Florida Marlins
With the Cubs now reaching as high as -290 in a couple of key precincts, we have to get in play here for at least a small amount, and in this case a small amount pays off in a big way.
Chicago is sitting at .500 right now because that is all that the Cubs have been. Consider a starting lineup that will have half of the position players batting at .189 or less and you can see how difficult it is to merit this range. And we are talking about key cogs not contributing, like Derrek Lee, Milton Bradley and Geovanny Soto, along with Aramis Ramirez having to sit out again. Graham Taylor does not have to be anything special at all to put the Marlins in the game against this most limited bunch.
Florida is a sharp 8-4 on the road so far, and the Marlins out-played the Cubs in a major way last night, with 10 hits and six walks, including four of the hits going for extra bases, vs. five hits and one walk for Chicago. And by breaking the game wide open in the 10th they were able to get the win without closer Matt Lindstrom having to work. This lineup brings more than enough punch and confidence to take on Rich Harden at this price, particularly with a lot of power into a pitcher that has already given up five home runs in 21 innings. And with Harden not having worked beyond the 6th inning all season the latter stages can be a real problem for Lou Piniella - the Chicago bullpen is lacking in options, with Carlos Marmol off of back-to-back games and 42 pitches; Kevin Gregg off of back-to-back and 50; and Aaron Heilman a likely no-go as well off of last night’s ugly outing in which 29 pitches could not lead to a single out.
