Preview: Blue Jays (63-47) at Royals (51-58)

Game: 2
Venue: Ewing M. Kauffman Stadium
Date: August 06, 2016 7:15 PM EDT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Toronto Blue Jays have opted to go with a six-man rotation instead of moving Cy Young candidate Aaron Sanchez to the bullpen.

Sanchez makes his 22nd start Saturday against the Kansas City Royals. He has thrown a career-high 139 1/3 innings.

"If all six of them are throwing good, we'll keep rolling with it," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "If somebody's scuffling and we want to change things up, we can do that. We're just going to roll with this. We like all six. See where the hell it goes."

Sanchez is 11-1 with an American League best 2.71 ERA, while holding opposing batters to a .225 average.

After acquiring left-hander Francisco Liriano in a Monday trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates, the original plan was to have Sanchez pitch out of the bullpen the final two months of the season, keeping his innings and pitches down.

That, however, created a commotion among the players, who are in a win-now mode.

Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins flew to Houston to meet with the players and the organization did an about-face on opting to keep the hard-throwing Sanchez in the rotation.

Sanchez, who had not suffered a loss since April 22 to the Athletics, has thrown 2,078 pitches this year. He threw 474 pitches in five July starts, going at least seven innings in four of them.

With a six-man rotation and a seven-man bullpen, Gibbons has only a three-man bench.

"But, we'll deal with it," Gibbons said. "You know, we definitely ... get to September as quick as you can, get reinforcements."

Liriano gave up three runs (one unearned) in six innings Friday in his first Toronto start. He allowed seven hits and walked two in a no-decision. The Blue Jays won 4-3 with Devon Travis hitting a pair of home runs.

While Sanchez is difficult to score on, the Royals have had difficulty scoring upon anyone lately. They have not recorded more than three runs in nine straight games, which is a club record for one season. They went 11 straight games scoring three or fewer runs, but that was stretched over two seasons from Oct. 4, 1991-April 14, 1992.

"It's a broken record," Royals manager Ned Yost said of his club's no-nuke offense. "And we've got to face an All-Star pitcher (Saturday)."

The Royals scored 20 runs in their past nine games, while hitting .205 with a .253 on-base percentage and a .309 slugging percentage.

The Royals counter with left-hander Danny Duffy, who has also been dominant recently. He gave up one hit -- an eighth inning double to Desmond Jennings -- and struck out a club record 16 Rays on Monday in his previous start.

Duffy has won six straight decisions and leads the American League with 92 strikeouts since June 1, averaging 10.62 per nine innings in that span. He is 3-0 with a 3.79 ERA this season at Kauffman Stadium.

Duffy, however, does not have a good track record against the Blue Jays. He is 1-3 with a 6.97 ERA in five career appearances (four starts) against Toronto.

Preview: Marlins (58-51) at Rockies (54-55)

Game: 2
Venue: Coors Field
Date: August 06, 2016 8:10 PM EDT

DENVER -- Ichiro Suzuki made a cameo appearance Friday night, a three-pitch at-bat as a pinch-hitter that was preceded by a successful strategic move by Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss and ended with a strikeout, leaving Ichiro at 2,998 hits,

Manager Don Mattingly has not said when Ichiro might next start. Unlike Friday, the Rockies are starting right-handed pitchers on Saturday night (Chad Bettis) and Sunday afternoon (Jon Gray).

Mattingly sent Ichiro up to pinch hit with one out in the seventh Friday and right-hander Scott Oberg on the mound. Weiss countered with left-hander Boone Logan, who had limited left-handed hitters to an average of .135 (10-for-74) with 26 strikeouts.

Ichiro took a first-pitch strike, fouled off the third and took the third for strike three. Since his last hit July 28, Ichiro is 0-for-11 in seven games that include one start and he is 8-for-35 (.229) since the All-Star break.

In a pregame interview with the Marlins' beat writers, Ichiro admitted this slow climb to 3,000 hits has been unlike anything he has experienced in a professional career that began in 1992.

"I feel pressure every time I get up to the plate," Ichiro said through an interpreter. "But there are different types of pressure. This is a different type of pressure. This experience, I'll never be able to get this experience again. The fans that cheer me on, I feel obviously I want to get a hit. When I don't, I feel bad that I wasn't able to do it in front of them."

While Ichiro waits for the two grand moments that will make him the 30th player in major league history to scale the 3,000-hit summit, Andrew Cashner will make his second start for the Marlins since being acquired from San Diego. He's 4-7 with a 4.54 ERA overall. In his Marlins debut Sunday, Cashner was not involved in the decision after pitching six innings against St. Louis and allowing four hits and two runs, one earned, with no walks and two strikeouts. The Marlins won 5-4.

Bettis is 9-6 with a 5.16 ERA. On Sunday at New York, he allowed three runs and five hits in six innings with two walks and a season-high-tying eight strikeouts. Bettis was in line for the win since the Rockies scored once in the seventh to go ahead 4-3, but in the bottom of the inning, Logan gave up a three-run homer to Neil Walker that gave the Mets a 4-3 win.

Bettis, who will be making his first start against the Marlins, is 3-0 with a 3.09 ERA in his past five starts.

The Rockies have lost two straight games to fall to 2-2 on their current eight-game homestand. The Dodgers behind Kenta Maeda beat them 4-2 on Thursday. On Friday, the Rockies scored three runs in the eighth to go ahead 3-1, only to have the Marlins rough up closer Carlos Estevez for four runs in the ninth to win 5-3.

"Late losses are always frustrating," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "We'll bounce back tomorrow, win a game tomorrow."

Preview: Brewers (48-59) at Diamondbacks (44-65)

Game: 2
Venue: Chase Field
Date: August 06, 2016 8:10 PM EDT

PHOENIX -- Pardon the Milwaukee Brewers if they believe Yasmany Tomas' next trip will include a ticker-tape parade or a stop in Cooperstown.

Tomas continued to make the Brewers his personal cerveceros in Arizona's 2-1, 11-inning victory at Chase Field on Friday, hitting a pair of bases-empty homers that allowed the Diamondbacks to take the game that far.

Tomas pulled a changeup for a homer in the second inning and hit a fastball over the fence in right field for his second multiple-homer game against the Brewers in five games this season.

He leads the major leagues with six multiple-homer games (Baltimore's Mark Trumbo, a former Diamondback, has five) and he is 8-for-21 with two doubles, four homers and 10 RBIs in the season series that will continue with the second game of a three-game set in Chase Field on Saturday.

Big things were expected when Tomas signed a six-year, $68.5 million contract before the 2015 season, and he appears to be turning the corner at the plate.

"We believe he is starting to figure it out," Arizona manager Chip Hale said.

Tomas, 24, hit .273 with nine homers and 43 RBIs in his rookie season, and he was mostly a platoon player the final six weeks of the season.

"I'm working really hard to have good pitch selection," Tomas said through interpreter Ariel Prieto.

Arizona will start left-hander Patrick Corbin (4-10) against Matt Garza (2-4) in the first of the D-backs' two chances to win their fourth home series of the season. They are 18-38 at home.

Corbin and Garza faced each other July 26, but never had a decision when the Brewers pulled out a 7-4 victory with three runs in the eighth inning. Both have had success in the matchup. Corbin is 2-2 with a 2.88 ERA in nine appearances against Milwaukee and Garza is 5-2 with a 2.88 ERA in nine appearances against Arizona.

The D-backs are 18-38 at home and the Brewers are 18-34 on the road this season, winning two of their 17 series. They have lost 11 and split four.

Like Tomas, Milwaukee outfielder Hernan Perez continued to swing the bat well against Arizona. Perez singled and scored and is 6-for-18 with a homer, two RBIs and three stolen bases in five games against the Diamondbacks.

Milwaukee shortstop Orlando Arcia, considered one of the top prospects in the game when he was promoted from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Tuesday, had his first hit Friday, an RBI single on a high changeup that drove in Perez to tie the game at 1 in the fourth inning.

Arcia has started all three games since his addition, and that is likely to continue as the Brewers expose him to the highest level. Arcia committed a fielding error with runners on first and second and one out in the 11th inning Friday, when he took a ball behind second base and attempted to flip back to the bag instead of throwing to first base for the out. Welington Castillo walked one batter later to force in the winning run.

"He's certainly going to be our primary shortstop," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "We're looking forward to seeing him play. He's ready for the big leagues. There is a learning curve. He will at times feel like he is seeing things that he has never seen before."

Preview: Phillies (51-60) at Padres (47-62)

Game: 2
Venue: PETCO Park
Date: August 06, 2016 8:40 PM EDT

SAN DIEGO -- Although Andy Green has been a major league manager only 109 games, he knows something about how special a major league debut is.

"It's a very exciting day for everyone, teammates as well as the player," said Green, who has had seven Padres make their major league debuts this season.

Saturday night at Petco Park, however, Green will be in the other dugout as one of Philadelphia's top prospects makes his major league debut for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Right-handed pitcher Jake Thompson, who is considered among the top three prospects in the Phillies' system, officially joined Philadelphia Thursday and was immediately designated to start Saturday's game by manager Pete Mackanin.

"We excited to see him here," Mackanin said of the 22-year-old, 6-foot-4, 225-pound Thompson, who many saw as the Phillies' key acquisition on July 31, 2015, in the five-for-two trade that sent pitcher Cole Hamels to the Texas Rangers.

Thompson joins the Phillies on a hit streak. He is 8-0 over his last 11 starts with Triple-A Lehigh Valley with a 1.21 earned run average over 74 1/3 innings pitched.

Thompson has an overall record of 11-5 this season with a 2.50 earned run average in 21 starts at Triple-A.

Originally signed as a second-round pick by the Detroit Tigers in 2012, Thompson has twice been the top prospect in a trade made by a contending team. The Tigers traded Thompson to the Rangers in 2014 for reliever Joakim Soria.

Opposing Thompson for the Padres Saturday night will be right-hander Paul Clemens, who is 0-2 with the Padres with a 3.46 earned run average in six appearances since being claimed on waivers from the Miami Marlins on June 28.

Clemens moved permanently into the rotation last Sunday to fill the spot vacated when Andrew Cashner was traded to the Marlins.

"We like his ceiling," Green said of the 28-year-old Clemens. "His breaking ball plays in the major leagues. He can have success with what he has if he learns how to use it. Thus far, he hasn't been consistent. That's the next step.

"From what we've seen in bullpens and at moments when he's pitched for us, his stuff plays. This is an opportunity. Like a lot of guys we have, this is an opportunity for Paul to show what he can do to stick up here."

In his start last Sunday, Clemens allowed two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. He issued one walk and had five strikeouts. He also gave up his third homer in a total of 13 innings for the Padres. The other two homers came during his first start on July 20 in a spot start in the second game of a doubleheader in St. Louis.

All five runs allowed by Clemens in his first two starts have come on home runs.

"I'm not happy with that," said Clemens. "Without the home runs, I've had pretty good outings. I can't make good pitches and then make a bad pitch that burns me. You can't be successful that way."

Preview: Angels (49-60) at Mariners (55-53)

Game: 2
Venue: Safeco Field
Date: August 06, 2016 9:10 PM EDT

SEATTLE -- After an inconsistent first two years in and out of Seattle's rotation, 24-year-old top prospect Taijuan Walker was finally being relied upon to be a big part of the Mariners' success this season.

Because of a nagging foot injury, Walker has been unable to live up to expectations again.

Walker returns from a month-long stint on the disabled list hoping to pitch through the pain and get through another frustrating season. He's due back on the mound Saturday night, when the Mariners host a Los Angeles Angels team that knows all about injured starting pitchers.

Angels starter Tyler Skaggs returned from Tommy John surgery late last month and has already put together two scoreless outings in his first action since July 2014. Skaggs (1-0) brings a scoreless streak of 18 1/3 innings, dating back to the 2014 season, into Saturday's start.

The Angels could use his arm in the rotation as they try to bounce back from losing consecutive games for the first time since a three-game sweep in Houston from July 22-24. The Angels have provided plenty of offense in recent games, but haven't had the pitching to back it up.

Veteran Tim Lincecum was the latest starter to struggle as he gave up six first-inning runs in a 6-4 loss to the Mariners on Friday night.

"It seemed to happen pretty fast," Lincecum said.

Seattle (55-53) has its own set of problems and hopes that some rotation stability will be enough to get the Mariners back into the postseason hunt. Walker (4-7) is the latest pitcher to return to a rotation that has already had 11 different starters this season.

Ace Felix Hernandez returned from the disabled list two weeks ago but has struggled to find consistency. He turned in his best outing Friday night, when he bounced back from a rough first inning to pitch eight strong innings.

That game saw catcher Mike Zunino hit his sixth home run in only 41 at-bats since being recalled from Triple-A, where he'd been working on his swing after two disappointing seasons as the Mariners' everyday catcher.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Saturday, August 6, 2016, Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews

I was going to ask this question: Has a guy ever begun his season as a starting pitcher, spent at least 65 percent of the year in the rotation, then was moved to the bullpen and still won the Cy Young Award? I knew that Blue Jays ace Aaron Sanchez was set to start Saturday and that it might be his last start of the year as the Jays had said they were sending him to the bullpen after one or two more starts even though Sanchez is 11-1 with an AL-best 2.71 ERA. The team wanted to save innings on his arm as Sanchez is at 139.1 and his previous high was 133.1, spread out over the minors and majors in 2014. When the Jays acquired Francisco Liriano from Pittsburgh on Monday, the idea was he would replace Sanchez in the rotation. But the team, smartly I think, reversed course on Thursday night and said Sanchez would stay a starter but that the Jays would go to a six-man rotation. Apparently all the other starters signed off on this, but it will leave the Jays a position player short on the bench.

Cubs at A's (+193, 8)

A 4:05 p.m. ET first pitch. A lot of experts believe the Cubs will eventually make Oakland GM Billy Beane an offer he can't refuse for ace Sonny Gray, perhaps as soon as this offseason. And it's Gray who starts this interleague game, with the Cubs adding the designated hitter. Gray (5-10, 5.84) continued his 2016 struggles on Sunday in Cleveland as he allowed seven runs and eight hits over 3.1 innings in a blowout loss. It was the third time in July that Gray allowed seven runs and he had a 7.79 ERA in the month. He has never faced the Cubs. Dexter Fowler has faced him, though, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Ben Zobrist is 2-for-5 with two doubles. Cubs ace Jake Arrieta (12-5, 2.75) won't get to bat, which won't make him happy because he's good at the plate. Chicago has lost his past five, although Arrieta allowed only two hits and two runs over seven innings last time out vs. Seattle. Oakland's Khris Davis is 4-for-19 off him with two doubles. Billy Butler is 3-for-7.

Key trends: The Cubs are 10-1 in Arrieta's past 11 vs. teams with a losing record. The A's are 2-5 in Gray's past seven at home. The "over/under" is 9-0-2 in Arrieta's past 11 on the road. The over is 7-1 in Gray's past eight at home.

Early lean: Cubs and over.

Twins at Rays (-160, 7.5)

This has been a totally lost season for the Twins, but fans have some reason to check in on this game as the team's top pitching prospect, Jose Berrios, is on the mound. Berrios (2-1, 8.57) makes his sixth big-league start of the year and comes off his best one in beating the Indians and allowing three runs and five hits over six innings. The Twins have some really good young hitters, but if they are going to contend in the AL Central next year they need to find pitching, and perhaps Berrios will be a solution. He hasn't faced the Rays. Tampa held on to ace Chris Archer (5-15, 4.38) at Monday's trade deadline but might deal him this offseason. If you would have offered me a bet where you said Archer would lead the AL in losses in 2016, I would have emptied my bank account to wager against that. But there he is. Archer does have three straight quality starts, and his ERA isn't that ghastly, but the Rays rarely score for him. He hasn't faced the Twins this year. Brian Dozier is 1-for-14 off him career. Joe Mauer is 3-for-9.

Key trends: The Rays are 0-7 in Archer's past seven at home. The under is 9-1 in his past 10 there.

Early lean: Rays and under.

Giants at Nationals (-210, 8)

This game is nationally televised on the MLB Network and should have live betting at sportsbooks. The Nationals hosed us a spectacular pitching matchup on Sunday between Cy Young contenders Stephen Strasburg and Madison Bumgarner. Originally Strasburg was set for Sunday, but the team opted to bump everyone up a day, have them pitch on normal rest and skip over the fifth starter's spot this time around. So it's Strasburg (15-1, 2.63) here, and I don't think there's a question he's the Cy favorite -- and was my pick to win at the All-Star break. He beat the Diamondbacks last time out, allowing one run and three hits over six innings. That was his first August start after Strasburg was named NL Pitcher of the Month for July. He missed the Giants in the teams' recent series. Buster Posey hits him well, going 7-for-18 with two doubles. San Francisco's Matt Cain (3-6, 5.53) was chosen over Jake Peavy to keep the No. 5 spot in the rotation after the Giants got Matt Moore from Tampa Bay on Monday. Cain threw five no-hit innings vs. the Nationals last Sunday.

Key trends: The Giants are 0-4 in Cain's past four road starts vs. teams with a winning record. The Nats are 10-1 in Strasburg's past 11 vs. teams with a winning record. The over is 14-3 in Strasburg's past 17 overall.

Early lean: That over trend on Strasburg surprises me. Go under and Nats.

Reds at Pirates (-134, 8.5)

Like with the Twins, it has been a lost season for the rebuilding Reds, but they could get one good thing out of it heading into 2017 and that's Homer Bailey. The team gave him a massive extension in February 2014 after two very good seasons. But then Bailey's 2014 season ended in August due to injury and he lasted only two starts in 2015 before succumbing to Tommy John surgery. So it was good to see Bailey back on the mound for the first time Sunday, and he beat the Padres, allowing two runs and four hits over 5.2 innings. Bailey retired 14 in a row at one point and was hitting 95 mph on the gun occasionally. The Pirates go with Ivan Nova (7-6, 4.90) in his Pittsburgh debut. He was acquired Monday from the Yankees for a couple of players to be named later. Nova wasn't good in his final Yankees start, allowing five runs over 4.1 innings against Tampa Bay. A couple of Reds have faced him in their careers. Brandon Phillips is 2-for-6. Joey Votto is 1-for-5 with a homer.

Key trends: The Reds are 0-7 in Bailey's past seven vs. the NL Central. The under is 6-0 in his past six on the road. Cincinnati is 0-6 in Bailey's past six vs. Pittsburgh.

Early lean: Pirates and under.

Blue Jays at Royals (+110, 7.5)

Sanchez took a no-decision last time out against Baltimore, allowing two runs and four hits over seven innings, his third straight outing going at least seven. I'm wondering if the Jays will even allow him to go longer than six innings from here on out. Sanchez beat Kansas City on July 4, allowing one run and three hits over eight innings. Kendrys Morales is 1-for-4 off him with a solo homer. Kansas City lefty Danny Duffy (7-1, 2.98) comes off perhaps the greatest regular-season start in franchise history. He threw eight shutout innings in Tampa Bay on Monday and allowed just one hit (in the eighth) and struck out a franchise-record 16. Duffy induced 35 swing-and-misses, tied with Clayton Kershaw (in 2015) for the most in a game in the past 15 seasons. Duffy's game score of 95 was a franchise record for a nine-inning game. Duffy didn't face Toronto in the earlier series. Jose Bautista is 4-for-8 off him with two RBIs. Josh Donaldson is 2-for-7 with a homer.

Key trends: The Jays are 7-3 in Sanchez's past 10 on the road. The Royals are 7-1 in Duffy's past eight at home vs. teams with a winning record. The under is 4-1 in Sanchez's past five on the road. The under is 8-2 in Duffy's past 10 vs. the AL East.

Early lean: Royals -- Duffy has been outstanding for a while -- and under.

'Big Home Favorites August/September'

August is upon the baseball season which means MLB clubs in the playoff hunt are giving their all and teams outside the October picture are planning holiday's. That disparity in motivation can lead to some big odds baseball bettors must deal with.

On the surface, it may seem like easy money when you see a home winning team with a great pitcher hosting a mediocre team. However, what seems like a sure thing seldom is in baseball. The very best teams clock in with a 60% winning percentage, the worst teams are usually good for a win 40% of the time so winning 2 out 3 doesn't cut it with heavy juice.

Over the past five seasons (2011-2015) home favorites priced -$2.40 or more during August/September were 95-35 for a 73.3% winning clip. But, the heavy chalk resulted in +$401 at the betting window. Not exactly a good return on investment.

Putting down your hard-earned money on these humungous home favorites when hosting a division opponent down the stretch would have left you in a -$924 hole despite the teams winning at a 68.7% clip (55-25).

Something to keep in mind as the season moves along.

'There’s No Place Like Home'

When home cookin' baseball betting trends point in one direction the baseball handicapping industry takes notice. And, that's the case Saturday when Washington Nationals take on San Francisco Giants at Nationals Park.

Stephen Strasburg presently among the front-runners for the NL Cy Young award with 15 wins in 20 assignments gets the call for Washington. The Nationals have been virtually unbeatable as home favorites with their ace hurler. In his eleven home starts this year the Nationals are 10-1 and the club have emerged victorious in 17 of his last 19 games as chalk in front of the home audience.

On the other side, Giants have not done well in an opposing park handing the ball to Matt Cain. In his four starts the result has been one win, four losses. That sub-par performance is not limited to this season, the Giants are 1-7 in his last 8 tossing in unfriendly territory.

No surprise to see the Nationals opening -$2.50 moneyline home favorite.

For those inclined to lay the juice, Strasburg has been Washington's 'August Guy'. In his last 12 as a home favorite during said month the Nationals are a sparkling 11-1. Additionally, Nats have won each of Starsburg's three career home starts vs San Francisco.

Saturday’s 6-pack

— I wish I was clever enough to make this up: a kayak in the Olympics capsized after hitting a submerged sofa that was hidden underwater.

— Cardinals went 14-10 while Matt Carpenter was on DL; they used six leadoff hitters in those 24 games.

— NFL Network will show all 65 preseason games (11 live) starting next week.

— Houston 5, Texas 0– Rangers are now 9-2 vs Houston this year, still lead Astros by 5.5 games in AL West.

— Catcher in Indians’ farm system (Class A level) has a 47-game hitting streak going.

— If you bet over in Angels-Mariners last nite, you won before the first inning ended– it was 6-3 Seattle after the first inning.
