NBA Playoffs Betting News & Notes
Jamal Crawford got emotional in accepting his National Basketball Association Sixth Man award and, like Kevin Durant this week, it may have buoyed the Los Angeles Clippers in what has been a turbulent playoffs so far. Crawford didn't cry or talk as long as Durant did when the Oklahoma City star picked up the league's MVP award.

But he thanked everyone he could think of on Thursday, especially his teammates and Clippers coach Doc Rivers for keeping them together in the wake of owner Donald Sterling's racist comments that led to his lifetime ban from the NBA. Crawford's award was some of the best news the Clippers have had in the last 1 1/2 weeks, and the feel-good atmosphere during his acceptance speech could provide some necessary fuel heading into Game #3 against the Thunder (10:30 PM EST) on Friday night at Staples Center.

•Heat Toy With Nets In Game #2, Win 94-82: LeBron James scored 22 points, Chris Bosh added 18 and the Miami Heat took a 2-0 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinal series by beating the Brooklyn Nets 94-82 on Thursday night. Dwyane Wade had 14 and Ray Allen scored 13 for the Heat, who tied a franchise record with their eighth straight playoff victory. Mirza Teletovic set a Nets playoff record with six 3-pointers, on his way to a 20-point night off the bench. Shaun Livingston scored 15, Paul Pierce had 13 and Joe Johnson added 13 more for the Nets. Game #3 is Saturday night in Brooklyn.

•Spurs Roll To 2-0 Lead Over Trail Blazers: Kawhi Leonard scored 20 points, Tony Parker had 16 points and 10 assists, and the San Antonio Spurs rolled to a 114-97 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday night for a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinals. Manu Ginobili added 16 points, Marco Belinelli scored 13, and Tiago Splitter had 10 points and 10 rebounds in the Spurs' second convincing victory to open the best-of-seven series. Nicolas Batum scored 21 points for Portland. Damian Lillard had 19 points and LaMarcus Aldridge added 16 points and 10 rebounds, but Portland again struggled to score against San Antonio's suffocating defense. The Trail Blazers host Game #3 on Saturday night.

STATSYSTEMS SPORTS NL PITCHING REPORT
FRIDAY, MAY 9TH 2014
INFORMATION WORTH BETTING ON EACH DAY
_______________________________________

#951 ST LOUIS @ #952 PITTSBURGH - 7:05 PM
•Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (2-3, 2.55 ERA, WHIP: 1.158) - Wacha is facing the Pirates for the first time since Game 4 of last year’s NL Division Series, when he threw 7 1/3 no-hit innings before allowing Pedro Alvarez’s solo homer. The 22-year-old has been a victim of poor run support in recent starts, including last Saturday’s 3-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Wacha, who is seeking his first win since April 13, ranks near the top of the league in strikeouts with 50 in 42 1/3 innings covering seven games.

•Pirates LH Francisco Liriano (0-3, 4.54 ERA, WHIP: 1.407) - Liriano has gone 10 consecutive regular-season starts without a win and failed to pitch into the fourth inning in each of his last two outings. Jhonny Peralta is 13-for-40 with two home runs against the 30-year-old, who is 4-1 with a 1.85 ERA in six career starts against the Cardinals. Liriano, who has been battling a groin injury suffered late in spring training, owns an 8-2 record and 2.24 ERA in 15 starts at PNC Park since the beginning of last season.

--KEY STAT: LIRIANO is 16-5 UNDER (+10.9 Units) as an underdog of +100 to +150 over the last 3 seasons. (Team's Record)
The average score was LIRIANO 4.0, OPPONENT 3.1.

•Phillies RH Roberto Hernandez (2-1, 4.50 ERA, WHIP: 1.412) - Hernandez allowed only four hits over 7 1/3 scoreless innings his last time out against Washington. Prior to that outing, the 33-year-old had not worked more than six frames in a start all season. Only two members of the Mets have extensive experience against Hernandez, including Curtis Granderson (.415 average and three homers in 41 at-bats with a .500 on-base percentage).

--KEY STAT: HERNANDEZ is 23-38 (-17.4 Units) against the money line versus teams whose hitters strike out 7 or more times/game since 1997. (Team's Record)
The average score was HERNANDEZ 3.8, OPPONENT 4.6.

--HERNANDEZ is 4-13 (-10.9 Units) against the money line in night games over the last 2 seasons. (Team's Record)

•Mets RH Jenrry Mejia (3-0, 5.23 ERA, WHIP: 1.530) - Following back-to-back starts in which he did not allow a run, Mejia has struggled over his last two outings. He was charged with season highs of eight runs and nine hits in a season-low 4 1/3 innings Saturday against Colorado and has given up more hits in his last two starts (17) than he did in his first four outings (16). Philadelphia's hitters may look to attack early, as opponents are 10-for-24 (.417) with two homers and 10 RBIs when facing an 0-0 count against Mejia.

#955 COLORADO @ #956 CINCINNATI - 7:10 PM
•Rockies RH Jhoulys Chacin (0-1, 7.20 ERA, WHIP: 2.600) - Chacin, who is 37-41 with a 3.60 ERA while allowing 549 hits in 594 2/3 innings as a starter, yielded four runs, eight hits and five walks in five innings of Colorado's 5-1 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday. "The first three innings, I wasn't throwing strikes, and when you don't throw strikes, you aren't going to win,'' Chacin told the Denver Post. "I have some things to fix on my mechanics too. I was throwing the ball up too much in the beginning." The 26-year-old Venezuelan, who won a career-high 14 games and posted a 3.47 ERA last season, is 1-2 with a 3.13 ERA in five contests (three starts) against Cincinnati.

The average score was CHACIN 3.1, OPPONENT 3.3.

•Reds RH Johnny Cueto (3-2, 1.31 ERA, WHIP: 0.727) - Cueto, who is trying to become the first Cincinnati pitcher to throw eight or more innings in four consecutive starts since Jose Rijo in 1990, has struck out 60 in 55 frames - 21 in his last two starts - and has a 0.73 WHIP and .132 batting average against this season. "Right now, he's very, very locked in," Reds manager Bryan Price told reporters about the 28-year-old Dominican. "He's got a good working relationship with (catcher) Brayan Pena. I can't imagine him throwing the ball any better than he is right now." Cueto is 2-2 with a 4.05 ERA in five starts against the Rockies but hasn't faced them since 2012.

--KEY STAT: CUETO is 28-12 UNDER (+14.3 Units) as a favorite of -110 or higher over the last 3 seasons. (Team's Record)

He allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings in a no-decision against the St. Louis Cardinals. Hammel is 1-3 with a 6.39 ERA in six starts against the Braves, but the win was a one-hitter in the most recent meeting in 2012.

•Braves RH Julio Teheran (2-2, 1.80 ERA, WHIP: 0.880) - Teheran has posted quality starts in all seven of his outings but is winless in his last three. The 23-year-old Colombian was a tough-luck loser last time out, allowing three runs - all on solo homers - over seven innings in a 3-1 loss to San Francisco. The average score was BUMGARNER 3.1, OPPONENT 2.7.

•Dodgers LH Paul Maholm (1-2, 4.70 ERA, WHIP: 1.564) - Maholm has been a valuable cog in the Dodgers’ rotation while replacing injured starters Clayton Kershaw and Hyun-Jin Ryu, but he’s likely headed back to the bullpen when Ryu returns later this month. The 31-year-old is 2-4 with a 4.23 ERA in 12 career starts against San Francisco, including 0-1 with a 5.23 ERA in two starts this season. He has appeared in five career games against the Angels, going 2-2 with a 5.12 ERA. One thing to keep an eye on with Richards is that he has walked multiple batters in every start this season, although he has limited the damage by yielding a total of one homer in 38 innings.

--KEY STAT: RICHARDS is 9-1 UNDER (+7.8 Units) in road games versus teams whose hitters strike out 7 or more times/game over the last 2 seasons. (Team's Record)

McGowan's career numbers against the Angels are strong - a 3.44 ERA and a .227 opponents' batting average - although he is just 1-4 lifetime against Los Angeles.

•Twins RH Phil Hughes (3-1, 4.72 ERA, WHIP: 1.311) - In his first season with Minnesota, Hughes has won his last three outings and turned in a quality start in each, yielding a combined six earned runs in 19 1/3 innings. Hughes, who has received 28 runs of support in his four wins, beat Detroit with a season-high seven innings of two-run ball on April 26. He has no answers for two-time MVP Miguel Cabrera, who has a .536 average and five homers in 28 at-bats against Hughes.

•Tigers RH Justin Verlander (4-1, 2.68 ERA, WHIP: 1.319) - Verlander has not been as overpowering as in years past, but is still 4-0 over his last five starts and has yet to permit more than three runs in a game. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Kansas City last time out and wound up allowing three runs on four hits and four walks in seven innings. Verlander is 14-7 with a 3.12 ERA and a pair of complete games in 27 career starts against the Twins.

The Birmingham, Ala., native boasts 48 strikeouts in 45 innings, but has been much better at home (2-1, 2.43 ERA) than on the road (0-2, 5.87). Kluber did not give up a hit in two innings of relief against Tampa Bay last May.

--KEY STAT: KLUBER is 10-1 (+9.3 Units) against the money line versus poor power teams - averaging 0.9 or less HR's/game over the last 2 seasons. (Team's Record)

The 24-year-old has not gone past five innings since his first outing and gave up three runs over four-plus frames in his last turn against the New York Yankees. Odorizzi faced Cleveland twice in 2012, allowing four runs in 7 1/3 innings and Carlos Santana homered off him.

#971 BOSTON @ #972 TEXAS - 8:05 PM
•Red Sox RH Clay Buchholz (2-2, 5.63 ERA, WHIP: 1.594) - Buchholz yielded one run and three hits in 6 1/3 innings of Boston's 7-1 victory over Oakland on May 2 and works on two extra days' rest because the Red Sox were off Monday and Thursday. #975 NY YANKEES @ #976 MILWAUKEE - 8:10 PM
•Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (4-0, 2.53 ERA, WHIP: 0.961) - Tanaka's one issue so far has been his inability to keep the ball in the park on a consistent basis. The Rays clubbed two home runs against him on Saturday, which gives opponents five blasts in Tanaka's last three starts and seven overall, tied for the fourth-highest total in the American League entering Thursday. He has 15 strikeouts with zero walks in his two road starts.

•Brewers RH Yovani Gallardo (2-1, 2.47 ERA, WHIP: 1.191) - Following a phenomenal April, Gallardo opened May with his first loss and first non-quality start of the year, giving up four runs and nine hits in six frames at Cincinnati on Saturday. He has allowed only three runs on 15 hits (no home runs) in 19 innings at home and has lasted at least six innings in each of his seven outings overall. Gallardo, who is 5-5 with a 3.30 ERA in interleague action, has never faced the Yankees.

--KEY STAT: GALLARDO is 10-2 OVER (+8.1 Units) in home games when working on 5 or 6 days rest over the last 3 seasons. (Team's Record)
The average score was GALLARDO 4.8, OPPONENT 4.8.

--GALLARDO is 15-3 OVER (+11.8 Units) in home games after a loss over the last 3 seasons. (Team's Record)
The average score was GALLARDO 5.0, OPPONENT 5.2.

#977 ARIZONA @ #978 CHI WHITE SOX - 8:10 PM
•Diamondbacks RH Brandon McCarthy (1-5, 4.67 ERA, WHIP: 1.286) - McCarthy snapped a streak of five straight losses his last time out, tossing seven scoreless innings to win at San Diego. It was his second straight quality start, and he has allowed just two runs and 10 hits over 14 frames in his last two outings. McCarthy is 1-1 with a 3.50 ERA in three starts against the White Sox, the team for which he pitched in his first two major league seasons.

--KEY STAT: MCCARTHY is 5-16 (-14.6 Units) against the money line when the total is 8.5 to 10 over the last 2 seasons. (Team's Record)
The average score was MCCARTHY 3.7, OPPONENT 5.3.

--MCCARTHY is 1-12 (-12.9 Units) against the money line on the road with a money line of -100 to -150 since 1997. (Team's Record)
The average score was MCCARTHY 3.5, OPPONENT 5.5.

•White Sox RH Andre Rienzo (2-0, 4.50 ERA, WHIP: 1.556) - Rienzo was inefficient in his last start, leaving in the fifth inning after allowing three runs on seven hits and four walks. The 25-year-old Brazilian kept the White Sox in the game, though, and they held on for a 4-3 win at Cleveland. Rienzo is making his first start against a National League team.

#979 WASHINGTON @ #980 OAKLAND - 10:05 PM
•Nationals RH Doug Fister (2013: 14-9, 3.67 ERA, WHIP: N/A) - Fister is set to make his season debut with his new team after missing all of last month with a strained lat muscle. He has reached double figures in wins in each of the last three seasons and should be a nice boost for a pitching staff that entered Wednesday tied with the Athletics for the third-lowest ERA in the majors at 3.06. Fister has some experience pitching at Oakland Coliseum from his years with the Seattle Mariners, owning a 2-3 mark with a 2.41 ERA in six career starts.

--KEY STAT: FISTER is 16-4 UNDER (+11.4 Units) versus poor power teams - averaging 0.9 or less HR's/game over the last 3 seasons. (Team's Record)
The average score was FISTER 3.9, OPPONENT 3.1.

--FISTER is 13-31 (-19.0 Units) against the money line on the road when the total is 7 to 8.5 since 1997. (Team's Record)
The average score was FISTER 3.0, OPPONENT 4.2.

•Athletics LH Tommy Milone (0-3, 5.86 ERA, WHIP: 1.554) - The Athletics haven’t won in Milone’s five starts this season, leaving his spot in the rotation in jeopardy if he continues to struggle. He took another step back Saturday against the Boston Red Sox, surrendering three home runs in four innings of a 6-3 loss, but in his defense Oakland has scored only 16 runs in his five appearances this season. Milone is 6-4 in his career in interleague play, posting one of his two complete games against the Los Angeles Dodgers in June 2012 in Oakland.

--KEY STAT: MILONE is 27-15 (+12.7 Units) against the money line in night games over the last 3 seasons. (Team's Record)
The average score was MILONE 4.7, OPPONENT 3.8.

DAVE ESSLER Friday MLB Thoughts and free pick

Cardinals-Pirates: Pittsburgh a respectable 10-10 at home, and lost two of three to St. Louis not long ago. Interesting thing there is the one they WON was a gem by Liriano, and Wacha didn’t pitch in that series. The Cards are actually 0-4 in Wacha’s four road starts, but his (Wacha’s) stats are tremendous, just getting zero run support. Since the Pirates haven’t seen much of him, I like the F5 under here.

Phillies-Mets: Mets with a day off and the Phillies obviously playing North of the Border on Thursday. Fausto is a huge grounball pitcher and as poorly as the Phillies have been hitting I’d have to lean to the under. Mejia has been hammered his last two starts, but against the Rockies and hot-hitting Marlins, so he’s perhaps due for SOME regression. However, with that in mind, if this goes to 8 we’ll look at the under, and we’ll take Granderson in our fantasy leagues. IMO Mets win this late.

Rockies-Reds: Pretty much disrespecting the Rockies and simply loving Cueto at -175, IMO. No chance in hell of laying -175 even w/Chacin pitching. I do know the Reds have a day off and the Rockies don’t, so if Colorado doesn’t need a ton of bullpen we’ll look at the Rockies RL, without even looking at pitcher/batter stats.

Cubs-Braves: I am simply not touching a Braves game for a while, or at least not touching the Braves, especially at -175 with Cubs having no rest. Teheran can be great, but we backed him last time and he got hammered. Hammel is at least servicable at times, so PERHAPS I could consider the over at 6.5.

Giants-Dodgers: Interesting that Bumgarner is only -120 or so, and I say only because Vogelsong was “only” +130 against Beckett. So, thrown in Maholm and there’ s .50 difference. Not so sure that the value here isn’t with the Dodgers in the second game back, and Maholm is exactly the type of junk pitcher that gives the Giants trouble. Obviously the Dodgers have seen plenty of Bumgarner, already twice this season alone. Dodgers or nothing.

Miami-San Diego: Interesting the the Fish go from +125 with Turner to -150 with Jose, and on the road. With Miami’s road record and a low total, as you’d expect, I might consider the Padres RL. Jose typically doesn’t pitch deep into games, and the Padres have a better bullpen, IMO.

Houston-Baltimore: I actually like the Astros MUCH better against a LHP and seriously considered them against the Tigers, and with the Orioles coming back from a division series against the Rays, I will consider the Astros again, at the very least the RL.

Angels-Blue Jays: Angels opened as favorites and already the Jays and McGowan are -115 most places. With the Jays playing Thursday and the Angels having the night off. I’d like to think they’re not quite that easy, and if the Jays have to use much of that bullpen against the Phillies, I can’t take them against the Angels.

Twins-Tigers: So, do the Tigers take it out on Hughes like many do, or do the Twins who know Verlander so well put up a fight. That total sitting at only 7.5 might be the tell-tale sign for me. Hughes been much better lately and the wind in blowing in so perhaps some of his flyballs get knocked down. If the total stays or drops, I will play the Twins RL, but cautiously, since they (the Twins) are very streaky and perhaps have started the downturn.

Cleveland-Rays: Cleveland an early game in probably in their hotel in Tampa by the time the Rays started with the Orioles. Kluber hasn’t been that great on the road, and threw 100+ pitches in three of the last four games, so IF the Rays don’t need much bullpen, I could make a case for the home dog. Cleveland is just NOT a road favorite in Tampa, IMO. Maybe they are, but I can’t go there unless the Rays/Price use pen.

Boston-Texas: Obviously the Red Sox rested and have won four of five against decent teams, while the Rangers played that home and home against the Rockies, including Wednesday night. As much as Buccholz has been either great or horrible, Boston is one of the best teams at working pitch counts and getting to pens, so I lean Boston.

Royals-Mariners: Vargas has been pretty solid this season, and Maurer has not. I could only take the Royals here, and would look at the total after Thursday’s game.

Yankees-Brewers: Well, no DH for the Yankees. I wonder what Tanaka is like at the plate. I DO know Gallardo is very good at the plate. Tanaka has thrown an ass load of pitches and given up SOME runs lately, and Gallardo CAN keep the ball on the park and on the ground. This will be interesting, if they’re hearty and leave the roof open, I might look at the over here.

D-Backs-Chicago: Obvously Chicago not rested but home and Arizona rested with arguably their best pitcher going. Yes, I know McCarthy is 1-6, but his stats are as good as anyone on the staff, really. Rienzo might be 3-0, but his stats are horrible, however the White Sox pen has been terrific. Almost this this is a F5 over here and lean D-Backs for the game if Chicago needs much bullpen against the Cubs.

Washington-Oakland: The “obvious” play here is the A’s, but let’s not forget the Nationals get the DH and they’ve been hammering LHP.

free pick – 980 OAK / 979 WAS – OVER 7.5
Analysis: I’ll throw this out there now at this price. I suppose it COULD go to 7, but that’s why I do what I do. If you want to or have the time to wait, or, bet it now, your choice.
