakefield is 0-2 with a 7.47 ERA in his last four starts there. He’s also a nasty 0-3 with a 7.71 in his last four starts overall. Baltimore starter Jeremy Guthrie has a 2.18 ERA in his last three starts and the O’s pen is solid with a 3.26 ERA. He handcuffed the Red Sox offense in mid-May in allowing just two runs over eight innings. He’ll be sharp again and the O’s will salvage something of what has been a forgettable series to this point.

Howie Feiner's Picks of the Day

500* MLB Manager's Monday
New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins
New York Mets at San Francisco Giants

Livan Hernandez goes to the mound in Minnesota tonight hoping to remain perfect in the Metrodome. He is the Twin's Ace, and he can certainly pitch a solid game tonight. As if his 6 - 2 record and 4.6 ERA weren't enough, this team's bullpen proved itself last night. It was tired out from extra innings on Saturday only to come back and keep the Yanks scoreless for over 4 innings last night. Pitching won't be a problem at home for the Twins.

The Yanks are a different story however. There's no denying that Pettite is good. Hell the guy is great on the mound. Just, not as of late. He falls into one of my trends for pitchers that means no good for the team in general this season. The month of May was pretty rough on Pettite, he's 5 - 5 with a 4.11 ERA, but for a guy whose supposed to be an Ace, that's not good enough.

The home dog looks too good to pass up. With injuries on both sides and neither team playing as expected, the Twins have a great chance to salvage a split series tonight.

TWINS (+125)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last night the Mets finished up a 7 game home outing 5 - 2. Not bad for a team who came off the road 3 - 6 and had their manager questioned. Let's face it, New Yorker's are tough on their teams and staff, and while they have the right to be, it looks like it was pretty unfounded with last monday's manager meeting.

Church and Beltran had huge homers last night, and they are part of what makes this Mets team so hot. The problem with the Mets is, they're either all on, or all off, there's no mixed reception here. After Santana's 100th win last night the team has got to be full of positive things. Tonight they're sending Oliver Perez to the mound to open up a seven game west coast trip. He's 0 - 4 against the Giants lifetime, with an ERA of 5.83 after just over 40 innings of pitching against them.

What helps out the Giants is their pitcher on the mound tonight. Sanchez is stepping up after earning a W on wednesday against Arizona 11 - 3. His last three starts his managed to pull out at least 6 innings and given up only 2 runs in that time. When he's on the mound the Giants love to give run support. And against Perez, who has struggled against the Giants, they may just dominate this game.

GIANTS (+110)

Sal Conti's Picks of the Day

Another MAX 10 unit baseball winner with the Mets last night, tonights play is your MAX 10 value. The Braves will be happy to be playing at Turner Field where they have the best home win record in baseball 22 - 7. The Braves are 7 - 21 on the road, they are returning home from a 1 - 5 trip which ended in three straight losses to the REDS. Before the trip these same Braves had won eight of eleven. It looks as though the Marlins are coming back to earth as they face JJ Reyes and the Braves. Reyes is 2 - 3 4.83 on the year however his last start was a beauty, seven innings, only two hits while striking out nine. His opponent Scott Olsen has hit the skids, Olsen is 4 - 2 on the season however he has lost velocity on his fastball making the rest of his repetoire mediocre. Olsen has not been able to go six innings in his last four starts. In his last two he has pitched 8 1/3 total and allowed 4 home runs in the eight and one third. The Braves will be seething as they look to take back the momentum the road took from them. Scott Olsen may not see the fourth inning tonight. The Braves get what they need from the Marlins starter to win tonight. MAX10 UNITS: BRAVES

Les Barry's Picks of the Day

The MLB Plays:
500* Chicago Cubs at San Diego Padres

Chicago can not lose this one. Look how good Carlos Zambrano has been this season. He is 7 - 1 with a 2.33 ERA. He is ridiculously dominant in every game he has pitched this season. His last game against the Dodgers he went 8 innings and only gave up one earned run. I'm going to go ahead and pick him for the Cy Young this season. Zambrano won his last game against San Diego this season. Check out his lines against San Diego last season and the season before. He pitched a complete game giving up 1 earned run last season and pitched a 7 inning shut out the year before.
Enough of Zambrano and his ridiculously amazing pitching skills, Cha Seung Baek pitched an awful game in his only start this season. He gave up 4 earned runs in 4 2/3 innings pitched. That made his ERA in to a dreadful 8.31. Now, we both know he isn't going to have that bad of a game again, but don't expect him to throw a gem over here. A line of 5 innings pitched and 3 or 4 earned sounds about right.

Chicago (-)

500* Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles

The line moved a ridiculous amount in this game and I have no idea why. Boston should be the clear favorite to win this one. Tim Wakefield is the veteran in this match up. He hasn't had a great start to this year but he pitched an amazing game in his last start against Seattle. In that game he went 8 innings and gave up just one earned run in 5 hits.
Look, he's going to blank the Orioles here, they don't have a chance.
Jeremy Guthrie has pitched good this season but he has nothing to show for it. He record is 2 - 6 but he has a solid ERA of 3.64. What's that mean? No run support. So Ortiz isn't in the lineup, who cares. The Red Sox are still the better hitting team by far and they will get a few runs off of Guthrie. Capitalize on other bettors mistakes, take the Red Sox to win this game.

500* Boston (+)

Michael Jame's Picks of the Day

Angels at Mariners

Believe or not folks the Mariners have been playing better baseball lately. They are a team that is still searching for their identity and have to pick it up right now. There is no team they need to beat more than the Angels. This is a team they chase every year. This is a team that is the class of the AL West and this is a team they are very familiar with.

We used the Mariners as the biggest MLB play of the year on Saturday. Felix Hernandez was able to shut down the big bad Tigers. More importantly Seattle scored runs off a legit ace. Mariners took care of business versus Justin Verlander and company.

Tonight the Angels sound out Ervin Santana. He sure has been a story this year. He has been great, but let’s dig deeper. Ervin is a creature of habit. He is a pitcher that struggles on the road. Sure he has been better but look at this.

Ervin’s last home start he threw a complete game three hitter and struck out seven. His last road start he threw just six innings, walked two batters, allowed nine hits (One home run) and threw 110 pitches in a loss. That just shows what Ervin is all about. With the Angels heading into Safeco I look for the Mariners behind their lefty to take the W today.

MARINERS +115

Red Sox at Orioles

All of a sudden a few road wins and everyone loves the Red Sox. I am not buying it. This is a team that still has a tough time on the road. Now they will look ahead to heading back home and this is a classic let down game.

The Orioles are a scrappy group and do not want the Red Sox to come in and push them around anymore. They saw three very good starters the last three days. Tonight they face a much easier to hit Tim Wakefield. Anyone that follows baseball closely knows that Tim is up and down year to year. Last year Tim was impressive, this year he is having a ton of trouble.

Wakefield has not won a game in his last three starts and has close to a 6.00 ERA. Tonight the Red Sox will need top quality to pitching with David Ortiz out of the line-up. That will not happen. Taking the Orioles and the crafty Guthrie will prove the smart move as the Orioles bounce back as Boston gets ready for their flight home.

ORIOLES +105

Cubs at Padres

There is no doubt about how well the Cubs have been playing. They sure had an impressive week. How about winning every game this week? You say Michael how are we going against them tonight? Very simple folks, they played against two teams that are struggling like no other. Also they were able to take advantage of all of this in their own building.

Before their seven game home-stand this is a team that dropped two straight to the Pirates in Pittsburgh. All of a sudden an impressive home streak does not make you un-beatable on the West Coast. After playing last night they have to fly out to San Diego with no off day and play a Padres team that makes the short flight back.

The Padres have been playing much better baseball folks. Sure this team isn’t the top NL WEST team, but they have won five out of their last seven games. Both their bats and pitching have done the job as well, which shows the whole team coming around.

The Padres will be able to work the count and take care of a tired team that will have a let down.

PADRES +175

Brian King's Picks of the Day

CINCINNATI REDS AT PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES - 7:05 PM, ET

The Reds are 2-7 in the first game of a road series. Tonight they travel after sweeping a poor road team in Atlanta at home. They will be playing their 25th game in 24 straight days. This is a tired team that hits the road to visit the hot hitting, surging Philadelphia Phillies that just got done man-handling the Florida Marlins and seizing first place in the N.L. East. Not a good situation for Cincinnati and they will be facing Kyle Kendrick who beat them in Cincinnati back in April. During the same homestand Bronson Arroyo got touched up for 5 runs in a 5-3 loss to Philadelphia. Arroyo is also pitching for the second time in 8 days after pitching on 3 days rest Wednesday. This tired Cincinnati team will get touched up tonight by a Phillies team that has scored 70 runs in winning 6 out of their last 7.

PHILLIES RUN LINE +140 (5 DIMES)

DIAMONDBACKS AT BREWERS (MLB) - 8:05 PM, ET

The Brewers came off a rough road trip where they went 4-6 to go on tear at home where on this current homestand they are 5-1 and just finished sweeping the Houston Astros outscoring them 19-3. The beat up Diamondbacks are playing their 27th game in 27 days and are 3-4 in the first game of a road series. Now they travel to Milwaukee where the Brewers bats have caught fire, and they are just 4-9 since 2004. Jeff Suppan pitched a 1-0 gem against Atlanta lasting 8 innings. He's had plenty of rest and is ready to get back on the mound at home where he is 2-0 with 0.93 ERA in four starts this season. On the other side Doug Davis has struggled against his former team in two starts, going 0-1 and giving up 4 homers and eight runs in a total of 8 innings. The Brewers bats will light up the Milwaukee night as the Brewers roll.

BREWERS RUN LINE +160 (5 DIMES)

ROCKIES AT DODGERS (MLB) - 10:10 PM, ET

Colorado has lost twelve road games in a row but played the last 3 in Chicago TOUGH, losing the first two by a single run and the third by 2 against a very talented and HOT Cubs team. Now the Rockies bring their road woes to Los Angeles where the Dodgers come home after a rough road trip where they lost 6 of 7. And after a late flight back from New York where they dropped three of four the Dodgers get little rest before a 7:10 PM game against a HUNGRY Rockies team that coach Clint Hurdle said is playing good and I agree. The Rockies played well in Chicago and will do so again tonight to end the losing streak. The long trip home and the short rest will hurt the Dodgers tonight and teh Rockies will take advantage of it. Even though the Rockies have lost five of six to the Dodger they won the last seven meetings of 2007. Derek Lowe throwing for the Dodgers tonight is 0-4 his last seven starts with a 6.02 ERA. Lowe has also dropped four straight against the Rockies who got their only win against the Dodgers while facing Lowe in their last meeting. Reynolds getting his first start against Los Angeles has not been booked yet and will use this to his advantage to keep the Dodger hitters off balance.

rza - did VR upgrade the St L RL to a 2 unit play?...his website says he has 1 three unit play, 3 two unit plays, and 1 one unit play.

STL is now a 2 unit heavy hitter - he's splitting it with 1 unit on the ML and one unit on the RL.
