Home court at Illinois............................

Well its nice to be at home that is for sure beats a neutral court or a road game.

But the home court at Illinois is about the most overrated home court advantage in college basketball.

I went to school there for 5 years and saw the Flying Illini (Gill, Battle, Anderson, etc and then the Marcus Liberty years and stuff)

The arena is so big (I think its the largest concrete roofed structure in the country or some such distinction) and the fans so far away (slight slope to the seating not rafters, or layers) that there is not the same noise and intensity level as other Gyms in the big ten. ITs NOTHING like Williams Arena for example. ITs not CRAZY wild in that place and not noisy. Also it takes big bursts of team energy to get the crown going. And takes a guy running around with a Illini Flag to get people up and yelling and screaming usually during time outs. Im a huge Illini fan that is for sure but they are not a great home team and do not have a great home court advantage like some other teams. That is one of the reasons they are not higher ranked each year they do not defend the home court like most other top teams. I like Wake tonight plus 6 at Skybook with the free 1/2 point.
????
Were your fingers crossed as you typed this?
Illinois might be the most UNDERRATED HCA.
Illinois has been a completely different team home vs. raod in the recent years. The record pretty much speaks for itself. I believe now 67-3 (90%) over the last 6 or 7 years or so. If they played like that everywhere they'd have banners all over the place there,

Tell me you were kidding.

D2, no kidding. I don't know where that post came from. I go to games all the time there, and it's very loud. It may have been different back in his day, and if so, he needs to get to a game immediately. I think all the students moving down has something to do with it, along with the new "everyone wear orange" theme. No team could beat them there. Best home court advantage in the entire country. For sure. And a damn good team too, without the advantage.

try, try, try to get a clue. Lou Henson stopped coaching the team 8 years ago. Wake up.....have you been hibernating for the last 5 years? :WTF: Go to a game and see what it's like now. It's a whole different era, bro. Huge Illini fan, now that's funny.

fair point, I have not been back to Champaign in 9 years to see a game. But its that same arena. Believe me I was there when Illini was NUMBER 1 in the country that year. I saw them almost lose to g Tech on Super bowl Sunday in an AMAZING game. Im a big big fan but that is not a great home arena for that extra advantage compared to other home courts. Neither is that football stadium a good home field, too big....

Great win tonight. I have on my Illini stuff. Grab me a LaBamabs my friend...

I was in 7th grade and was at that Ga Tech game. Triple overtime, if I'm not mistaken....and became the No. 1 team in the land after the win. Kendall Gill broke his foot that game and missed the next month. Seriously, you need to get to a game......the atmosphere is unreal, and is so loud and jacked up for the big games. Seems like the Mich St game in 2001 was the turning point, to where winning on the road there became nearly impossible. Paint the Hall Orange Night that night became a theme they use all the time now. Surely, though, you've noticed that Bill Self only lost once there, and Weber has only lost once. LaBamba's Burritos as Big As Your Head are still being sold too.

Lou-dew & The '87-'88 High-Flying Illini, along with the '91 UNLV defending champs, are the two best non-title winning basketball teams of the past 25 years, and I was heartbroken when both lost.

Michigan pulled a Nova, as the third look at a conference foe was the charm on Rice's baseline J, and let's not even bring up the crime that was Duke in their revenger vs UNLV..something like 21-2 FT's Attempted edge by the Dukies..and just so happened to be an Extra-Large Play taking the DDs by The Machine!

Honorable Mention: Matt Othick's favorite school Arizona, lost in the National Semis with The GumbiCats..Kerr, Lofton, and Elliott were awesome!

Glad you liked them, but the Flying Illini was '88-'89. I will never forget that team, they were like friends to me in my own mind as a child. Damn, that loss still hurts to this day. And it was Sean Higgins, not Glen Rice. Off the Terry Mills miss.

There were 8 or 9 future NBA players in that '89 Final Four game between Michigan and Illinois. Unreal talent.
Terry Mills
Glen Rice
Loy Vaught I think that was his name
Kendall Gill
Nick Anderson
Marcus Liberty
Steve Bardo

Who am I leaving out?
