SBPI Rankings - Week 7

Here is the second College Football SportsBoss Power Index (SBPI) installment of the 2015 season.

Quarterly Rankings

Without further ado here are the Top 25 rankings through action on Saturday October 10.

The columns OFF/DEF/TOTAL represent where each team statistically ranks across 128 teams in the FBS; we also include the AP Poll, USA Today Poll, ESPN’s FPI & Sagarin’s rankings which can all be used as a solid comparison tool followed by each team’s SOS adjusted RATING and RANK:

Breakdown of Top 25 by conference:

AAC: 0

ACC: 5

B10: 4

B12: 3

CUSA: 0

IND: 1

MAC: 0

MWC: 1

P12: 4

SEC: 7

SUN: 0

Here are additional teams of note that did not make the Breakdown of SBPI Top 25 but were ranked inside the Top 25 of at least one of the other four sources I use for comparative purposes:

#26 Duke (#25 AP, #24 USAT)

#28 Washington (#20 SAG)

#29 Ole Miss (#13 AP, #12 USAT, #4 FPI, #10 SAG)

#30 UCLA (#18 AP, #18 USAT, #18 FPI, #21 SAG)

#31 Northwestern (#20 AP, #21 USAT)

#33 Oklahoma (#19 AP, #19 USAT, #11 FPI, #15 SAG)

#35 Michigan State (#7 AP, #4 USAT)

#36 Baylor (#2 AP, #2 USAT, #1 FPI, #2 SAG)

#40 Houston (#24 AP)

#46 Memphis (#22 USAT)

#51 Kansas State (#25 SAG)

#56 Toledo (#22 AP, #25 USAT)

Let’s take a look at the relationship between SBPI & record in matrix form (there is a 71% correlation between SBPI ranking & wins):

TOP 25 RATINGS

Record Top 25 Top 36 Top 50

6-0 5 6 6

5-0 5 6 9

5-1 5 8 9

4-1 2 5 5

4-2 2 4 6

3-2 2 3 5

3-3 2 2 3

2-3 - - 3

2-4 2 2 4

So of the Top 25 SBPI teams 10 are undefeated, 15 have at worst one loss & just 2 are under .500 (Arkansas & Georgia Tech); those two teams have played the 2nd & 7th toughest schedules in the country, respectively, which boosts their rating – if we remove SOS & simply judge strength on performance Arkansas is 41st & Georgia Tech is 37th (3rd numerical column in first matrix).

Of the SBPI Top 50 almost half (24) of the group has a record of 6-0, 5-0 or 5-1 while 29 of the 50 have 0 or 1 losses.

The SBPI, and looking at it in this sort of breakdown, can add value by seeing which teams have suffered perhaps from “bad luck” so far (playing better football than their record indicates), or teams that may have been “lucky” this year (rating lower on the SBPI scale than their record suggests).

Here are the five lowest rated SBPI teams that have a winning record:

#110 South Alabama 3-2

#97 Marshall 5-1

#96 Tulsa 3-2

#95 Washington State 3-2

#91 Georgia Southern 4-1

Louisville at Florida State (ESPN, 12:00 p.m. ET)

Louisville might not be getting it done regularly in wins and losses, but they are getting it done at the counter, cashing four of five times against the number. And they are an impressive 26-8 ATS in their past 34 road games, while going 19-7 ATS in their past 26 conference tilts. Florida State continues to win games, but they are just 2-3 ATS against the spread this season, including 0-2 ATS in their past two conference games. FSU is also just 1-6 ATS in the past seven home games, and 2-7 ATS in their past nine dating back to last season. Still, people might be surprised to see them open as just a seven-point favorite given the overall records. Really, their success depends on the health of RB Dalvin Cook's hamstring and if he is ready to go full throttle. The under is 8-1 in Louisville's past nine on grass, and 4-1-1 in their past six overall. The under is also 9-3-1 in Louisville's past 13 road games. For FSU, the under is a perfect 4-0 in the past four, 10-1 in their past 11 at the Doak, and 6-1 in their past seven ACC tilts.

Pittsburgh at Georgia Tech (ESPN3, 12:30 p.m. ET)

Both of these teams are hard to figure. Pitt lost ACC Player of the Year James Conner in the opener to a knee injury, but they have persevered. That's because the defense has stepped up and allowed just 264.6 yards per game, seventh-best in all of FBS. That includes an average of just 15.7 points per game in three road contests this season. Pitt has covered four in a row on the road, while the Yellow Jackets are 6-1 ATS in their past seven home contests. However, Georgia Tech has failed to cover in four straight, and they're 0-4 ATS in their past four against teams with a winning overall record. The over has been hot for each, going 7-3-1 in the past 11 for Pitt, though the under is 7-2-1 in their past 10 against losing teams. The over is a perfect 5-0 in Georgia Tech's past five home games, and 6-2 in their past eight overall.

Virginia Tech at Miami-Florida (ESPNU, 3:30p.m. ET)

This is an elimination game of sorts, as the Hokies and Hurricanes renew their rivalry. Virginia Tech saved their season last Friday with a 28-13 win over N.C. State. Miami had a valiant effort, coming up just short in a loss and cover at Florida State. The Canes are suddenly on a two-game losing streak, with both of those setbacks on the road in Cincinnati and Tallahassee. Virginia Tech is just 6-14 ATS in their past 20 away from home, while the Canes are 5-11 ATS in their past 16 ACC tilts. Something's gotta give. The road team has cashed in four of the past five meetings, with the Hokies going 6-1 ATS in their past seven trips to Miami. The underdog is also a sparkling 10-4 in the past 14 meetings. The under has been the play, too, going 5-1 in the past six in Miami, and 9-3 in the past 12 meetings overall. The under is also 8-1 in Miami's past nine ACC games, and 9-2 in Va. Tech's past 11 against conference foes.

Syracuse at Virginia (ESPN3, 3:30 p.m.)

Syracuse got off to a 3-0 start this season, but fell and fell hard at South Florida last week in a 45-24 flop. They're now just 1-2 ATS over the past three, too, after covering their first two. One thing that has been consistent for the Orange - the over. It has cashed in all five games, as they have scored 24 or more points in every game, and allowed 27 or more points in each of the past three. The defense has been slipping lately, too, giving up more points than the previous game in each of the past four. 'Cuse is just 2-7 ATS in the past nine road games against a team with a losing home record, and 1-4 ATS in their past five ACC battles. Virginia is a dismal 1-4 SU, but they're 7-3-1 ATS in their past 11 home games, and 9-4-1 ATS in the past 14 against a team with a winning overall record.

Boston College at Clemson (ESPNU, 7:00 p.m.)

Boston College is coming off one of the lowest scoring games in years, and they were on the short end. BC's defense came up huge again, but their offense sputtered in a 3-0 loss against Wake Forest last Saturday at home. Now, the Eagles hit the road. The under is a perfect 5-0 for BC this season, and they're allowing just 7.2 points per game. Clemson is their biggest offensive test, and they'll have to key on shutting down RB Wayne Gallman who has rambled for at least 111 yards in three in a row. Clemson is averaging 35.4 points per game, so this will be an interesting battle to see if defense or offense prevails. BC is 5-2 ATS in their past seven on the road, including 5-1 ATS in their past six against a team with a winning home record. Clemson has covered five of their past seven overall, but they're just 1-6 ATS in their past seven ACC battles. The underdog has hit in seven of the past 10 meetings. For the total, the under is a perfect 5-0 in the past five meetings at Death Valley, and 5-1 in the past six meetings overall.

Wake Forest at North Carolina (ESPN3, 7:00 p.m.)

Wake Forest evened up its record with a hard-fought 3-0 win at Boston College last weekend. It was their first road cover in six tries. Despite the win and cover, the Deacs are still 7-17 ATS in their past 24 road games against a team with a winning home record. The Tar Heels are working on a 5-2 ATS mark over their past seven conference games, and they're 9-4 ATS in their past 13 following a cover in the previous game. The under has been the play for both lately, as it is 21-8 in the past 29 for Wake and 13-6 in their past 19 road outings. The under is 4-1 in UNC's past five at Kenan, and 6-2 in their past eight games overall. In this series, the home team has covered each of the past four meetings.

Big 12 Report - Week 7

2015 BIG 12 STANDINGS

Team SU Conference ATS Over/Under

Baylor 5-0 2-0 3-1 4-1

Iowa State 2-3 1-1 2-2-1 1-3-1

Kansas 0-5 0-2 1-4 2-3

Kansas State 3-2 0-2 3-2 3-2

Oklahoma 4-1 1-1 3-2 2-3

Oklahoma State 6-0 3-0 3-3 2-4

Texas 2-4 1-2 2-4 2-4

Texas Christian 6-0 3-0 2-4 4-2

Texas Tech 4-2 1-2 4-1-1 5-1

West Virginia 3-2 0-2 2-3 1-4

West Virginia at Baylor (FOX, 12:00 p.m. ET)

Baylor puts their 18-game home winning streak on the line against an angry West Virginia team coming off a loss last weekend at home against Oklahoma State. The Mountaineers were sloppy in that loss, turning the ball over four times, including three fumbles. They can ill-afford any miscues against a Baylor team averaging 64.2 points per game, including 68.0 PPG in two home games. West Virginia slides into this game 1-5 ATS in their past six against teams with a winning record, and 1-4 ATS in their past five conference tilts. Baylor is 25-6 ATS in their past 31 at home, and 4-1 ATS in their past five against teams with a winning overall mark. In addition, they're 5-2 ATS in their past seven conference games and 25-10-1 ATS in their past 36 overall.

Texas Tech at Kansas (FOX Sports 1, 12:00 p.m. ET)

Texas Tech heads to Lawrence to battle a Kansas team which might be one of the worst squads in FBS. The Jayhawks are reeling after a 66-7 pounding at the hands of Baylor, a team with a similar high-powered offense. Kansas will give QB Ryan Willis a second straight start, as the third-stringer fills in for the injured Montell Cozart (shoulder) and Deondre Ford (thumb). While Kansas might be able to keep it slightly closer than last week, the defense will have its hands full against a Texas Tech offense with 30 plays of 30 or more yards. TTU is 7-1-1 ATS in the past nine games overall, and 5-1 ATS in their past six conference battles. KU is 1-6 ATS in their past seven games overall, and 0-4 ATS in their past four Big 12 outings.

Oklahoma at Kansas State (ABC, 3:30 p.m. ET)

Oklahoma is coming off a stunning and disappointing loss to Texas in the Red River rivalry last weekend. K-State has tasted defeat in each of the past two games, and they believe they should have won each of those outings at Oklahoma State and at home against TCU. It will be a tall order to get back on track against an Oklahoma team which has won five straight trips to Manhattan by double digits. In addition, Oklahoma is 15-1 in the past 16 games following their rivalry game with Texas. Oklahoma might be 3-7 ATS in the past 10 conference tilts, but they're 6-2 ATS in their past eight road games against a team with a winning home record. K-State is 7-2 ATS in the past nine home games and 21-7-1 ATS in the past 29 against a team with a winning record. However, the Wildcats are 1-5 ATS in their past six at home against the Sooners, and the road team has cashed in six in a row in this series. The over has hit in six of the past seven meetings, and four of the past five in Manhattan.

Texas Christian at Iowa State (ESPN2, 7:00 p.m.)

TCU is back on the road one week after a scare at K-State. The Horned Frogs have averaged 51.0 points per game through six outings, while the Cyclones have allowed 29.4 points per game. TCU annihilated Iowa State 55-3 in Fort Worth last season as Trevone Boykin rolled up 460 yards and a career-high total of 559 yards. TCU is 2-1 ATS at home this season, but they're 0-3 ATS in three road outings. Iowa State has covered two of their three games in Ames. The Horned Frogs have covered 15 of the past 21 games, but they're 1-5 ATS in the past six dating back to last season. The Cyclones are 1-6 ATS in their past seven conference tilts, and 2-7-1 ATS in the past 10 games overall.

Bonus Play

147 NEVADA at 148 WYOMING 4:00 PM

Take: NEVADA -6

This has been one right season for Wyoming. The Cowboys have been unable to find their way to the winner’s circle, and making matters worse is the concussion epidemic that has descended upon the Cowboys.

Wyoming lost three more players to head injuries last week against Air Force and while all three players are on this week’s depth chart, as of right now, none of them have been cleared to play. Add in two key offensive guys who are still out with their concussions, and you get the picture. This is a bad Cowboys team that is also very beat up.

One silver lining for the Cowboys is that they will finally get to face a four-man defensive front. That’s good news as Wyoming plays that scheme themselves and that should make them familiar with what they’re seeing after opening the season against five straight three-man fronts. Then bad news is that Nevada is off its best defensive game of the season as they very impressively stifled the New Mexico option last week.

There has been some support at the windows for Wyoming this week, but I don’t agree with it. The Wolf Pack showed me something in rebounding from a somewhat demoralizing loss in their big rivalry game with UNLV. They’ve got a little positive momentum right now and Wyoming certainly has none of that.

It’s also what I think is a pretty good match for the Wolf Pack. They’d like to run the football as much as possible. That being the case, Wyoming is a perfect opponent as the Cowboys are running out of healthy bodies on the defensive side and they’re lousy against the run as well.

This isn’t a slam dunk as Wyoming desperately needs to win a football game and it’s not like Nevada is a juggernaut. But I made this game -10 when factoring in all the guys who evidently won’t be playing for the hosts. If the Wolf Pack come to play, this is simply a game they ought to win reasonably comfortably and I’ve already laid the number with Nevada.

Bonus Play Northwestern

Talk has begun about Iowa going unbeaten. Usually when that happens the team loses its next game.
I see that scenario happening with the Hawkeyes.
Iowa hasn't won at Northwestern during the past seven years. The Hawkeyes are banged-up and facing what's sure to be an aroused Wildcats squad.
Not only did Northwestern get embarrassed 38-0 to Michigan last Saturday, but the Wildcats have a strong revenge motive after getting crushed by Iowa, 48-7, last season. That was Northwestern's worst defeat since 2010.
It's easy to write off Northwestern after its bad loss to Michigan. But that's a mistake. Not only are the Wolverines very good - a touchdown favorite this week against Michigan State - but the Wildcats have one of the best defenses in the country.
Stanford just scored 56 points on UCLA. Northwestern held the Cardinal to six points. The Wildcats rank in the top 10 in giving up the fewest yards and fewest points at just 12.2 points a game. That number shrinks to six points per game at home.
Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard isn't 100 percent and the Hawkeyes are using backup offensive tackles, one being true freshman James Daniels. It's the first time during the 17-year era of Kirk Ferentz the Hawkeyes are starting a true freshman on the offensive line. It comes at a bad time, too, for Iowa because Northwestern has two outstanding senior defensive ends.
Also remember that Iowa remains without wide receiver Tevaun Smith -their best deep threat - running back LeShun Daniels Jr. and tight end Jake Duzey.
Northwestern doesn't have a fancy offense, but Justin Jackson is one of the better running backs in the country. He's a two-time Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year.
The Wildcats catch a break because Iowa suffered another key injury in their win last week against Illinois when defensive end Drew Ott suffered an ACL knocking him out for the season. Ott leads Iowa with 7 1/2 tackles for losses and five sacks.

Soccer: EPL Best Bets - Week 9
By Chris David

Week 8 Recap

Bettors may’ve forgotten what happened two weeks ago and that’s probably a good thing for some clubs. There were a couple of eye-opening results in Week 8 and it started early on Saturday as Manchester City posted a 6-1 win over New Castle United. The result was as expected but watching Sergio Aguero score five goals in 20 minutes was special.

Later that day, Southampton (+375) handed Chelsea another home loss and the 3-1 decision knocked the defending champions into 16th place of the Premier League.

Sunday’s three-game card was highlighted with Arsenal’s ambush on Manchester United at the Emirates. The Gunners opened a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the match and stifled United for 90 minutes while posting the clean sheet victory.

Including four draws, favorites and underdogs posted a 3-3 record in Week 8 while the ‘over’ went 6-4.

Through eight weeks of EPL action, favorites are 34-22 with 24 draws and the ‘over’ is 41-37-2.

Also, make a note that Liverpool and Sunderland will have new managers on the sidelines this weekend after Brendan Rodgers and Dick Advocaat were removed from their duties respectively. Both clubs play on the road and are listed as underdogs.

Future Action

It’s really amazing that in early August, bettors were pressing Chelsea as a 3/2 favorite (Bet $100 to win $150) to repeat as Premier League champions. Eight games in and bookmakers are now begging bettors to take a chance on the Blues at 20/1 odds (Bet $100 to win $2,000).

Manchester City is now the top betting choice at 7/10 (Bet $100 to win $70) while Arsenal (9/4) isn’t far behind and Manchester United is still in the mix at 7/1 odds.

Considering the season still has 30 weeks left, I wouldn’t be surprised to see all of these numbers shuffle until the end.

Top 4

All four teams have the Champions League on deck next week and with key players returning from games with their national teams, you could see a handful of reserves in action this weekend.

Chelsea vs. Aston Villa (Saturday, USA, 10:00 a.m.)

It’s been very difficult to make a case for Chelsea (-300) this season, especially at home where the club has earned just four points in four games and the lone win came against a short-handed Arsenal squad.

Aston Villa (1-1-6) is currently in the relegation zone and can’t get out of its way lately, dropping four straight EPL games. To be fair, all four losses for the Lions came by one goal and the offense has actually been decent on the road (6) as opposed to at home (2). Not surprisingly, the ‘over’ has gone 3-1 in their four EPL road games.

The Blues swept both games from Aston Villa last season, which includes a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea has seen the ‘over’ go 7-1 this season and the oddsmakers have opened this week’s number at 2 ½ and that number has now jumped up to 3 at most betting shops.

Manchester United at Everton (Saturday, NBCSN, 10:00 a.m.)

Oddsmakers are expecting a tight affair for this matchup with Manchester United (+130) listed as the slight favorite over Everton (+220) while the draw is just a tad better (+230) than the odds on the Toffees.

It’s hard to ignore what Everton has done recently, alternating draws and wins in its last five games (2-3-0) and you expect that trend to continue, then a victory at Goodison Park is next up.

Man United had won four straight games in all competitions before getting blasted 3-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates two weeks ago. Was that a sign of things to come or just a fluke performance by United? It was just the second time this campaign that United was blanked and it was the most goals they’ve allowed too.

Everton has gone 1-1 versus Top 4 clubs this season, losing to Manchester City 2-0 and defeating Chelsea 3-1, both games at home. After this game, the Toffees complete their first go ‘round with the quartet by facing Arsenal on the road.

The home team has won three straight and five of the last six in this head-to-head series. The ‘over’ went 2-0 in both encounters last season but was on a 4-0 ‘under’ run in the previous four games.

Manchester City vs. Bournemouth (Saturday, NBC Extra, 10:00 a.m.)

After watching Man City dismantle New Castle United two weeks ago, it’s not surprising to see the Citizens listed as healthy favorites (-310) for this game, especially against newly promoted Bournemouth (+875).

However, the injury bug has hit City hard and the team will be without striker Sergio Aguero for at least a month due to an injury he sustained with his national club Argentina. Manchester will also be without David Silva but Yaya Toure, Samir Nasri and Fernando appear to be fit for Saturday’s game.

The Cherries have gone 1-3 on the road this season but have managed to score in three of those games. The lone win came at West Ham United and it was a wire-to-wire 4-3 victory.

In City’s three wins at home, all have come by two or more goals. The goal-line for this matchup is sitting at -1 ½ (+100) against Bournemouth.

Man City has watched the ‘over’ go 3-1 at home and Bournemouth has produced the same results in its league road games. The total is listed at 3 at most betting shops.

Arsenal at Watford (Saturday, NBC, 12:30 p.m.)

Vicarage Road should be rocking this weekend as newly promoted Watford (+450) will look to pull off a major upset against Arsenal (-200). Bettors will have to decide if the Gunners can break through and finally be the first team to solve the Hornets defensive tactics.

In four EPL home games this season, Watford has allowed one goal and at the same time they’ve only scored one which has led to a perfect 4-0 ‘under’ record.

Arsenal hasn’t been overly explosive this season but eight of its 13 goals have come on the road, which includes a recent 5-2 decision at Leicester City on Sept. 26.

Draw bettors can get back close to 3/1 odds on this matchup and that looks like a good lean considering Watford has four times in eight games but Arsenal (5-1-2) has only saw one of its game knotted.

Watford has only faced one other “Top 4” team this season and it lost 2-0 at Manchester City on Aug. 29.

Fearless Predictions

I’m glad there was a week off after dropping close to a nickel ($490) in Week 8. The first quarter of the season is coming to a close quickly and the deficit isn’t good ($1,580) and I’m being nice. Onto the ninth week and I’m going to toss in a Top-4 ‘chalk’ parlay.

Straight – Over 3 Aston Villa-Chelsea (+115) – 2 Units

Straight – Tottenham (+120) – 1 Unit

Straight – West Bromwich Albion (+100) – 1 Unit

Straight – Chelsea (-1.5, +100) over Aston Villa – 2 Units

Parlay – Chelsea (-325), Man United (+110), Man City (-300), Arsenal (-200) – 1 Unit

Louisiana Tech +13½

Louisiana Tech has played well enough throughout the season thus far to warrant my backing in this one. They gave Kansas State an absolute scare in Manhattan before losing by three points in overtime. The Bulldogs gained 23 first downs to just 17 for the Wildcats and they outgained Bill Snyder's team by a 451-355 margin. They can sling the pigskin, ranked 16th in the nation in yards passing per game and QB Jeff Driskel certainly won't be intimidated by a date in SEC country after having started his college career with Florida. Tech's defense has been stingy against the run, allowing just 115 yards rushing per game and Miss State's offense is down a notch this season, ranked 92nd in yards rushing per game, with a ground game consisting mostly of QB Dak Prescott. I don't believe Mississippi State is going to be able to pull away by enough of a margin to cover this number. I expect La Tech to hang around, averaging 494 total yards per contest. La Tech has covered five straight against SEC opponents and they're on a 20-8 ATS run on the road against teams with a winning home record.

Florida +7½

No one will be giving Florida a chance here based on the fact that starting quarterback Will Grier has been suspended for the season which is a huge blow. But it not be as big as people think. Sophomore quarterback Treon Harris started the season opener and threw for two touchdowns after an extended quarterback battle with Grier through spring practice and preseason camp. He isn't raw and actually has more career starts than Grier so the offense will not suffer as most think. As for LSU, the jury is still out. LSU sophomore sensation Leonard Fournette is a stud and a Heisman favorite right now. However, he hasn't faced a defense as deep and talented as Florida's this season as the tigers have played a very weak schedule to this point. Mississippi St. has been the toughest opponent and they were fortunate to win that game. The Gators defense is what has kept them undefeated as they are allowing 296.3 ypg which is good for 16th in the nation. Florida's defense has allowed only 12 points in two road games and the Gators are the only team in the nation to play at least two road games and not allow a touchdown. The Tigers have a sophomore quarterback of their own in Brandon Harris and actually has one less start that the other Harris. Here, we play against favorites of 3.5 to 10 points with a rushing defense allowing 125 or less rushing ypg, after gaining 5.5 or more rushing ypc last game. This situation is 42-16 ATS (72.4 percent) over the last five seasons.

Arizona St +7

Many have now gone as far as calling Utah the top team in the Pac 12 and we’re not buying it. They are solid but now because of their 5-0 record, over rated in our opinion. The Utes have been outgained in 3 of their 5 games and they are just +50 yards on the season. This team is NOT ranked in the top 20 in offensive or defensive efficiency. They’ve been winning because their opponents are turning the ball over. They are already +11 in turnovers just 5 games into the season. They’ve won the TO battle in every game this year including +3 vs Utah St, Oregon, and last week vs Cal. Their win over Michigan to start the season was while the Wolverines were still feeling their way. A pick 6 also helped the Utes in that 7 point game. Their win @ Oregon is much less impressive as the Ducks are WAY down this year and just lost at home to Washington State last week. Cal turned the ball over SIX times last week and still had a shot to win. Arizona State was considered one of the favorites in the Pac 12 to start the season. Their two losses are not “embarrassing” by any means as they came at the hands of Texas A&M & USC. The Devils seem to be playing much better right now as they rolled over UCLA on the road and then walloped Colorado last week. Since the Utes joined the Big 12 ASU has beaten them all 4 times. We’ll take the points here. The Utes have skated by all season and it catches up with them here.

San Diego St /San Jose St Under 48

The Aztecs continue to be an "under machine" as they're now 22-10 to the under the last 3 seasons combined. San Diego State has allowed a total of just 21 points the last two weeks combined and, in weeks 5 through 9 the last 3 seasons, the under is 9-1 (90%) in Aztecs games. Overall, in the month of October, San Diego State is on a phenomenal long-term 39-18 run to the under. In road games with a posted total between 45.5 and 49 points the under is 14-3 in San Diego State games. The Aztecs defense has dominated the last two weeks with an average of just 170 totals yards allowed per game! The key here is their offense is unlikely to do a whole lot in this conference match-up with San Jose State. The Spartans are allowing an average of just 117 passing yards per game this season. San Jose State will force the Aztecs to stick to their ground game and San Diego State will quickly become one dimensional on offense. The Spartans have allowed under 250 yards of offense in each of their home games this season. In games in weeks 5 through 9, the Spartans are 24-16 to the under.

Syracuse +7

With Syracuse coming off three prominent games in a row they were caught in the first road game of the season for the team with a stunning 45-24 loss at South Florida. The Bulls are clearly an improved team and they hit some big plays to get an early lead as the Syracuse only had three fewer first downs in the game. Syracuse had hung with LSU the previous week and picked up wins vs. Wake Forest and Central Michigan, scoring at least 24 points in every game this season despite being down to Eric Dungey at quarterback, the #3 signal-caller as the season started. Dungey has just one interception this season while completing 60 percent of his passes as the freshman has looked like a competent leader moving forward. Virginia has faced a brutal schedule but the Cavaliers don't have a FBS win this season and after last week's valiant effort at Pittsburgh it is not clear what this team will have left in the tank with a 1-4 start and a major overhaul seemingly ahead for the program. The shaky run defense numbers for Virginia make the Cavaliers a difficult team to support in the favorite role and a bounce-back may be in order for an Orange team that has more to play for. Syracuse ahs much better defensive numbers particularly against the run despite having to play LSU and the second road game for the Orange should be a better opportunity than the first.

Northwestern +2

I think we are seeing a huge overreaction here to the Wildcats poor showing on the road against the Wolverines. While most expected the defense to play better, that was a horrible matchup for Northwestern’s offense. Michigan has one of the elite defenses in the country and are built to stop the run. They held the Wildcats high-powered rushing attack to just 38 yards on 25 attempts. The same Wildcats rushing attack that hadn’t rushed for fewer than 184 yards in a single game and had put up 225 against Stanford and 201 against Duke.

While Iowa comes in ranked 5th in the country against the run, allowing just 78.0 ypg, a lot of that has to do with an extremely soft schedule. That run defense also took a big hit last week when star defensive end Drew Ott suffered a knee injury that will have him sidelined indefinitely. The Hawkeye’s 6 opponents combined only average 3.8 yards/carry. Even after last week’s awful showing on the ground, Northwestern is still averaging 4.1 ypc against opponents that are allowing just 3.9 ypc.

Northwestern is primed for a big bounce back performance and with the Hawkeyes undefeated and having won at Wisconsin, we are getting some great value here with the Wildcats at home. Not only will Northwestern be motivated off that embarrassing loss, but the home team has dominated this series, winning and covering each of the last 5 meetings.

Iowa’s offense is centered around their running game, which comes in ranked 33rd in the country at 201.2 ypg. Much like their defensive numbers, I feel their production on the ground is a bit inflated given their competition. Iowa’s averaging 4.8 ypc, but their 6 opponents on average are giving up 4.4 ypc. While it wasn’t great last week, Northwestern’s defense comes into this game ranked 9th in the country in total defense, allowing just 269.5 ypg. They are only giving up 3.9 ypc against teams that average 4.3 ypc. Keep in mind their poor defensive numbers last week were a result of their offensive not being able to get anything going, leaving the defense on the field for over 37 minutes.

The two games where Iowa didn’t put up huge rushing numbers were at home against Pittsburgh (105), which they squeaked out a 27-24 win and on the road against Wisconsin (144), where they won 10-6. That win against the Badgers looks good on paper, but Iowa was lucky to win that game. They were outgained by 99 yards and benefited greatly from 4 Wisconsin turnovers.

Wildcats are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 after totaling 275 or less total yards and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 following a SU loss by more than 20 points.

Goals plentiful when Tottenham face Liverpool
Andrew Avery

The early game on the Barclays Premier League schedule features Tottenham Hotspur hosting Liverpool and if history has taught us anything, it's that we could be in store for a ton of goals.

Liverpool has won the previous meetings between the two clubs and has tallied 18 goals to Tottenham's four in the process.

Spurs are currently enjoying the longest unbeaten run in the league at seven games, but they would have had this fixture circled on the calendar.

Liverpool begins the Jurgen Klopp era after hiring the former Borussia Dortmund boss prior to the international break. Former manager Brendan Rodgers was sacked after the side drew 1-1 to Everton on Oct. 4.

The Jurgen Klopp era begins as Liverpool visit Spurs
By SOCCER AUTHORITY

The Premier League returns after the dreaded international break with many sub plots front and center. Chelsea will look to snap a dreadful run of results and Liverpool plays its first match under new manager Jurgen Klopp are just a couple of examples of what to expect.

Soccer Authority breaks down what to look for in this weekend's Premier League schedule.

Chelsea vs. Aston Villa

Jose Mourinho's team has endured a disappointing opening to the season, taking eight points from as many matches and appearing a shadow of the team that became champions in dominant fashion just five months ago.

The 3-1 home loss to Southampton before the international break left Chelsea in 15th place and they head into Saturday's match only four points better off than third-from-bottom Villa.

Out-of-form defender Branislav Ivanovic is expected to miss out for Chelsea after picking up a hamstring injury on international duty with Serbia, while Diego Costa is suspended. Jose Mourinho has never lost successive home BPL matches as a manager, he’ll be hoping this record isn’t broken on Saturday.

Defenders Ciaran Clark (hip) and Jores Okore (knee) remain out for Villa, who will assess Adama Traore (ankle) and Gabriel Agbonlahor (calf) before the game.

Injured (Chelsea): Courtois, Ivanovic.

Key Stat: Chelsea have conceded at least two goals in seven of their eight BPL matches this season (the other game was a 2-0 win against Arsenal).

Everton vs. Manchester United

Everton has won the last three meetings between the sides at Goodison Park and have done so without conceding a goal. Everton’s hopes of maintaining that record have been bolstered by the likely return of highly-rated defender John Stones.

Manchester United know that they need to end their bad run of results against Everton. Untied led the BPL briefly a couple of weeks ago, but were humbled by a resurgent Arsenal in the last match day.

With fierce-rivals Man City expected to easily beat Bournemouth, there is a lot of pressure on Louis Van Gaal’s men to take all three points in this game.

No new injuries have surfaced for Martinez following the international break, although Leighton Baines remains around two weeks away following an ankle problem.

Injured (Manchester United): Luke Shaw. Unlikely to feature: Carrick, Herrera, Schweinsteiger, Rooney

Key Stat: Anthony Martial has touched the ball in the opposition box more often than any other BPL player this season (every 9.2 minutes, minimum of 90 minutes played).

Spurs vs. Liverpool

The early kick-off on Saturday will hopefully see the Barclays Premier League return with a bang. Struggling Liverpool travel to White Hart Lane to take on Tottenham. Than goodness the international break is over!

Much of the focus regarding this game is on the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as manager. We feel that the market is over-valuing Klopp's appointment, as statistically teams do poorly in their opening game when there is a change of manager during the season. Especially new Liverpool bosses, with no Reds boss winning their opening game for nearly 20 years.

Klopp inherits a side which has stuttered since the start of the season as they have recorded just three wins, three draws and two defeats from their eight Premier League games so far. We expect this to be a hard-fought encounter, here’s some more stats to consider:

Spurs sit in eighth position heading into the clash, two places above Liverpool. A victory here for Spurs could see them make inroads on the top six as the table begins to take shape. Spurs are the only Barclays Premier League team not to have lost since the opening weekend (W3 D4).

Injured - Liverpool: Roberto Firmino, Jon Flanagan, Christian Benteke, Jordan Henderson, Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez. Spurs: Dier, Mason, Bentaleb, Son.

Key Stat: Goals are never far away when these two sides collide, and with the last six meetings between the pair having produced three or more, expect that trend to continue in North London.

Manchester City vs. Bournemouth

Top of the table City will be keen to extend their lead at the top with a big win over newly-promoted Bournemouth. The Cherries have been impressive in some games this season, but injuries to crucial players mean they will struggle even more than expected against City and other top teams.

City do have injury concerns themselves with Sergio Aguero and David Silva out, but they have plenty of quality options. Kevin De Bruyne has scored three goals and assisted two in his three BPL starts for Man City. De Bruyne has scored six times in his past seven outings for club and country. City manager Manuel Pellegrini will be keen for him to extend this run of form with Sergio Aguero and David Silva in the treatment room.

A big boost for City will be the return of captain Vincent Kompany, who is set for his first taste of club action since sustaining a calf problem during last month's UEFA Champions League defeat to Juventus. However, Pellegrini's opposite number Eddie Howe is short of reinforcements after a succession of cruel injury blows. Bournemouth will have to do without record signing Tyrone Mings, top scorer Callum Wilson, as well as captain Tommy Elphick (centre-back) and explosive winger Max Gradel.

Injured (Man City): Sergio Aguero, Silva, Delph. Unlikely to feature: Yaya Toure, Kolarov

Key Stat: Manuel Pellegrini's side have scored in all but one of their last 24 league matches, including each of the last 17.

Watford vs. Arsenal

A 3-0 win over Manchester United moved the Gunners to within just two points of league leaders Manchester City before the latest round of friendlies and qualifying matches for UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Arsenal take on a Watford side with just one win in their last five matches in all competitions. Wenger has some concerns over the fitness of Alexis Sanchez, with the Chile star, who has scored five goals in his last two league matches, having played both recent World Cup qualifiers for his country.

Arsenal boast a strong record against Watford, having won all five of their previous meetings, including the last four in the BPL. Nigeria forward Odion Ighalo has scored Watford’s last five BPL goals, Arsenal will need to watch Ighalo closely.

Injured (Arsenal): Koscielny, Wilshere, Rosicky, Welbeck

Key Stat: Petr Cech has the best save percentage in the Barclays Premier League this season (82%, minimum 5 saves).
