Tonight in the NBA I’m playing the trend I mentioned a few days ago, betting on teams that are trying to keep or improve their playoff position against teams that are just putting in the time, drawing a check, and wishing for the off-season. Plus, I believe there’s an edge in the line for all three games and I’m going with the advantage.
Take the Milwaukee Bucks in Pick’em game at Detroit Pistons. This is one of many tough matchups in the NBA tonight. Detroit has owned the Bucks 2 of 3 games this year, including a
Pistons 93-81 win on Feb. 9 in Milwaukee. But, the
Pistons are done for the season and the Bucks are sitting in the 9th spot in the East, two games behind Charlotte. In spite of their 20-year-old rookie
Brandon Jennings hitting a scoring slump in January, the
Bucks have won 6 of their last 10, and beat the spread 7 of those games. They
win against the spread almost 60% of the time on the Road. The Bucks see the weak teams in the last 3 spots in the East and made a move this week for more offense picking up Point Guard
John Salmons, who will make his Bucks debut tonight. There is an edge here with the line (Pick’em), which should be favoring Milwaukee by at least a point.
Take the Bucks to Win.
Take Toronto Raptors -2 at the New Jersey Nets. The line in this game has been hard hit by the absence of
Chris Bosh,
who will not travel to New Jersey with the team because of a sprained ankle. What should be an 8 or 9 point line for the Raptors to Cover has been shrunk to 2. Can the Raptors do a “no Kobe, no problem”? I think so.
Toronto, now 5th in the East, went into the All-Star Break one of the hottest teams in the league winning 8 of 9. They lost a tough overtime game after the break to the up and down
Memphis Grizzlies. The
Nets are still on pace to finish with the worst record in NBA history and they’re
one of the leagues worst at covering the spread at home (36%). The Raptor know how to win; expect
Hedo Turkoglu to step up and cover the soft line.
Take the Raptors and the Points.
Take New Orleans Hornets -4 at Home vs. Indiana Pacers. How good are the New Orleans Hornets without
Chris Paul? They’ve
lost 5 of 8 games since the All-Star went down with injury,
but those losses included some of the best teams in the NBA – Utah, Orlando, Oklahoma City, and Phoenix. In this stretch, they also lost to Philadelphia at home, but the 76ers play surprisingly tough on the Road.
The three teams they beat: Boston by 8 Points, Charlotte by 5 Points, and Memphis by 7. The Hornets set in the 10th spot in the West right now, four games behind Portland (the 8th seed); they expect Chris Paul to return this season and they want to be in contention when he does. Tonight they’re playing the Indiana
Pacers who are just trying to finish out the season; the same Pacers they beat in Indiana in January (with Paul). The line in this game is soft because of an overreaction to the losses in this Paul-less stretch.
Expect the Hornets to Cover tonight.
