I would say whoever scores more than 2 touchdowns wins by default. LY both teams scored only 27 offensive TD's through 13 games. Wow! Is Spurrier ever going to get a QB that can get it done. In fact, Phil Steele shows S. Car returning 6 starters on Offense with no returning starting QB. I checked out the roster and none of the returning QB's are graduating. Did they ever settle on a starter LY?

South Carolina's offense sputtered because Spurrier kept switching the QBs, the turnovers were endless, and a failure to get a running game going. Spurrier also refused to fit his system around his personel but that should change this yr. New OL coach Eric Wolford (Illinois) should have an immediate impact on that group of OL. He is also the "Run Game Coordinator" and will have an input in getting that going.. As of right now, SC would return their LT & Center. Their RG left school in the middle of the season, he is expected back in June and if so, he will get his RG spot back because he is one of the more talent OL on the team. That would leave LG-RT to fill which there are bodies on the team to slide in. The coaching has been horrible with the OL, its not a lack of talent. Jamon Meredith is supposed to be drafted in the 2nd round this year, you would of never known it watch SC play offense. Jean Piere is very experienced and could be a canidate for LG, Terrence Campbell could be a canidate for RG, he started 8 games there in 2008 but I don't think these guys will get spots, maybe 1 of them. They will be heavy competition to become LG-RT on the OL.

SC lost their "starting" RB but thats not a loss at all. Mike Davis was horrible this year. SC has talent at RB if we are going by recruiting rankings but it is widely unproven. Its a 4-back battle heading into the spring. Junior Brian Maddox is the only big-back on the team though. Eric Baker (soph), Kenny Miles (R-Fr), Jarvis Giles (frosh) have speed. Its going to be an interesting battle but Baker-Miles-Giles can make people miss while Maddox is more a straight-line runner.

The 2 biggest losses on offense for Carolina are TE Jared Cook and WR Kenny McKinley. TE Wesleye Saunders (6
5 270) has played a lot and made a lot of plays will enter his junior year as the starting TE. He is very talented but he does not possess elite speed like Cook did. At WR I see a problem for the Gamecocks because I don't like how the WR's are built. Going into Spring, SC needs to find someone who they can rely on for a deep threat, Moe Brown will be going into his senior year and is the only legit speed guy in the WR's but in 3 years he's had 1 good game (UGA 08). Jason Barnes, Joe Hills, DL Moore, Tori Childers, and the 2 incoming frosh Lamar Scruggs & Alshon Jeffery are all 6'3-6'4 WR's who lack elite downfield speed.

Now for the QB situation. QB Coach GA. Mangus is in charge of Stephen Garcia. Garcia is going through his 1st spring practice this year because he has missed the last 2 for suspensions. Flat out, he was not ready to play last year but he is the only QB on the roster this year. Chris Smelley who was awful, decided to take up Baseball at Bama. Tommy Beecher had another yr of eligibility left and will graduate and try to play at Liberty. For the Gamecocks, if Garcia gets hurt, the QB situation is very bad. If Garcia sucks, the QB situation is very bad. Garcia has talent, he showed flashes of being a competent QB who could make plays but he was overwhelmed. This spring/summer will be huge for him because he is the only QB on the team capable of leading this offense.

If we are going to tally up starters going from the 2008 offense, they are:

WR Kenny McKinnley
TE Jared Cook
RB Mike Davis
LG Jamon Meredith
RT Justin Sorensen
QB Chris Smelley (this shouldn't really count)

I expect the OL and RB to be better. I'm not sure QB can get any worse but worried about the WR's.

CP, UF covers the spread against 2009 UT easily. The following year? Maybe, maybe not.

Last year, Meyer took the foot off the gas bigtime against Vandy. He got up big on Vandy and gave them the 4th quarter. In 2008 the UF offense was that good. In no other year since he's been there has the UF offense been good enough to run up the score. The UT game in 2007 got out of hand quickly. It was a close game into the 3rd quarter. Sure, Tebow was still in the game. It was his 3rd game as a starting QB. I have no problem with that. UF went on to lose 4 games. Maybe they lose 5 if Tebow didn't get that extra experience in the UT game. It's not Meyer's job to stop UF's offense. That was UT's job. They couldn't do it. They did a very good job slowing UF's offense in 2008.....unfortunately, for them, they couldn't slow UF's special teams.....

the Vols already had the better defense and now add Monte Kiffin and Janzen Jackson on top of that....how the fuck you plan to easily cover if you cant score and you dont even know the line ? if Kiffin/Reaves can do anything with the offense it'll be a good game..sucks its so early in the season

you need to just hope you win the game , Meyer dont want to go out a loser vs the Vols like Spurrier did when he left...

Big revenge game right out of the chutes.

Sept 5, Oregon @ Boise St

Ducks lost last year at home to Boise. Oregon players attribute the loss in part to a late hit on their qb in his first series that sent him out of the game with a concussion. There is a LOT of anger from Oregon on this game from that and other perceived cheap shots. This game will be hard fought.

What a joke that Oregon allowed hits like that to happen AT HOME against a non-conference school. Do you think a top-tier program like Florida, Texas, USC, or OU would allow a visitor to stroll into their stadium and put hits on their skilled positions like that without retaliation?

It's time your Mickey Mouse program stops playing dress-up with their uniforms like a bunch of girls and grows a set of balls, pathetic.

Nothing more pathetic then spouting off on details that you have no idea about in a game that you didn't see.

I don't see WTF that guy is talking about? Top tier? Retaliation? I repeat WTF. That guy not only has no idea about that game, he just plain doesn't have a clue.........PERIOD. Maybe his brains are where his balls are and visa versa. He probably thought it was cool when Woody did his face mask thing or when Theisman got his leg boomaranged. Simply an unbelievable response.

Russ,
He hates Oregon, he has no credibility when discussing them.

He must be thinking about the late 80's Canes, who would have carried him out in a body bag.

Look it was a cheapshot, but I don't think getting someone back is the answer. I have never liked the idea in baseball, if a guy throws at your guy, you throw at theirs.

If you want to fight, just go fight, don't give me this bs of having to return the favor.

Keep telling yourself that.....if it makes you feel better. Lane Kiffin is an absolute idiot/moron. If you are hanging your hat on that F-head I feel sorry for you....and all of Vol Nation.....

BTW, what's the over/under on Kiffin having that job past 2012?

I agree Coach: Kiffin has really never done anything on his own much less enough to be selected as head coach at Oakland or Tennessee. He showed his ass big time during recruiting and Florida was not the only school in the SEC he pissed off. He does however have one hell of a crop of assistants most of whom are more qualified than him. I know that this years game could be hyped up but I think that what happens just prior to that game, during that game, and just after that game will have more to do with setting up real heat next year. If Meyer does run it up that will set the tone. I see know reason for him to show Kiffin any mercy and his team might not like him holding back if he chose to do so. I am like you, this year Florida kicks ass and I think Tenn will just have to like it. Then next year when Tebow leaves (if he ever leaves) then maybe the players will have more to say about it on a more equal playing field. This year could get ugly. Tiffin still has many lessens to learn and this will be just one of them.

wow, seems i hit a nerve, who said anything about Kiffin?

i think Meyers problems started when he lied to Jarvis Snead telling him he was recruiting Tebow as a LB

really thats what hurts your team in the end - if you lie to players its hard to keep them coming in

he had a good run at Florida,he will do good at Notre Dame too, and maybe Charlie Strong will finally get the chance he to be a HC that he deserves

does Lane Kiffin play defense ? does he coach defense?

Monte Kiffin is the most proven defensive coach in the world. thats who Florida has to score on to run up a score....do you guys not understand that ?

if Mike Tyson called me names, id be mad - but i still couldnt kick his ass

I just thought it might not be a bad idea to start a thread and look at games for 2009 that fall in the category of revenge games or games a certain team may have circled for whatever reason. These types of games seem to get the focus and maximum effort from the motivated team. These are the kind of games that get lost on down the road and I thought (with six months to go) that if we had a thread to reference we could start listing the ones we know of indiviually and share them. Not all are as high profile as others but in my opinion these types of games are the ones you want to be aware of before you make a bet.
We all know about O.U. and Texas and all of the turmoil involved in making that more than just another game but there are others that I am sure that I and lot of others might not know about. And it looks like Kiffin did not make a new friend in Florida so that may get ugly. Always looking for an edge and there is no time like the present to start preparing for next season. Look forward to your responses.

One to keep an eye on would be ND vs. USC @ND 10/17. ND has a bye week the game before and should be confident coming off a blowout vs. Washington. Also, the extra week should give Weis who is really an Xs and Os coordinator at heart more time to dissect film which is the only thing, other than recruiting, he is really good at (certainly not player development or motivation).

We'll obviously be looking to avenge our 35 point loss last year and 38-0 loss the year before. Notre Dame's talent lies in its junior class (who was on the field both years for the humiliating losses) and freshman class (many of whom were on the field this past year). They're older, experienced, and are carrying around the chip from those two bad losses. This past year, ND's best receiver (Floyd, freshman) and linebacker (Smith, Sophomore) were hurt for the SC game but both were back for the bowl game vs. Hawaii.

It's early in the year and USC has lost it's two coordinators, 9-10 starters on defense (including their 4 linebackers), will have a new (possibly freshman) quarterback. I'm sure you all remember the hissy fit Pete Carroll threw at Sanchez (who by the way threw 3 picks against us, himself) for leaving which suggests he doesn't have confidence in either Mustain or Corp, both of who throw a lot of interceptions. Barkley, the incoming freshman QB has a cannon for an arm but that sometimes gets him in trouble as he threw a high amount of picks in HS.

USC and Pete Carroll are susceptible to upsets; I believe that have the record for largest upset (lost as 41 point favorites to Stanford in 2006) and they have also been upset by huge dogs UCLA in '07 and Oregon State '08.

Now the big x factor for ND is the offensive line. If we don't have a solid running attack by the SC game, I wouldn't wager a hard earned penny on this team. If we beat Nevada (a very good team) the first game of the season handily and are undefeated (very possible looking at the schedule) going into the SC game, the campus will be in an absolute frenzy. The game is also the Saturday after school lets out for our Fall Break which means we will all be able to get drunk and rowdy without hesitation (may seem like something unimportant, but believe me, to us college students it makes a world of difference) and the stadium should be rocking.

Summary: ND's offensive skill positions should be at least as good as USC next year, USC will have a new QB, new O and D coordinator, and 10 new starters on defense, ND looking to avenge 38-0 and 38-3 losses, the core of the ND team is now Juniors and Sophomores, SC susceptible to big upsets under Pete Carroll

I agree here. Meyer already has no qualms about running up the score, but when the opposing coach comes in talking trash/accusing him of cheating (unjustly), it's just more fuel. I look for them to be running the two minute drill up 56-10 at the end of the game.
