I don't consider him overrated. I think most would consider him a top 5 coach in the NFL. And that's probably what he is.

1. Bill
2. Reid
3. McVay

I'd probably rank Payton 4th. Slightly ahead of guys like Arians, Shanny, Carrol, Vrabel, McDermott and Tomlin.
Tomlin and Shanahan over McVay

Someone in this thread needs to recalculate how many NFC Championship games Payton coached with the saints

Hint: More then 2

Would take Payton and Shanny over Tomlin in 2 seconds

you can’t just go by resumes with coaches, the Steelers were a SB contender before Tomlin got there and he had a franchise QB from the jump. He’s a very good motivator but defensive coaches not really making good HCa these days

I do think ranking coaches is somewhat of a fools errand, put them in tiers and keep it moving

Even the guy who is widely considered the best coach of all-time has a sub .500 coaching record without a franchise QB.

Having thee guy at that position is kind of important.

OOPS, I forgot that the Payton led Saints lost to Rex Grossman in an NFC Championship Game.

Anyway, Andy Reid is coaching in his 8th Conf Championship game tomorrow and Reid tied Don Shula for the third-most career postseason wins by a head coach in NFL history (19). Only Tom Landry (20) and Bill Belichick (31) have more playoff victories than Reid.
Funny, I don't see Sean Payton on that list.

Not sure why you would take Payton over Tomlin given that Payton has had more losing seasons. Payton only coached 1 season without Brees and they stunk.

Anyway, as far as tiers:

Top Tier:
Bill, Reid, Shanahan, McVeigh

2nd Tier
Tomlin, Payton, McDermott, Carrol

3rd Tier
Arians, Zach Taylor

Dude . They started 4 QBs this year . They were 5-1 before J Winston got hurt .

They were 9-8 with wins over Green Bay , New England , Tampa Bay twice .

And they were 99.8% to make the playoffs with 2 mins left in the Rams game in week 18 according to Next Gen Stats .

Had 38 players and coaches out for the Miami game was starting players off the street in that game but still somehow went 9-8.
Is that’ your definition of stunk ?

They were 8-0 w/o Brees in '19 and '20 combined and were on their way to being 6-2 without him this year when Jameis died. Then a ton of other guys died after that, Thomas didn't play all year because of an ankle injury so they probably had 1 of the worst QB's and receiving corps in the league after that. Just too many injuries.

Payton would've won COY this year if they just had a few less injuries.

LaFleur is obviously up there, he's had 3 straight great years and doesn't get nearly enough credit for resurrecting Rodgers career after his pedestrian '17 and '18 runs. From the Shanahan tree.

Harbaugh is obviously up there, Ravens perennial contender.

Vrabel should win COY in 2 weeks (or I'll be eating dog food), he's done a nice job to do all that with a Dolphins retread at QB.

If you take away the 5 games Siemian and Book started the saints went 9-3 this year .

I promise you Andy Reid and Bill Belichick ain’t winning many if any games with Ian Book and Trever Siemian

He's 39-10 in 3 seasons....2 of his losses this year were a game they didn't try to win @ Det wk 18 and Flynn's start @ KC. You win 80% of your games over 3 years (one of the best starts to a coaching career in history) and you certainly warrant a mention.

GB wasn't doing shit before he got there in '17 and '18

Frauders would be out of the NFL and selling insurance if it wasn't for him

Probably whole life rather than term, he seems like the type for that

Winston under Payton was solid. 14 TDs; 3 ints; one more rushing TD. Like Patsfan said he had little receiving help. The Defense was pretty good. Why do you think Payton is leaving your team, Chop. I don't get it.

Team is in a precarious position cap wise and who knows how ready Winston is for the season (not to mention just he's Winston, not exactly the most appetizing option to comeback to)

He's probably just over it though, he can have his pick of jobs in 12 months.

Because he can name his team in a year . And will be the highest paid coach in NFL history .

And the team he takes over won’t have -70 million in cap space .

Also can become the first coach in NFL history to win SBs with multiple teams .

Im bummed he’s gone . Really sucks for me. 10x worse then Brees retiring .

But if I were him I would have probably done the same thing .

All I can do is say thanks for the great 16 years and hopefully the saints can get someone to keep them relevant
