Not a lot coming out of Willingham's camp, as is usual. In any event, here is a quick summary of what appears to be known.

1. Brandon Johnson and TrueFrosh Chris Polk look to be 1-2 at RB....remember though, Polk went through practice in spring....also, Polk was slated as a WR coming into fall camp, so showing up at RB is a touch of a surprise to the locals.....he is small, quick and very fast....some who have seen him this camp have made comparisons to n. kaufman..

2. Locker will be fine.

3. I think the Washington O-line will be a huge surprise, especially with Garcia seemingly ready to go....there is good depth here too.....

4. Easy to say the defense will be better....but it will...D-line is a huge question mark, but there are some big frosh that can fill some holes.....i think that if there is one spot where you can get away with talented (but young) guys, it is D-line..

5. WR position is still as bit as question mark as we had at the start of camp.....

6. Ballman can punt, but our K is still undecided...which means they are all average at best...

i think it is going to be tough going in oregon, but they will grow up a lot.....if they get a lose, no cover in eugene, i will be allllll over this team when they play byu.....i think the uw can win outright there.

I was thinking the same thing Jmo.

Hey Jimmymo!
Good to see you posting. Couple of things.

I hear what people are saying up here but I don't think anyone knows for sure on Locker, he hasn't gone full go yet. In fact he was held out of UW's last scrimmage. How is he going to get his timing down w/ wrs?

I am not surprised by two things you mentioned, first I think that it is pretty well acknowledged that oline is a strength for the dawgs and having Garcia back is a big boost to the unit. I am amazed by his recovery...

Secondly on Polk, it is my understanding that he came to UW because they promised him a shot at RB. USC was focused on him at WR. I have been intrigued by Polks potential since spring. Sounds like he could be a force. As for Brandon Johnson someone needs to fill him in on the reality. There isn't a snowballs chance in hell that UW wins the pac10 with the youth on this team. His interview on KJR last week was ridiculous. I would much prefer he focuses on the team in front of him and leave that daydream left unsaid...

Lastly, I may agree with you on uw dline in general but they will be going against a vastly superior unit in game one. I really think UO is going to pound the ball down their throats. My guess is that Donatell knows this though can he stop it? I have doubts without Savannah at LB.

As for BYU I may agree, I'll be at the game on sat. I'll be very curious to watch that defense. If it has indeed improved then you could be right. I might be able to make the BYU game. Inlaws have amazing seats at UW right on the 50.

Riley is heaps better than Longshore, Riley should have played more last year.

This is one of the reasons that last years CAL team imploded. It was obvious to the team who the better qb was and Tedford kept putting a limp Longshore out there. He lost his team on that decision.

Riley makes this CAL team a pretty dangerous under the radar squad. If Jahvid Best can stay healthy this could be a tough Offense to contain.

Conan, you post any plays yet?

I've mentioned all of them but I may as well go on record as I've placed wagers on every one. I've just been waiting on the injury updates but I think they are pretty much done deals. I may upgrade one or two but that's it.

Lean on Fresno St.+5.5 but why jinx myself with a dog since everything else is chalk... kind of normal for the first week.

I feel like it would be really redundant to do more write ups on the teams and games because I've talked about them for weeks one way or another.

I'm still tossing around the OR St./Stanford game. I might do something with Oregon St. however I really want to watch them play and find out if they are as strong offensively as I think they will be. I want to see what RB Jacquizz Rogers can do vs a relatively slow defense. Might be entertaining as hell. I want to see that OL blow some holes open for McCants if they can. Also, that Stanford defense behind the line has a long way to go with their pass coverages. I need to see Moevao play up to the level that he's been practicing at and see if he can exploit a very weak secondary (providing that he gets decent protection... another if.) That will tell me heaps about how to bet them down the road. The Oregon St. defense will end up better than last year's because man for man they are faster than the previous edition but they probably need some time to gel and play as aggressively as they have been known to play. I haven't been happy with the information I've been getting from Stanford. Harbaugh has kept practices secret and not much has come out of there. All the trends say UNDER the total. But with Oregon St's newfound weaponry, I find that hard to lay money against. Maybe this week something will leak out from Palo Alto. All I can do is lean at this point.

Thursday TV game update

OK so Or.St's OG Jeremy Perry won't be traveling with the Beavers to Stanford. I wasn't counting on him to add much to the team for another month. He's been on and off all summer right up to last week and he needs more rehab time for his repaired knee to heal.

I still may play the Beavers for a 1/2 unit if I MUST wager on the TV game. Doubt that I will just for that. As I see it, no effect on the total here because I think that rests with how well Moevao can hook up with the Beavers first rate receivers vs a pretty poor Stanford secondary. Kinda close for me to call, but Stanford may not chip in their share of points to go over.

Good news for Idaho bettors?

Arizona tight end Rob Gronkowski, expected to be one of the key weapons in the Wildcats offense this season, will miss the season opener against Idaho with strep throat and he could miss up to a month if it's found the sophomore also has mononucleosis, according to reports out of Tucson. Sophomore A.J. Simmons will step in for Gronkowski. Simmons caught one pass last year, a 3-yard touchdown versus Stanford.

Here are two stories: Arizona Daily Star and Tucson Citizen.

Oregon QB Costa out minimum 8-10 weeks after reinjuring knee

By Ted Miller
Updated: August 25, 2008, 5:42 PM

<!-- begin story body --> <!-- template inline -->Oregon sophomore quarterback Nate Costa will be out a minimum of eight to 10 weeks after reinjuring his surgically repaired left knee five days ago, the school reported Monday.
Justin Roper will start in the opener against Washington on Saturday in Autzen Stadium. His backups will be Jeremiah Masoli, a sophomore transfer, who led City College of San Francisco to the junior college national title last year, and true freshman Chris Harper. Neither Masoli nor Harper have played in a Division I-A game. Costa, who will need surgery to repair damaged cartilage, began spring as the overwhelming favorite to run the Ducks' spread offense, but Roper had been surging in recent weeks. Roper played extensively last year after Dennis Dixon went down with his own knee injury. Roper threw four touchdown passes in the Ducks' 56-21 Sun Bowl victory over South Florida. Costa first tore ligaments in his knee on Oct. 30. The MRI following his new injury Wednesday was inconclusive over where there is new ligament damage. The status of his ACL and MCL will be assessed during the upcoming surgery. A date has not been set for surgery. In other news, head coach Mike Bellotti also announced that junior linebacker Kevin Garrett, who had been suspended indefinitely prior to the start of fall camp, has been dismissed from the team.
