Just some insight to share... most of you all know this. But velocity isnt the only answer when looking at a hurler.
I have received a lot of notes recently about "he throws this hard" or " he throws 98mphs"
Now grant it, it helps to toss hard. To throw gas. But being a thrower versus being a pitcher are two different things. Velocity is not the only answer. In the game, you have to have control. You have to make sure the ball goes where you want it to go. There is no doubt when a batter enters the box he is looking for you to make a mistake.
I use to pitch for PITT way back in the DAY ... I threw 90mph when no one else did. I would stand out on the rubber looking like LEATHERFACE, UNSHAVEN, HAIR DOWN TO MY A$$ with my fly down....tossing the rock at 90 mphs...
Craig Biggio showed me in one pitch that throwing hard is only one aspect of the game.... As he rifled a 389 ft - 10 ft of the ground HR down the line on my first pitch as a freshman.....haha
True story...
But show wise...
Take Eovaldi. Throws like 97 or 96 and gets BYOTCH slapped every game. Then LOOK AT JAMIE MOYER who my 3rd with a can of beans in his system could throw harder than. I think Moyer would throw 80.... etc
So, throwing hard is good, it helps but its not the only thing that one should judge when picking a game or a hurler...
