It’s not hard to make a case for betting ON Aaron Nola these days. The Phillies emerging young ace has thrown one gem after the next for the better part of the last two months, allowing two runs or less in each of his last nine trips to the hill. Nola has notched 36 strikeouts in just 32 innings of work in five starts since the All Star Break, eating up innings while allowing just seven runs during that entire span. The last place Phillies are 6-3 in Nola’s last nine starts and they combined to score only four runs in those three losses. But this Philadelphia lineup is primed to produce more than one or two runs tonight against struggling Steven Matz.

Matz isn’t ‘right’; plain and simple. The Mets are 3-8 in his 11 starts this season. His last six starts, dating back since his last outing before the All Star Break, have been nothing short of awful. The post All Star Break ERA is 11.17. Matz has allowed 39 hits in just 19.1 innings over that five start span; with opponents hitting .433 against him, truly ugly numbers. And with the Mets struggling overall: 5-10 in their last 15 games, completely falling out of contention for a Wild Card spot, I’m not expecting any significant mid-August turnaround for a losing squad simply playing out the string. Chalk worth laying here! Take the Phillies!
