Preview: Indians at Blue Jays

Current Conditions - Toronto

P/SUNNY 82 °F
Wind: W 24
5-Day Forecast GAME: Cleveland Indians (49-30) at Toronto Blue Jays (43-39)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 1:07 PM EST
WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

It took the longest game in the majors this season for the Cleveland Indians to set a record for the longest winning streak in franchise history. The Indians have won 14 consecutive games following Friday's 2-1 victory in 19 innings and will look to make it three straight against the host Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon.

"I guess if you're going to set a record, you might as well do it the hard way," said Cleveland pitcher Trevor Bauer, who earned the victory with five innings of relief. Bauer was scheduled to start Saturday's game, but his unexpected stint out of the bullpen has the team scrambling for a starter. Toronto burned its bullpen to the point that a pair of infielders, Ryan Goins and Darwin Barney, were forced to pitch the 18th and 19th innings, with Barney surrendering Carlos Santana's winning homer. Held to a single run in each of the first two games of the series, the Blue Jays will send Marco Estrada to the mound Saturday.

TV: 1:07 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), Sportsnet, TVA (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians TBA vs. Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (5-3, 2.81)

Indians manager Terry Francona did not disclose the team's plans for Saturday's starter after using seven relievers on Friday. "We're working through that right now," Francona said after Friday's six-plus hour marathon. "We've got some things we've got to talk through." One option could be Ross Detwiler, who has made 76 major-league starts and has gone at least seven innings in his last two turns at Triple-A Columbus.

Estrada is riding a string of eight consecutive quality starts but has come up empty in his last two appearances, going six innings and permitting three runs in each. He has not allowed more than 12 hits in 12 straight outings, but he's been taken deep 11 times in that stretch - including at least once in each of his last five turns. Estrada pitched seven innings of two-run ball in his only career start versus Cleveland.

WALK-OFFS

1. Blue Jays DH Edwin Encarnacion and manager John Gibbons were ejected in the first inning while C Russell Martin was tossed in the 13th on Friday.

2. Indians 2B Jason Kipnis recorded five hits Friday to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

3. Blue Jays RF Jose Bautista is not expected back before the All-Star break.

Preview: Rangers at Twins

Weather information is currently unavailable. 5-Day Forecast
GAME: Texas Rangers (52-29) at Minnesota Twins (25-54)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

After being victimized by a pair of walk-off losses at Yankee Stadium, the Texas Rangers rebounded with a little late-inning magic of their own. Ian Desmond's homer to lead off the 10th inning was the difference in a 3-2 win Friday for Texas, which looks to make it two straight at the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.

"There's nothing wrong with a little adversity, especially to kind of see what we're made of," Desmond told reporters after the Rangers put the two walk-off defeats to the Yankees behind them. Texas owns the most wins in the majors (52) and is running away with the American League West. One of the reasons for the success is the Rangers' ability to win the tight games -- they improved to 18-6 in one-run contests following Friday's victory. While the Twins are at the opposite end of the spectrum with the worst record in baseball, Brian Dozier remains on a tear with a career-high 13-game hitting streak.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Chi Chi González (0-0, 9.00 ERA) vs. Twins RH Tyler Duffey (3-6, 5.59)

Gonzalez endured a rocky season debut against the New York Yankees on Monday but managed to come away with a no-decision despite giving up five runs on 10 hits over five innings. He had struggled at Triple-A Round Rock prior to his promotion, posting a 3-6 record and 5.04 ERA in 14 starts. The 24-year-old Gonzalez gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings versus Minnesota last year en route to a 4-6 mark and 3.90 ERA.

Duffey may have preserved his spot in the starting rotation with a masterful outing at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, striking out eight while yielding one run on two hits over a season-high eight innings. That ended an ugly seven-start run for Duffey, who had surrendered at least four earned runs in each of those turns. He is 1-3 with a 7.71 ERA while allowing nine of his 12 home runs in six home starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers RHP Yu Darvish will make a rehab start at Double-A Frisco.

2. Twins 3B Miguel Sano returned to the lineup for the first time since May 31 and went 0-for-3.

3. Desmond has three three-hit games in his last eight contests.

Preview: Brewers at Cardinals

Current Conditions - St. Louis

CLOUDS AND SUN 93 °F
Wind: WSW 8
5-Day Forecast GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (35-44) at St. Louis Cardinals (41-38)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 2:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The St. Louis Cardinals have halted a seven-game home losing streak and attempt to defeat visiting Milwaukee for the second straight day in Saturday's middle contest of a three-game set. St. Louis suffered through its longest home skid since 1983 before Matt Holliday delivered three RBIs in Friday's 7-1 victory.

The Cardinals have a solid chance to notch another victory as scheduled Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson is 0-5 with a 9.51 ERA in six career appearances (five starts) against St. Louis. Nelson is paired up against Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright, who is 12-8 with a 2.32 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in 32 career appearances (25 starts) against Milwaukee. Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun was hitless in four at-bats on Friday to end an 11-game hitting streak and he traditionally struggles against Wainwright -- .211 with two homers and 20 strikeouts in 71 career at-bats. Milwaukee has lost 11 of its last 16 games and stands just 13-24 on the road this season.

TV: 2:15 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (5-6, 3.60 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (6-5, 5.04)

Nelson suffered through a horrific June by going 0-3 with a 5.87 ERA and 1.91 WHIP in five starts. He has struggled on the road this season, compiling a 1-3 record and 5.66 ERA in seven away starts. Nelson has struggled with the St. Louis duo of Matt Carpenter (6-for-13, one homer) and Jhonny Peralta (5-for-13).

Wainwright was roughed up by Kansas City in his last turn when he gave up six runs and 10 hits in five innings. He has allowed five earned runs or more on four occasions and is saddled with an ERA that is well over his career mark of 3.10. Wainwright hasn't given up a homer in seven of his last eight outings, the exception being when he served up three against Washington on May 28.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Cardinals placed LHP Kevin Siegrist (mononucleosis) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled RHP Sam Tuivailala from Triple-A Memphis.

2. Milwaukee 1B Chris Carter belted a homer for Friday's lone run, marking his fourth straight 20-homer campaign.

3. St. Louis SS Aledmys Diaz (eye) went 2-for-5 with an RBI on Friday in his return after a three-game absence.

Preview: White Sox at Astros

Current Conditions - Houston

CLOUDY 93 °F
Wind: S 12
5-Day Forecast GAME: Chicago White Sox (40-40) at Houston Astros (43-37)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Left-hander Chris Sale goes for his major league-leading 14th victory when the visiting Chicago White Sox continue a three-game series against the Houston Astros on Saturday afternoon. The surging Astros extended their winning streak to four games with a 5-0 shutout of the White Sox in the opener of a 10-game homestand.

Sale has won his last four starts to move within one victory of his highest total since posting a career-high 17 wins in 2012. He dominated the Astros with a complete-game gem on May 19 to improve to 4-1 with a razor-thin 0.66 ERA in five starts against them. Houston, however, has won 11 of 12 games to move a season-high six games over .500 and climb back among the wild-card leaders. It was the second shutout loss in four games for Chicago, which has lost 30 of 47 games since starting the season 23-10.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Chris Sale (13-2, 2.79 ERA) vs. Astros RH Doug Fister (8-4, 3.36)

Sale rebounded from a bit of a rough patch with three straight strong outings, allowing a total of six runs while striking out 23 and walking only four in 22 innings. The 6-foot-6 left-hander has overcome six homers allowed during his current winning streak, including a pair versus Toronto last time out. Jose Altuve is 6-for-18 versus Sale, who owns a 6-1 record and 1.99 ERA in eight road starts.

Fister may not have the numbers to rival Sale's, but he was riding a 10-start unbeaten streak until surrendering three homers and four runs in a 6-1 loss at Kansas City last time out. Fister had recorded a quality start in 11 of his previous 12 turns and was 7-0 during his unbeaten run, including a 5-3 victory at Chicago on May 18. Fister will be fortunate to miss injured Melky Cabrera, who is 7-for-17 against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. Altuve went 0-for-4 Friday to snap his 11-game hitting streak.

2. White Sox manager Robin Ventura said Cabrera (wrist) could return to the lineup Sunday.

3. Astros CF Carlos Gomez ended a 15-game homerless drought Friday, but he has 11 RBIs in the last 14 games.

Preview: Marlins at Braves

Weather information is currently unavailable. 5-Day Forecast
GAME: Miami Marlins (42-38) at Atlanta Braves (27-53)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

There is no denying when Jose Fernandez is locked in the Miami Marlins’ ace is one of the best pitchers in baseball, and he is a big reason why the club finds itself in postseason contention as July begins. Fernandez starts the third of a four-game series Saturday at the Atlanta Braves looking to win for the 10th time in his past 12 starts.

Fernandez also played a big role in Miami’s 7-5 victory on Friday, lining a two-run double as a pinch-hitter in the 12th inning, and Marcell Ozuna went 4-for-6 with a run scored and three RBIs as the Marlins ended a three-game losing streak. Braves infielder Jace Peterson did not start but came on as a defensive replacement and finished with a double, extending his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games. Atlanta rallied to tie the game on Tyler Flowers’ ninth-inning homer. Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman is batting .403 in his past 16 games with seven doubles, three homers and eight RBIs.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Jose Fernandez (10-3, 2.28 ERA) vs. Braves RH Lucas Harrell (2014: 0-3, 9.49)

Fernandez struck out 13 in seven innings to beat the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, completing a month in which the 23-year-old posted a 1.67 ERA and struck out 42 with only five walks. He held the Braves to one hit in seven innings in his previous start June 21, but was not involved the decision. Fernandez ranks third in the National League in strikeouts (138) and pitchers’ WAR (3.3), and fifth in WHIP (0.99) and ERA.

Atlanta announced after Friday's game it will turn to Harrell, who has appeared in 10 games with Triple-A Gwinnett and is 18-33 with a 4.84 ERA in 88 major-league games (62 starts) with the Chicago White Sox and Houston from 2010-2014. The 31-year-old, who is 3-1 with a 2.92 ERA with Gwinnett this season, last pitched in the majors with Houston in 2014 and was 11-11 with a 3.76 ERA for the Astros in 2012. Harrell pitched six shutout innings Sunday against Charlotte, walking one and striking out five.

WALK-OFFS

1. Atlanta INF Gordon Beckham is expected to play for Class A Carolina on Saturday as he recovers from a left hamstring strain, and could be activated from the disabled list early next week.

2. Marlins 2B Derek Dietrich was hit by a pitch for a major-league leading 16th time Friday, after being plunked twice in Thursday’s series opener.

3. Braves CF Ender Inciarte left Friday after a hard slide into second base on a steal attempt in the fifth inning and is day-to-day with a right groin injury.

Preview: Tigers at Rays

Current Conditions - St. Petersburg

P/SUNNY 82 °F
Wind: N 5
5-Day Forecast GAME: Detroit Tigers (42-38) at Tampa Bay Rays (33-46)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Cameron Maybin is off to the best start in his career and the Detroit Tigers’ center fielder has been especially productive against the Tampa Bay Rays, going 13-for-19 with 10 RBIs. Maybin looks to extend his hitting streak to eight contests and lead the Tigers to their fifth consecutive victory when they visit the Rays on Saturday afternoon in the third of a four-game set.

Maybin has six hits in the first two games of the series and Victor Martinez belted a pair of homers while knocking in six runs Friday in Detroit’s 10-2 victory to extend his hitting streak to five contests. Veteran Justin Verlander takes the hill for the Tigers on Saturday as they try to move five games over .500 for the first time this season and he will oppose promising rookie Blake Snell for struggling Tampa Bay. The Rays gave up 20 runs in the last two games and have dropped 14 of 16 contests overall while plummeting to last place in the American League East. Logan Forsythe has been one of the bright lights for Tampa Bay, going 13-for-30 during a seven-game hitting streak.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Justin Verlander (7-6, 4.30 ERA) vs. Rays LH Blake Snell (1-2, 3.54)

Verlander comes in off one of his worst starts of the season when he allowed eight runs and nine hits over 4 2/3 innings against Cleveland on Sunday. The former AL MVP had gone 3-0 in his previous four outings in June, permitting nine runs in 27 2/3 frames combined. Desmond Jennings (hamstring, day-to-day) is 4-for-11 with a pair of homers against Verlander, who is 7-3 with a 3.49 ERA lifetime versus the Rays.

Snell notched his first major league victory in his fourth start last time out when he yielded four runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings against Boston on Monday. The 23-year-old had given up two or fewer earned runs in his first three starts, but has walked 10 combined over his last three. Snell has not yet matched his high of six strikeouts in his debut against the New York Yankees and opponents are batting .301 against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tampa Bay SS Brad Miller matched his career high with his 11th homer Friday and has reached double digits three straight seasons.

2. Martinez, who has 11 RBIs during a current five-game hitting streak, is batting .354 with 14 homers and 65 RBIs in 81 career games against the Rays.

3. Tampa Bay UTIL Taylor Motter was optioned to Triple-A Durham after Friday’s game and OF Steven Souza Jr. (hip) was activated from the disabled list.

Preview: Royals at Phillies

Current Conditions - Philadelphia

SUNNY 87 °F
Wind: WSW 14
5-Day Forecast GAME: Kansas City Royals (42-37) at Philadelphia Phillies (36-45)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 5:50 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

After being booed off the field in their previous homestand, the Philadelphia Phillies received a more favorable reaction from the Citizens Bank Park faithful by adding to the Kansas City Royals' road woes in the opener of their three-game set Friday. Winners of four in a row and six of their last eight, the Phillies look to continue their run of good fortune on Saturday as they vie for a second straight series victory.

Philadelphia is singing a distinctly different tune since getting drastically outscored 42-9 en route to being swept at home from June 15-20 as part of a season-high nine-game losing skid. Cody Asche has turned it on since the previous homestand, going 13-for-33 with seven doubles and as many RBIs in his last nine contests - including a run-scoring double in Friday's 4-3 victory. With all due respect to the Missouri native, Kansas City's Kendrys Morales has been blistering-hot as his two-run homer Friday extended his hitting streak to seven games, during which he is 17-for-28 with four blasts, nine RBIs and seven runs scored. Alcides Escobar has been pretty hot in his own right as he recorded his ninth multi-hit performance during his 12-game hitting streak for the Royals, who fell to 15-26 away from Kauffman Stadium.

TV: 5:50 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Danny Duffy (3-1, 3.24 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Aaron Nola (5-7, 4.45)

Duffy hopes his success in June carries over into the new month as he allowed just 13 runs in six outings (36 innings) en route to a 3-1 mark. The 27-year-old, who was named the franchise's pitcher of the month for June, matched a career high by going eight innings while permitting two runs and striking out eight in a 6-2 victory over St. Louis on Monday. Duffy has struggled to keep the ball in the park, however, surrendering 10 homers in his last seven trips to the mound.

Nola is 0-3 with a bloated 15.23 ERA in his last four starts after yielding five runs on 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings of a no-decision versus San Francisco on Sunday. The 23-year-old hasn't escaped the fourth inning in any of his last four outings and allowed 25 runs and 32 hits in that span. Manager Pete Mackanin told reporters prior to the series opener that Saturday's start is "very important" for the struggling Nola, who will be making the 30th trip to the mound and first of his career versus Kansas City.

WALK-OFFS

Current Conditions - Boston

L/RAIN 64 °F
Wind: SSW 15
5-Day Forecast GAME: Los Angeles Angels (32-48) at Boston Red Sox (43-36)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 7:15 PM EST
WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Boston Red Sox look to make it two in a row to start a crucial homestand when they continue a three-game series with the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Saturday. Following a 2-4 road trip that capped a 10-16 June and increased the heat on manager John Farrell, the Red Sox began a nine-game stretch at Fenway Park with a 5-4 win over the Angels on Friday.

An offense that was limited to five hits - all singles - in a shutout loss at Tampa Bay on Wednesday erupted for 16 hits versus four Los Angeles pitchers. David Ortiz had three of those hits, including his 522nd career homer, and is hitting .453 during an 18-game hitting streak at home. Angels lefty Hector Santiago opposes Clay Buchholz in a matchup of struggling veterans on Saturday. Buchholz has been awarded another start as he attempts to regain his footing in the rotation, but he has not put anything in stone after allowing eight runs in 11 1/3 innings since returning to a starting role.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH Hector Santiago (4-4, 5.27 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Clay Buchholz (3-8, 5.90)

This will be the 100th career start for Santiago, who has lasted at least six innings in each of his last three. However, he was reached for a season high-tying six runs in six frames in a no-decision against Oakland his last time out. The 28-year-old is 0-2 with a 6.08 ERA in three games (two starts) in his career at Fenway Park, and Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts is 5-for-8 with a double against Santiago.

Buchholz has failed to complete six innings in each of his last three starts after giving up five runs (four earned) in 5 1/3 frames at Texas on Sunday. He walked a season-high five batters while striking out three and continues to sport a career-worst strikeout-to-walk ratio (1.44). Angels stars Albert Pujols and Mike Trout are a combined 12-for-31 with three homers against Buchholz, who owns a 4.83 ERA in 12 career starts against Los Angeles.

WALK-OFFS

1. Ortiz has also reached safely in 28 consecutive home games.

2. Angels 1B C.J. Cron slugged a grand slam to provide all of his team's offense on Friday and is 7-for-18 with six RBIs during a four-game hitting streak.

3. Red Sox 1B Hanley Ramirez (side) missed the series opener and is considered day-to-day.

Preview: Cubs at Mets

Weather information is currently unavailable.
GAME: Chicago Cubs (51-28) at New York Mets (42-37)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 7:15 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The New York Mets’ dormant offense has sprung back to life, and they’ll try for another powerful performance against a tough opponent Saturday. The Mets hope the momentum from Friday’s 10-2 rout of the visiting Chicago Cubs will carry over to the third of the four-game set against reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta.

The Mets slugged five home runs Friday, chasing starter Jason Hammel early to beat the Cubs for the second straight night. The offensive outburst was a welcomed sight for New York, which had totaled only 13 runs in its previous six games and had four homers over its last eight contests. The Mets entered the series having lost nine straight regular-season games against the Cubs, though their four-game sweep in last year’s NL Championship Series changed the complexion of the matchup. The Cubs still own the best record in the majors and a 10-game lead atop the NL Central, but they’ve lost eight of their last 12.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (12-2, 2.10 ERA) vs. Mets RH Bartolo Colon (6-4, 2.86)

Arrieta had a rough month of June by his lofty standards, going 3-2 with a 3.54 ERA in five starts. The 30-year-old was not sharp Monday at Cincinnati, but he picked up the win despite allowing five runs and walking five over five innings. Arrieta is 2-1 with a 1.82 ERA in five starts against the Mets.

After leaving his previous start in the first inning when he took a liner off the hand, Colon showed no ill effects Sunday at Atlanta. The 43-year-old limited the Braves to one run and six hits over seven innings but was tagged with his first loss since May 18. Colon has faced the Cubs six times, but only twice in the past decade, going 0-1 and allowing two runs in 14 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets OF Juan Lagares (thumb) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Saturday or Sunday, while OF Curtis Granderson (calf) could be headed to the DL.

2. Cubs OF Jason Heyward (7-for-17, homer) and 2B/OF Ben Zobrist (8-for-14, four homers) have enjoyed success against Colon.

3. Chicago is 0-for-16 with runners in scoring position in the series.

M/CLOUDY 90 °F

5-Day Forecast GAME: Cincinnati Reds (29-52) at Washington Nationals (49-32)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 7:15 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Washington Nationals have rebounded in a big way after a season-high seven-game losing skid threatened to knock them off their perch atop the National League East. A winner of six in a row, Washington will look to secure a series victory and hand the reeling Cincinnati Reds yet another setback on Saturday when the clubs continue their four-game set in the nation's capital.

Although the official fireworks presentation was cancelled due to the sheer length of the contest, Ben Revere ignited a celebration on Friday with an RBI double to cap a 3-2 victory in 14 innings and improve to 8-for-19 in his last four games. Daniel Murphy drove in a pair of runs and is 13-for-33 with two homers, nine RBIs and seven runs scored in his last eight contests, but is 0-for-6 versus Saturday starter Dan Straily. Cincinnati simply can't buy a break with losses in 11 of its last 13 contests, although Adam Duvall has proven to be a bright spot in an otherwise bleak season. The 27-year-old recorded his third multi-hit performance in his last five games on Friday, collecting five RBIs in that stretch.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Dan Straily (4-5, 4.38 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Joe Ross (7-4, 3.30)

Straily suffered his third straight loss in horrific fashion on Monday, as the 27-year-old was blitzed for season highs in both runs (seven) and hits (nine) allowed in a campaign-worst 3 2/3 innings of an 11-8 setback to the Chicago Cubs. Straily was taken deep on two occasions and issued three walks for the ninth time in his last 13 outings. The road hasn't been kind to Straily, who is just 2-4 with a 5.22 ERA in six starts (eight appearances) this season.

Ross improved to 4-0 in his last seven outings on Monday despite allowing four runs on 10 hits over six innings of an 11-4 triumph against the New York Mets. The 23-year-old kept the ball in the park for just the second time in his last 10 trips to the mound. Ross will be making his 29th career start and first versus Cincinnati.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cincinnati 1B Joey Votto, who is 10-for-28 in his last seven games, is 5-for-9 with two doubles and two runs scored in the first two contests of the series.

2. Washington 3B Anthony Rendon is 1-for-10 with three strikeouts in his last three games after collecting seven hits in his previous four.

3. Reds 3B Eugeno Suarez has recorded nine singles during his six-game hitting streak.

5-Day Forecast GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (39-41) at Oakland Athletics (35-45)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Pittsburgh Pirates seek their first three-game winning streak on the road since late April when they visit the Oakland Athletics on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game interleague series. Pittsburgh has struggled away from home this season, going 17-22, but improved to 2-1 on its nine-game trek and looks to win three straight on the road for the first time since capturing four in a row (one in Arizona, three in Colorado) from April 24-27.

The bottom half of the lineup came up big for the Pirates in the series opener, as Matt Joyce, Josh Harrison, Jordy Mercer and Chris Stewart combined to go 6-for-15 with six RBIs and four runs scored, with Mercer launching a solo homer. Oakland has lost two straight after a stretch during which it won six of seven contests and failed to score at least six runs for the first time in eight games. Marcus Semien did not slow down on Friday as he belted his career-high 17th home run - giving him four blasts and nine RBIs over his last six contests. Coco Crisp received a day off but is expected to return to the lineup Saturday as he has gone 11-for-29 with 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored during an eight-game hitting streak.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Chad Kuhl (1-0, 5.40 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Rich Hill (8-3, 2.25)

Kuhl will be making his second career start after recording the victory against Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers in his major-league debut on Sunday. The 23-year-old native of Delaware worked five innings, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks. Kuhl went 6-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 14 starts with Triple-A Indianapolis prior to being called up by the Pirates.

Hill looks to win his sixth consecutive outing as he makes his first start since May 29 due to a strained right groin that landed him on the disabled list. The 36-year-old from Boston has allowed fewer than three earned runs in nine of his 11 turns and has kept the ball in the park this season, serving up only two homers in 64 innings. Hill has posted a 3-1 record and 3.79 ERA in seven career starts against Pittsburgh.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pittsburgh LF Starling Marte went 0-for-3 on Friday, ending his six-game hitting streak.

2. Oakland optioned LHP Dillon Overton to Nashville and recalled INF Tyler Ladendorf from the Triple-A club.

3. Pirates RF Gregory Polanco played in the outfield Friday for the first time since June 23 due to a sore left leg and went 0-for-4.

5-Day Forecast GAME: San Francisco Giants (51-31) at Arizona Diamondbacks (36-46)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Francisco Giants have caught the Chicago Cubs for most victories in the National League and look to continue their strong play when they visit the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game set. San Francisco (51-31) recorded a 6-4 victory in Friday's series opener to win for the 15th time in its last 20 games.

The Giants are receiving surprising contributions from Conor Gillaspie, who fell a homer shy of the cycle Friday while improving to 11-for-20 during his five-game hitting streak. San Francisco also received solid performances from Jarrett Parker (2-for-4, home run) and the recently recalled Grant Green (2-for-4, two RBIs) while backup catcher Trevor Brown drove in two runs with Buster Posey resting after playing in the previous 20 games. Arizona is 0-5 at home against the Giants this season and scheduled starter Patrick Corbin has fared miserably at Chase Field with an 0-5 record and 7.02 ERA in seven home starts. Jake Lamb has homered in three consecutive games for the Diamondbacks and is 11-for-29 with four blasts and 11 RBIs over his last eight contests.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (8-5, 3.91 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (4-6, 4.99)

Samardzija has allowed six runs in back-to-back starts and three of his last five outings. He is 1-3 with a 6.89 ERA in his last six starts after posting a 2.54 ERA over his first 10 turns. Samardzija defeated the Diamondbacks on May 13, when he gave up one run and eight hits over eight innings, and is 1-1 with a 3.89 ERA in 10 career appearances (five starts) versus Arizona.

Corbin received a no-decision against Colorado in his last turn despite walking five and allowing six runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. The season has been a consistent struggle as he posted a 4.88 ERA in April, followed by marks of 5.03 in May and 5.04 in June. Corbin is 4-4 with a 3.48 ERA in 12 career starts against the Giants and received a no-decision on May 14, when he gave up three runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks RHP Zack Greinke (oblique) wasn't placed on the disabled list Friday but likely won't make another start until next weekend.

2. San Francisco CF Denard Span (neck) was a late scratch from Friday's lineup and manager Bruce Bochy is hopeful he will return on Saturday.

3. Arizona recalled C Tuffy Gosewisch from Triple-A Reno and placed OF Rickie Weeks Jr. on the bereavement list.

DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Diego Padres will try to maintain an impressive offensive streak at home when they continue a three-game interleague series with the New York Yankees on Saturday. Following a 7-6 victory in the series opener, the Padres have posted at least five runs in eight straight games at Petco Park.

However, San Diego is only 4-4 in that stretch and nearly saw its new-look bullpen cough up a big lead against the Yankees, who scored four times in the ninth inning and finally were retired with the tying run on third base. Wil Myers followed up a scorching month of June (.327, 11 home runs) with a two-run shot for the Padres, who also received a solo blast from rookie Ryan Schimpf. Brian McCann went deep for New York, giving him three homers in his last three games. The Yankees started the contest without right fielder Carlos Beltran (hamstring), who delivered a pinch-hit double in the ninth and was the runner stranded at third when the game ended.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FS1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Ivan Nova (5-5, 5.32 ERA) vs. Padres LH Drew Pomeranz (7-7, 2.76)

After working at least six innings in five consecutive starts, Nova has failed to go beyond the fifth in his last three turns, giving up 15 runs in 14 innings during that stretch. He owns a 6.98 ERA and 1.55 WHIP on the road this year but tossed seven scoreless frames in his only previous appearance at Petco Park in 2013. Myers (4-for-13, home run) has had some success versus Nova while Melvin Upton Jr. and Alexei Ramirez are a combined 7-for-38 against him.

Pomeranz posted his sixth start of the season without allowing an earned run when he limited Cincinnati to three hits over seven scoreless frames last Saturday. He has fanned at least six batters in six consecutive outings and entered the weekend ranked sixth in the National League with 10.42 strikeouts per nine innings. The 27-year-old held the Yankees to one earned run over seven innings in his only previous start against them back in 2014.

WALK-OFFS

1. Yankees SS Didi Gregorius went 2-for-4 with two runs scored on Friday and is batting .429 with two homers and five RBIs during his five-game hitting streak.

2. The Padres on Friday placed RHP Erik Johnson (elbow) on the 15-day disabled list.

3. San Diego is 18-7 on Fridays and Saturdays but 16-38 on all other days of the week.

5-Day Forecast GAME: Baltimore Orioles (47-32) at Seattle Mariners (41-39)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Baltimore Orioles suddenly have stopped scoring runs in bushels and strive to break out of their offensive funk when they visit the Seattle Mariners on Saturday for the third contest of their four-game set. Baltimore managed just five runs and 13 hits while losing the first two games of the series after averaging 8.3 runs during a seven-game winning streak.

Manny Machado went hitless in four at-bats on Friday to halt his 10-game hitting streak and said he isn't concerned with the quietness of the bats. "It's baseball. You're not going to hit every night, plain and simple," Machado told reporters. "You keep grinding it and keeping doing what you do, and you get through it." The Mariners are 5-2 on their nine-game homestand and received a boost on Friday from Dae-Ho Lee, who went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer to end a 16-game power drought. Seattle's Robinson Cano was hitless in four at-bats after going 11-for-28 during a seven-game hitting streak.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, MASN (Baltimore), ROOT (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Tyler Wilson (4-5, 4.50 ERA) vs. Mariners LH James Paxton (1-3, 4.15)

Wilson defeated Tampa Bay in his last turn despite surrendering five runs and 10 hits in five innings. He has allowed five runs in three of his last five starts but mixed in a dominant performance in which he blanked Boston on three hits over eight frames. Wilson is 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA in two career appearances (one start) against the Mariners.

Paxton also gave up five runs over five innings in a no-decision against St. Louis his last time out, yielding eight hits while striking out seven. He has fanned 41 batters in 34 1/3 frames but also has a 1.67 WHIP and .320 batting average against. Paxton received a no-decision in his lone career start against Baltimore on Aug. 2, 2014, when he allowed two runs and four hits in 4 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners RHP Felix Hernandez (calf) threw a 43-pitch bullpen session on Friday and is on pace to be activated after the All-Star break.

2. 1B Chris Davis hit his 181st homer as a member of the Orioles on Friday - one behind Ken Singleton for eighth place in franchise history.

3. Seattle LF Seth Smith is 4-for-8 with two homers in the series and 6-for-12 over his last three games.

CLOUDY 63 °F

5-Day Forecast GAME: Colorado Rockies (37-42) at Los Angeles Dodgers (45-37)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 02 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Colorado Rockies hope to have two key players back in the lineup as they attempt to halt their three-game slide when they visit the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game series. Rookie shortstop Trevor Story, who ranks second on the team in home runs (19) and third in RBIs (50), has not played since Tuesday due to a bruised right middle finger while second baseman DJ LeMahieu, who leads the club in triples (five) and stolen bases (seven) has made one pinch-hitting appearance since Sunday thanks to a bruised left knee.

The double-play combination's absence was noticeable on Friday as the Rockies managed only three hits in a 5-0 loss. The series-opening victory was the fourth in five overall contests for the Dodgers, who have won seven in a row at home. Corey Seager is wielding a hot bat as he enters Saturday with a 14-game hitting streak during which he has gone 24-for-57 (.421). Los Angeles lost Yasiel Puig to a left shoulder injury in the seventh inning on Friday, but the right fielder is expected to be in the lineup Saturday.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Chad Bettis (6-5, 5.84 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Scott Kazmir (6-3, 4.67)

Bettis remained unbeaten in his last four starts as he escaped with a no-decision against Arizona on Sunday after surrendering seven runs on 12 hits and three walks in five innings. The 27-year-old Texan has struggled keeping opponents off the scoreboard, allowing four or more runs in all but two of his 16 turns this season. Bettis has posted a 4.58 ERA in six career games (three starts) against Los Angeles but has yet to record a decision.

Kazmir's unbeaten streak reached nine starts Monday as he recorded a win at Pittsburgh despite yielding four runs on four hits and four walks over five innings. The 32-year-old native of Houston, who hasn't lost since May 9 against the New York Mets, has served up only two home runs in his last seven outings. Kazmir has made two career starts versus Colorado, going 1-0 while yielding seven runs and 12 hits - four homers - over 11 frames (5.73 ERA).

WALK-OFFS

1. Rockies RHP Tyler Chatwood (back) and LHP Jake McGee (knee) both appear ready to return to action.

2. Los Angeles placed LHP Clayton Kershaw (back) and OF Joc Pederson (shoulder) on the 15-day disabled list, activated newly acquired RHP Bud Norris and purchased the contract of OF Will Venable from Triple-A Oklahoma City while designating RHP Layne Somsen for assignment.

3. Colorado LHP Chris Rusin (shoulder) is expected to throw a bullpen session over the weekend.
