I would say whoever scores more than 2 touchdowns wins by default. LY both teams scored only 27 offensive TD's through 13 games. Wow! Is Spurrier ever going to get a QB that can get it done. In fact, Phil Steele shows S. Car returning 6 starters on Offense with no returning starting QB. I checked out the roster and none of the returning QB's are graduating. Did they ever settle on a starter LY?
South Carolina's offense sputtered because Spurrier kept switching the QBs, the turnovers were endless, and a failure to get a running game going. Spurrier also refused to fit his system around his personel but that should change this yr. New OL coach Eric Wolford (Illinois) should have an immediate impact on that group of OL. He is also the "Run Game Coordinator" and will have an input in getting that going.. As of right now, SC would return their LT & Center. Their RG left school in the middle of the season, he is expected back in June and if so, he will get his RG spot back because he is one of the more talent OL on the team. That would leave LG-RT to fill which there are bodies on the team to slide in. The coaching has been horrible with the OL, its not a lack of talent. Jamon Meredith is supposed to be drafted in the 2nd round this year, you would of never known it watch SC play offense. Jean Piere is very experienced and could be a canidate for LG, Terrence Campbell could be a canidate for RG, he started 8 games there in 2008 but I don't think these guys will get spots, maybe 1 of them. They will be heavy competition to become LG-RT on the OL.
SC lost their "starting" RB but thats not a loss at all. Mike Davis was horrible this year. SC has talent at RB if we are going by recruiting rankings but it is widely unproven. Its a 4-back battle heading into the spring. Junior Brian Maddox is the only big-back on the team though. Eric Baker (soph), Kenny Miles (R-Fr), Jarvis Giles (frosh) have speed. Its going to be an interesting battle but Baker-Miles-Giles can make people miss while Maddox is more a straight-line runner.
The 2 biggest losses on offense for Carolina are TE Jared Cook and WR Kenny McKinley. TE Wesleye Saunders (6
5 270) has played a lot and made a lot of plays will enter his junior year as the starting TE. He is very talented but he does not possess elite speed like Cook did. At WR I see a problem for the Gamecocks because I don't like how the WR's are built. Going into Spring, SC needs to find someone who they can rely on for a deep threat, Moe Brown will be going into his senior year and is the only legit speed guy in the WR's but in 3 years he's had 1 good game (UGA 08). Jason Barnes, Joe Hills, DL Moore, Tori Childers, and the 2 incoming frosh Lamar Scruggs & Alshon Jeffery are all 6'3-6'4 WR's who lack elite downfield speed.
Now for the QB situation. QB Coach GA. Mangus is in charge of Stephen Garcia. Garcia is going through his 1st spring practice this year because he has missed the last 2 for suspensions. Flat out, he was not ready to play last year but he is the only QB on the roster this year. Chris Smelley who was awful, decided to take up Baseball at Bama. Tommy Beecher had another yr of eligibility left and will graduate and try to play at Liberty. For the Gamecocks, if Garcia gets hurt, the QB situation is very bad. If Garcia sucks, the QB situation is very bad. Garcia has talent, he showed flashes of being a competent QB who could make plays but he was overwhelmed. This spring/summer will be huge for him because he is the only QB on the team capable of leading this offense.
If we are going to tally up starters going from the 2008 offense, they are:
WR Kenny McKinnley
TE Jared Cook
RB Mike Davis
LG Jamon Meredith
RT Justin Sorensen
QB Chris Smelley (this shouldn't really count)
I expect the OL and RB to be better. I'm not sure QB can get any worse but worried about the WR's.
