UPDATE: Our intrepid readers have discovered that the White House transcript says (or now says) that Bush referenced a bass and not a perch. The question is whether the White House transcript said that initially, where the press got the "perch" language from, and whether anyone has it on film or tape? Perhaps someone from the German press can help us out.

Bush told the following to a German newspaper yesterday:

Bush told weekly Bild am Sonntag when asked about his high point since becoming president in January 2001.

"I would say the best moment of all was when I caught a 7.5 pound perch in my lake."​

The only problem is that the world's record for the largest freshwater perch caught is 4 pounds 3 ounces.

So Bush either doubled the world record, and didn't report it, or he's a liar.

The lying isn't even the worst of it. Maybe he meant to say bass. Doesn't really matter. What does matter is that he couldn't come up with a single best moment of his presidency that was actually job-related.

The sad thing is that nobody else can either. The perch/bass thing may have really been the correct answer.

Many times a good strategy for catching nesting bass is the carolina rig.

use a 1 ounce slider weight, 18-24" of leader, and a 2/0 hook with a 4" finesse worm. This way you can float the worm over the nest without spooking the fish.

I was thinking the same thing. German media, maybe the Bass/Perch thing was just mistranslated or Bush flubbed it (some folks, even politicians never get comfortable in unscripted interviews)

With that being said - it really is pretty sad that he couldn't have said something along the lines of "having the mother of a soldier tell me blah blah blah" or "the day I received a letter from a teacher in NY about the post 911 recovery".

Oh well - a nice size fish regardless.
