ANALYSIS
Things didn't appear too promising for the Hokies of Virginia Tech following
their excruciating 33-30 Labor Day loss to BoiseSt in the final 1:09, & ensuing
21-16 loss (led 16-7 in 3rd) to JsMadison just 5 days later. But rebound, they
most certainly have, reeling off 11 straight wins, becoming the 1st team in
Division 1A history to win 11 consecutive games after opening with 2 losses.
And in the process, they've risen to the 11th & 12th spots in current polls. Led
by ACC Player of the Year, QB Taylor (2,521 yds, 61%, 23/4; 3 TD passes in
ACC title win over FloridaSt), & a trio of quality RBs (Williams, Wilson, Evans),
Tech is relentless, averaging 39 ppg in their final 9 outings. And, as noted in
the above stats, the Gobblers are again masters of the game-turning play,
leading the nation in TO margin. This marks Beamer's 18th consecutive bowl
season (8-9 SU & ATS), & certainly his most satisfying. His opponent's bowl
record, obviously pales in comparison, as this one marks only the 2nd bowl for
Jim Harbaugh as head man with the Cardinal of Stanford. But the rise of this
program is stunning, as he inherited a squad fresh off a 1-11 ('06) season, but
has gone 4-8, 5-7, 8-5, & 11-1 since. Last year, the Card entered its Sun Bowl
game vs Oklahoma at 441 ypg, but had 28-13 FD & 477-262 yd deficits in that
loss. But they had to go it without QB Luck (hand) in that one, relying almost
entirely on RB Gerhart. This year, Luck is healthy. And what a force: 3,051
yds, 70%, 28/7. And he also ran for 438 yds, to supplement RB Taylor's 1,023
yds & 15 TDs. Turnover-wise, Stanford finished 3rd best in the land, so a rare
wash for the Hokies. Obviously, this will be decided by the breaks. A dog call.
