Scientology and the Jehovah's Witnesses: Two peas in a pod!

Love and Justice in the Face of Wickedness Part 4

Millions of Jehovah's Witnesses were recently reassured in a Watchtower magazine article that their religion abhors child sex abuse and "endeavors" to report offenders to the authorities. What they haven't been told is that Watchtower is actively petitioning the Supreme Court of the United States to establish its constitutional "right" to protect accused child molesters from the law by keeping their details secret. The Watchtower in Focus team is joined by filmmaker Javier Ortiz and Scientology watchdog Tony Ortega to discuss these developments.

What is a "professed" Jehovah's Witness?

Father of abuse victim confronts the Jehovah's Witnesses

Join John Viney, former JW of 50+ years and elder of 20+ years on a journey around a JW convention. John is the father of an abuse victim and confronts Jehovah's Witness in attendance at the 'Love Never Fails' Convention 2019 in Cardiff. He uses their own Watchtower magazine to question child safety within their organisation. In May 2019, the Watchtower introduced the idea of 'professed' Jehovah's Witnesses - Witnesses who have abused children but are still allowed in the congregation.

New Law Goes Into Effect Today

Adult Victims Of Childhood Sex Abuse In New York Can Sue Alleged Abusers - New York Headquartered Watchtower Lawyers Gear Up For the Great Flood

A new law that goes into effect Wednesday, gives adult victims of childhood sex abuse in New York one year to bring civil lawsuits against their alleged abusers and the institutions that may have allowed the abuse.

The one-year filing period is known as a "look-back window," and allows victims to bring cases that used to be beyond the state's statute of limitations that legislators overhauled this year. Manhattan Assemblymember Yuh-line Niou is one of the people who voted for the new law, touting it at a news conference on Tuesday.

"The passing of this legislation is telling survivors like myself that our stories matter to our government, and that we count in the eyes of the law," Niou said.
The law gives survivors more time to file civil and criminal cases going forward, and opens the look-back window for old cases. Most survivors in New York used to be cut off after they turned 23.

"A victim would get their courage up, they'd go to talk to a lawyer, and they would be told, 'Oh you're too late. You're not just too late, you're too late by 20 years,'" said Marci Hamilton, who is director of the advocacy group Child USA and a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania.
Critics of the look-back window say the cases may be based on faulty evidence or faded memories, but survivors say it's a chance to finally have their day in court. Jim Corcoran, 74, is one of hundreds of people suing Manhattan's Rockefeller University Hospital over alleged abuse by one of its doctors, Reginald Archibald, who worked there for roughly four decades and died in 2007. Corcoran said he wants the institution held accountable.

"This guy was a predator," Corcoran said. "It's a common sense thing. You're a fiduciary, you're supposed to be protecting these children."

Rockefeller Hospital has said it "profoundly apologizes" to any former patients who were harmed. This month, it sued its insurers to make sure they'd provide coverage for the lawsuits.
New York is not the first state to open this kind of filing period for victims. California had a one-year look-back window in 2003, which led to about a thousand cases and hundreds of millions of dollars in settlements. Since Minnesota closed its look-back window in 2016, multiple Catholic dioceses have filed for bankruptcy protection.
New York Courts are expecting to see hundreds, if not thousands, of lawsuits filed in the coming weeks and months.

More lawsuits against the Jehovah's Witnesses Governing Body Gang of Eight

Sociologist James A. Beckford, in his 1975 study of Jehovah's Witnesses, classified the group's organizational structure as Totalizing, characterized by an assertive leadership, specific and narrow objectives, control over competing demands on members' time and energy, and control over the quality of new members. Other characteristics of the classification include likelihood of friction with secular authorities, reluctance to co-operate with other religious organizations, a high rate of membership turnover, a low rate of doctrinal change, and strict uniformity of beliefs among members. Beckford identified the group's chief characteristics as historicism (identifying historical events as relating to the outworking of God's purpose), absolutism (conviction that Jehovah's Witness leaders dispense absolute truth), activism (capacity to motivate members to perform missionary tasks), rationalism (conviction that Witness doctrines have a rational basis devoid of mystery), authoritarianism (rigid presentation of regulations without the opportunity for criticism) and world indifference (rejection of certain secular requirements and medical treatments). Sociologist Bryan R. Wilson, in his consideration of five religious groups including Jehovah's Witnesses, noted that each of the denominations: "exists in a state of tension with the wider society;" "imposes tests of merit on would-be members;" "exercises stern discipline, regulating the declared beliefs and the life habits of members and prescribing and operating sanctions for those who deviate, including the possibility of expulsion;" "demands sustained and total commitment from its members, and the subordination, and perhaps even the exclusion of all other interests." A sociological comparative study by the Pew Research Center found that Jehovah's Witnesses in the United States ranked highest in statistics for getting no further than high school graduation, belief in God, importance of religion in one's life, frequency of religious attendance, frequency of prayers, frequency of Bible reading outside of religious services, belief their prayers are answered, belief that their religion can only be interpreted one way, belief that theirs is the only one true faith leading to eternal life, opposition to abortion, and opposition to homosexuality. In the study, Jehovah's Witnesses ranked lowest in statistics for having an interest in politics. It was also among the most racially and ethnically diverse religious groups in the US.
