The Boston Red Sox own the best bullpen according to ERA in the major leagues, but it wasn't much help in a loss on Friday. The Red Sox will try to bounce back and push their lead in the American League East when they visit the New York Yankees again on Saturday afternoon.

Boston held a 3-0 lead going into the eighth inning in Friday's series opener before Addison Reed, the latest addition to the relief corps, was charged with four runs without recording an out as the Red Sox bullpen had a 19-inning scoreless streak come to an end and the team went on to suffer a 5-4 loss. Boston's lead over the Yankees in the American League East slimmed to 3 1/2 games with the setback, which ended an eight-game winning streak. The Yankees are pulling out of a funk with wins in four of their last six games and will get plenty of head-to-head chances to make up ground in the East with nine more games against the Red Sox through the first weekend in September. New York will try to knock another game off the deficit on Saturday behind Luis Severino while Boston counters with lefty Drew Pomeranz.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1, NESN (Boston), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Drew Pomeranz (11-4, 3.36 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Luis Severino (9-4, 2.91)

Pomeranz allowed one or no earned runs in six of his last 10 starts and breezed past the Chicago White Sox last Saturday while yielding one run and striking out eight in 6 1/3 innings. The Ole Miss product completed seven innings just once this season but went at least six frames in six of his last seven turns. Pomeranz's worst outing since mid-June came at home against New York on July 14, when he was reached for four runs and six hits in six innings without factoring in the decision.

Severino has been on a roll since the All-Star break, surrendering one or no earned runs in each of his last five starts. The Dominican Republic native struck out at least eight in each of his last three starts and earned the win in four straight. The lone no-decision in the last five outings came at Boston on July 15, when he scattered one run and four hits over seven frames but could not get any early support in a game the Yankees went on to win 4-1.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Yankees placed LHP CC Sabathia (right knee inflammation) on the 10-day DL on Friday and recalled LHP Jordan Montgomery, who is expected to start on Sunday.

2. Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia (knee) sat out his second straight game and could be headed for another DL stint.

3. Boston LF Andrew Benintendi homered among two hits on Friday and is 10-for-18 over the last five games.

GAME: Cleveland Indians (60-52) at Tampa Bay Rays (59-57)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, August 12 - 6:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida

Preview: Indians at Rays
Gracenote
Aug 12, 2017

The Tampa Bay Rays appeared ready to make a strong postseason push after beginning August with three straight wins over American League-best Houston, but their fortunes have instead nosedived since returning home. Already guaranteed a losing record on their nine-game homestand, the Rays attempt to break out of their offensive malaise Saturday when they host the third of four games against the Cleveland Indians.

Tampa Bay fell to 2-5 since returning from Houston following Friday's 5-0 setback and has been shut out four times during the homestand while scoring no more than four runs in any game. The Rays also surrendered their slim advantage over Seattle and Minnesota for the second and final wild-card spot in the AL, falling one-half game behind them. Edwin Encarnacion broke open a pitchers' duel in a five-run fifth inning with a solo shot and Carlos Carrasco took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Friday as Cleveland halted a stretch in which it had lost four of five. Jay Bruce went 2-for-4 in his first start since arriving in a trade Thursday from the New York Mets for the Indians, who maintained their 3 1/2-game lead over the Twins in the AL Central.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, STO (Cleveland), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Mike Clevinger (5-4, 4.00 ERA) vs. Rays RH Chris Archer (8-6, 3.80)

Clevinger returns to the rotation after a brief spell in the bullpen and will make his first start since July 31 in Boston, which tagged him for five runs on seven hits and four walks over three innings in a loss. The 26-year-old Florida native began July by allowing a total of one earned run and eight hits over his first 18 innings before surrendering 10 earned runs and 16 hits across his final 7 1/3 frames of the month. Clevinger retired the only batter he faced on May 16 in his only career appearance versus the Rays.

Archer was denied a chance for a second straight win and settled for a no-decision Sunday against Milwaukee despite yielding only a solo home run among the three hits he allowed in six frames. The outing marked a personal-best 15th straight turn in which the two-time All-Star was able to log six innings and the 11th time over that stretch he recorded a quality start. Encarnacion is 8-for-50 with three homers versus Archer, who took the loss in Cleveland on May 15 after getting tagged for six earned runs over five frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Indians have scored 418 runs in their 61 wins (6.9 per game) but only 124 runs in their 52 losses (2.4).

2. Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria left Friday's contest in the sixth inning with a left thumb contusion.

3. Cleveland 2B Jason Kipnis, who left Thursday night's game early with a tight hamstring, is expected to test it again prior to the start of Saturday's contest.

Gracenote
Aug 12, 2017

The Minnesota Twins are determined to stay in the race in the American League Central and are on a roll with wins in six straight. The Twins will try to keep the pressure on the first-place Cleveland Indians and keep the Tigers thinking about the future when they visit Detroit for the second of a three-game series on Saturday.

Minnesota climbed two games over .500 (58-56) with Friday's 9-4 win in the series opener and stayed within 3 1/2 games of the first-place Indians while remaining in the thick of the AL wild card race. The Twins are allowing an average of 3.2 runs during the winning streak and leaned heavily in the series opener on the bullpen, which responded by allowing one run and four hits in 4 1/3 innings in relief of ineffective starter Kyle Gibson. Minnesota will try to give the relief corps a little more rest on Saturday, when Jose Berrios takes the mound opposite Tigers veteran Jordan Zimmermann. Detroit (52-63) dropped 11 games under .500 with Friday's setback and has lost six of its last seven while allowing an average of seven runs in those losses.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Jose Berrios (10-5, 3.86 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Jordan Zimmermann (7-9, 5.27)

Berrios wasn't particularly sharp in his last outing but still managed to earn the win despite allowing five runs and six hits in five innings against Texas. The 23-year-old Puerto Rico native is trying to find some consistency in the second half and held San Diego to one run over seven innings in his previous turn. Berrios made two starts against Detroit last season and was ripped for a total of 13 runs - 12 earned - and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Zimmermann went seven innings in each of his last three starts but took the loss last time out while surrendering three runs and five hits at Pittsburgh. The Wisconsin native issued three walks against the Pirates after not yielding a free pass in either of his previous two turns. Zimmermann was not nearly as strong at Minnesota on July 22, when he was ripped for five runs on nine hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler was reportedly claimed off revocable waivers but is unlikely to be dealt.

2. Minnesota SS Jorge Polanco recorded multiple hits in each of the last five games and is 12-for-19 in that span.

3. Detroit 3B Nick Castellanos is 7-for-13 in the last three games after going 2-for-25 over the previous seven.

The San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals renew acquaintances on Saturday for the first time since reliever Hunter Strickland drilled superstar Bryce Harper in the hip with a 98-mph fastball that sparked a brawl in late May. While both insist that they've moved on from the skirmish, there's a chance the two will square off in a more traditional sense in Saturday's opener of a rain-delayed three-game series at Nationals Park, which will conclude with a doubleheader Sunday after Friday's game was postponed.

Harper ripped an RBI double in Thursday's 3-2 victory over Miami, giving Washington four wins in its last five games and pushing its lead in the National League East to a staggering season-high 15 games over the second-place Marlins - a number that fell to 14 1/2 when Miami won on Friday. The 2015 NL MVP is 10-for-28 with two homers, seven RBIs and six runs scored in his last seven contests, but went 0-for-8 with four strikeouts during Washington's three-game sweep of San Francisco. Giants outfielder Jarrett Parker didn't play in that series, but enters Friday's tilt with eight RBIs during his six-game hitting streak. The 28-year-old Virginia native had a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning on Wednesday, leading San Francisco to its fourth win in five outings with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Chris Stratton (0-2, 6.63 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Edwin Jackson (2-2, 4.34)

Stratton was reinstated from the disabled list and notched his second straight no-decision while making his second career major league start on Saturday against Arizona. The 26-year-old, who replaced veteran Matt Cain in the rotation, allowed three runs on five hits in as many innings. Stratton saw his pitch count elevate due in large part to the four walks he surrendered, bringing his total to 10 in his last three outings.

Jackson got the nod last Saturday in place of Gio Gonzalez (paternity list), overcoming a four-run first inning to work four more clean frames in a 7-4 setback at the Chicago Cubs. "I couldn’t get the ball down in the first inning. I had a couple balls hit that were up in the zone," the 33-year-old said. Jackson fell to 2-2 with a 3.75 ERA in his last four starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington RHP Ryan Madson has been downright impressive since being acquired from Oakland, scattering four hits and recording 12 strikeouts over eight scoreless innings.

2. San Francisco relievers surrendered two earned runs in their last 22 2/3 innings.

3. Seventeen of Nationals CF Brian Goodwin's 24 hits since July 17 have gone for extra bases.

GAME: New York Mets (51-61) at Philadelphia Phillies (42-70)

Since trading away their top power hitter the New York Mets have had an offensive breakthrough, something they will try to maintain Saturday in the third of four games at the Philadelphia Phillies. Right fielder Jay Bruce, who led the Mets with 29 home runs, was shipped to Cleveland earlier in the week as New York struggled for consistent offense while wrapping up a homestand, but the club has erupted for 17 runs while taking the first two games in Philadelphia.

Yoenis Cespedes drove in four runs, Michael Conforto homered for the fourth time in six games and rookie shortstop Amed Rosario had his first career blast to break a tie in the ninth inning and lift the Mets to a 7-6 win Friday. New York improved to 33-15 at Citizens Bank Park since the start of the 2015 season, which includes wins in all five meetings at Philadelphia this year. Phillies prospect Rhys Hoskins is 0-for-6 with three strikeouts and two walks in two games since being called up from the minors, while Mets prospect Dominic Smith was 1-for-3 in his major-league debut Friday. Aaron Nola has found a nice groove for Philadelphia and will get the start Saturday opposite left-hander Steven Matz.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, WPIX (New York), NBC 10 (Philadelphia)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets LH Steven Matz (2-5, 5.77 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Aaron Nola (8-7, 3.12)

Matz's slump continued in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday, when he was reached for five runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. That performance left the 26-year-old at 0-4 with an ERA of 11.03 over a span of six starts, all of which came after he spun seven scoreless frames in back-to-back road outings. While he has faced other National League East foes Atlanta, Miami and Washington a combined 15 times, Matz has never pitched against the Phillies.

Nola is 5-2 with a 1.76 ERA over his last nine starts, allowing two runs or fewer each time. He has recorded at least seven strikeouts in eight of those nine outings, including seven more over as many frames in a no-decision at Colorado on Sunday. The 24-year-old has given up 10 runs in nine innings over two career meetings with the Mets.

WALK-OFFS

1. Phillies CF Odubel Herrera finished 2-for-4 on Friday and has hit safely in a career-high 14 straight games.

2. Philadelphia RH Vince Velasquez (finger) was placed on the 10-day disabled list and IF/OF Ty Kelly was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

3. Cespedes has nine home runs in 17 career games at Citizens Bank Park.

Aug 12, 2017

The Milwaukee Brewers are in full free-fall mode and look to halt a six-game losing streak when they host the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game set. Milwaukee fell behind by eight runs in Friday's series opener before suffering an 11-10 loss to drop to .500 on the campaign.

Milwaukee has lost 18 of its last 25 games, and its slump has seen it drop to three games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the four-team National League Central race. Eric Thames continued his domination of the Reds as he smacked his 26th homer of the season in the opener - nine of which have come against Cincinnati. Eugenio Suarez reached base five times (three singles, two walks) on Friday while Zack Cozart (3-for-5, homer, walk) and Joey Votto (one hit, three walks) each reached base four times. Votto is 23-for-49 with four homers, 14 RBIs and 19 walks during his 16-game hitting streak.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Scott Feldman (7-7, 4.34 ERA) vs. Brewers LH Brent Suter (2-2, 3.31)

Feldman is coming off the disabled list to make his first start since injuring his right knee on July 17. The 34-year-old, who is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in two starts versus Milwaukee this season, departed the mid-July contest against Washington after one inning due to soreness and is thrilled to be back on the mound. "It's been pretty annoying being on the DL, as is usually the case. I'm just happy to get back out there," Feldman, who has a career record of 2-3 with a 4.06 ERA in six outings against the Brewers, told reporters.

Suter settled for a no-decision against Minnesota in his last start, when he gave up three runs and five hits over four innings. The 27-year-old is 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in two shaky starts after being superb last month, when he went 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in five turns. Suter is making his first career start versus the Reds but has worked 4 1/3 scoreless innings in four relief appearances against them.

WALK-OFFS

1. Milwaukee LF Ryan Braun went 2-for-5 in the opener for his sixth straight multi-hit performance and is 14-for-26 during that stretch.

2. Cincinnati CF Billy Hamilton stole three bases in the opener and is two shy of his fourth straight 50-steal season.

3. Thames recorded three hits on Friday to break out of a 2-for-23 funk.

GAME: Kansas City Royals (57-57) at Chicago White Sox (44-68)

Preview: Royals at White Sox
Gracenote
Aug 12, 2017

James Shields helped the Kansas City Royals reach the World Series in 2014, but now he hopes to help prevent them from getting back to the playoffs. Shields takes the mound for the Chicago White Sox on Saturday as they aim for a second straight win over the slumping Royals.

The Royals were within 1 1/2 games of the American League Central lead as recently as July 26, but they’ve slipped five games back of Cleveland after dropping five straight and 10 of their last 12. Kansas City’s normally reliable bullpen has faltered of late and has regularly been hit hard during the five-game skid. The last-place White Sox have won four straight after a 6-3 win in Friday’s series opener. Chicago is doing it with an influx of young talent, as outfielder Nicky Delmonico has reached base in his first 10 major-league games and fellow rookie Yoan Moncada is batting .344 over his last eight games.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Ian Kennedy (4-8, 4.83 ERA) vs. White Sox RH James Shields (2-4, 6.03)

After a string of five quality starts in six outings, Kennedy has struggled his last two times out. The 32-year-old was tagged for seven runs (six earned) in six innings in a loss to St. Louis on Monday after giving up four runs in four-plus innings of a loss at Baltimore six days earlier. Kennedy is 2-2 with a 4.70 ERA in seven starts against the White Sox, and he has surrendered 11 runs (nine earned) in 8 1/3 innings over two meetings this season.

Shields is winless in six starts since June 29, posting an 8.13 ERA over that stretch. The 35-year-old pitched better last time out, allowing four runs (three earned) over six innings in a 4-1 loss at Boston. GAME: Colorado Rockies (65-49) at Miami Marlins (53-60)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, August 12 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Rockies at Marlins
Gracenote
Aug 12, 2017

Giancarlo Stanton may not be able to control what happens to the Miami Marlins off the field, but the four-time All-Star is doing everything in his power to make sure they are in good hands on it. The major-league leader in home runs is enjoying one of the best power-hitting stretches baseball has seen in recent years and attempts to keep it up Saturday when the Marlins host the second of three games against the Colorado Rockies.

Reports surfaced prior to Friday's series opener that team owner Jeffrey Loria agreed to sell the Marlins to a group led by New York businessman Bruce Sherman and 14-time All-Star Derek Jeter for $1.2 billion. Stanton became the second player in club history to hit at least 40 homers in a season hours later when he belted his 19th home run over his last 31 games, sparking a rally for the Marlins en route to a 6-3 victory. Colorado remains firmly entrenched as one of the National League's two wild-card teams, holding a one-game lead over Arizona and a 5 1/2-game edge over St. Louis following Friday's defeat. The Rockies will need to reverse recent history at some point this weekend in order to maintain their cushion, however, as their loss in the opener dropped them to 7-15 against the Marlins since 2014, including 3-10 in Miami.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet - Rocky Mountain (Colorado), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Jeff Hoffman (6-3, 5.03 ERA) vs. Marlins LH Justin Nicolino (0-1, 5.31)

Hoffman turned in his second strong outing after an extended rough stretch in a no-decision Sunday against Philadelphia, permitting one run on four hits while fanning eight in seven frames. The East Carolina alum has a 2.08 ERA in two August starts after posting an 8.00 ERA and allowing opponents to bat .324 against him in five July turns. Hoffman is 4-1 with a 3.65 ERA in six road outings this season entering his first career start against the Marlins.

Nicolino will get another chance to prove he belongs in the majors Saturday, when he is expected to take the mound after dominating at Triple-A New Orleans over the last month. The 25-year-old was optioned on July 1 after going 0-1 with a 4.95 ERA as a starter for Miami, but then went 4-2 with a 1.99 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in seven outings with the Zephyrs. Nicolino did not factor into the decision in any of his five appearances (four starts) prior to his demotion at Marlins Park, where he has posted a 3.86 ERA this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Stanton, who has homered in four of his last five games, needs two more to tie the team record held by Gary Sheffield in 1996 (42).

2. After winning 24 of their first 34 away from Colorado, the Rockies are 6-19 on the road since.

3. Colorado 3B Nolan Arenado clubbed a two-run homer Friday to give him a major-league best 100 RBIs for the third straight season.

PREDICTION: Rockies 6, Marlins 4
