Opinion
Orlando (+1 ½) over BOSTON
04-May-09 05:05 PM Pacific Time
Boston was significantly overrated heading into their first round series with Chicago, but the oddsmakers have adjusted their rating on the Celtics heading into this series. Using Boston’s 31 games without Kevin Garnett (but with Allen and Pierce playing) against Orlando’s games with their current lineup (i.e. since acquiring PG Rafer Alston) I get Boston by just 1 point in this game and I still only get 2 points if I factor in Boston’s habit of winning more close games than they lose. Orlando applies to a solid 26-12 ATS game 1 angle and I’ll lean with Orlando at +1 or +1 ½ and I’ll consider the Magic a Strong Opinion at +2 or more. I have no opinion on the total.
3 Star Selection
L.A. LAKERS (-8 ½) over Houston
04-May-09 07:35 PM Pacific Time
The Lakers win most of their home games by double-digit margins regardless of the level of opposition. The Lakers tend to let up at home against weaker teams (winning by 10 to 13 points as big favorites) while playing with more focus against better teams and still winning by double-digits most of the time. Los Angeles is 10-4 ATS at home when favored by 9 points or less, winning 10 of those 14 games by 9 points or more and the Lakers beat Houston by 29 points and by 12 points in two meetings at the Forum this season. The Lakers were 4-0 straight up and 4-0 ATS overall against the Rockets this season and I don’t see that trend changing in game 1 given the 26-1 ATS game 1 situation that applies to Los Angeles tonight. The Lakers are 5-2 ATS in game 1 of a playoff series the last 4 years (3-1 ATS at home) and should come through with a supreme effort tonight. I’ll take the Lakers in a 3-Star Best Bet at -9 points or less and for 2-Stars at -9 ½ or -10. I have no opinion on the total.
3-Stars at -9 or less, 2-Stars at -9 1/2 or -10.
