A lot of reports on several new guys playing defense in the Wildcat practices, impressing everyone to the point where Stoops is praising his CB's and DB's, several of them, so they appear to be moving in the right direction with added depth.

For that matter, their defense has been playing so well in practice that people are starting to question whether or not their offense is got their sh*t together. I think Tuitama will be fine, especially since some new (and returning) WR's are also looking very impressive.

It would be interesting to follow these new developments about Zona's defense. Their experience might not be enough yet to make them a strong and well balanced team but they are going to cover some lines with ease compared to normal expectations, for example laying 27 to Idaho looks much more doable with a defense that can force a few more 3 and outs compared to last year.

I'm not sure how well they will be able to defense the run, but there's plenty of time left in fall camp to gauge what to expect. I think their defense will be improved compared to last season. That may or may not win very many more games and we are far from talking about "desert storm" but I think it will pay off at the window.

I don't think it's just about Zona's offense anymore. They will match up better vs more teams defensively, and it will take a better and faster offense to beat them compared to last year.

I have read similar articles and such regarding the defense but within the same articles it gives stats as to how the various qb's and rushers are doing. Both seem to be doing well vs that defense in practice. In fact , the only area where the defense seems to be shining is in its blitzing , which makes a lot of sense because most offenses aren't ready to defend blitz packages as much at this point in the fall as compared to weeks from now.

There are a lot of nice recruits on that defense but I think people ( mostly the beat writers and bloggers who follow this team ) are putting a little too much emphasis on some stoops post practice comments and not focusing on what is actually happening on the field. Now, that defense may come together and if so Arizona should be a team that goes places but I think what you are getting out of fall camp so far is Stoops trying to boost confidence of the young and inexperienced guys he will be playing once the season starts. Still early in the fall , but I would take some of these reports out of tucson with a grain of salt.

ALWAYS

However here I was just referring to the play of the CB's and LB's in coverages, not blitzing. All this in the face of losing Antoine Cason.

I think everyone is watching Zona's defense this season. It's unlike this team to be so hoplessly defenseless as they have been in recent years. If anything, that factor explains their lack of success, especially since Sonny Dykes arrival.

Thx,
I check the blogs as well. Just about every day. Good stuff. Easy to see why papers are canning their reporters.

Sportsradio is abuzz today about an injury to Jake Locker. Apparently he tweaked his hamstring and will be out for 3-5 days.

This is not a good thing as hammy's have a way of not getting better for a looong time. Even worse if you are a QB with a sub .500 completion percentage.
..

Any updates on this, Ducks? I layed $250 on Oregon -13.5 this morning based on what I believe to be a major mismatch on the line of scrimmage between Oregon's offensive line and Washington's defensive line and LBs. With Savannah gone for Washington and Locker with a hammy injury, Oregon has Washington at a very distinct disadvantage playing at home IMO.

Some quick updates....

CAL:

It appears that Jahvid Best is completely healthy again and Shane Vereen has also distanced himself from the other RB's on the team so it appears that Cals backfield tandem will consist of Best and Vereen. Finally we are getting some answers regarding who's who as Cal's new skill position players. More to come I'm sure.

Just FYI, as much as I like Kevin Riley compared to Nate Longshore, I have to give Longshore credit as a fast starter. He's been especially strong at the beginning of the season when playing at home. I still like Cal laying 5 points to Mich. St. in W1 regardless of who get the start.

UCLA

UCLA still struggles to find an OL combination that is worthy of starting and ANYONE to add to their OL depth chart. An interesting stat about the Bruins OL... since 1999, no UCLA offensive lineman has been drafted by the NFL. This problem is apparently nothing new to UCLA, and especially during Dorrell's tenure, but this year their OL problem stands out like a sore thumb. Norm Chow has his work cut out for him.

OREGON

I know it's early but progress in the Duck's fall camp has been painfully slow. Maybe in week 2 of practice we'll see some things get shakin.

OREGON ST.

Impressive practices from their skilled players at most every position and very much the case with FR. RB (who looks like he won't be redshirting) Jaquizz Rogers. Moevao looks VERY improved with his accuracy throwing the ball in medium and deep patterns. James Rogers and Sammy Straughter are catching every thing thrown near them but Darrell Catchings has a case of the dropsies, very much unlike him compared to last season. The biggest question remaining on the team is their OL to start the year. Perry is guardedly playing on a healing foot and Tavita Thompson won't be seen until after Nov.1 when his bogus suspension is over. IMHO once again, this team has been grossly underrated.

STANFORD.... I'm still scratching my head over this one. This story bears some investigation and followup:
Stanford Football: Practice Is Not Hard Enough

Thomas Brown attended a Stanford practice and was quite appalled.

August 04, 2008

bradford_article.mark
I had the distinct honor of attending a Stanford University summer camp practice the other day as I was passing through Palo Alto on my way to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Let me tell you something: I have never been more appalled at any college football practice since I have breathed on this earth.
I've seen many college practices in my day, and let me tell you, this was the worst one I've ever seen, hands down.
There was absolutely no energy, from the players to the coaches. It was so quiet out there that if I yelled something the entire team would have looked over.
Not to mention that Harbaugh continually played the three's the entire practice. The three's got about 20 reps during the scrimmage portion of the practice.
The coaches seem to think they are running a summer camp for little kids, not a division one football program out there.
It is like Harbaugh is running a country club up there in Palo Alto, it borders on the ridiculous. I didn't know what was more amazing: the players walking back to the huddle in between plays or the five minute water breaks he gave them in between drills.
To cap it off, Harbaugh did not even make his team condition after practice.
I am not trying to be negative, but it became quite clear to me as to why Stanford is a struggling program in the Pac-10. Harvard and Yale can beat this team. In all honesty, I do not believe that Stanford would win the Ivy League.
If you are a Stanford fan, I would encourage you to head out and watch one of their "practices" in the next couple of weeks. I think you would be sick to your stomach.
If Stanford ever wants to be a contender in the Pac-10, they are going to have to outwork opponents. They will never have the talent of a USC or Oregon due to their high academic standards. But if Harbaugh continues letting his program practice this easily for the entire camp, the Cardinal will struggle just like they always do.

Who wrote the Stanford piece, Conan? Word is Harbaugh has closed practices and doesn't allow anyone in. Could this be a bogus article?

sooners,
confirmed today by lockers dad that he has a partial tear on hammy. Dad said he would be back for oregongame but I think that is VERY premature.

i grabbed some oregon as well at 14 about 10 days ago, this line should go higher. Hammy's can have a way of being problems much longer.

conan who wrote that stanford article? wow.

Good deal for us, bad deal for Locker. I noticed the line was back to -14. I'm glad I caught it at -13.5, but it shouldn't matter anyway. Hamstring problems can linger for a very long time.

Ducks and SBS, I'm taking the day off at the beach but I'll find the link when I get home. That article threw me for a loop too. Maybe there will be some followup... certainly some comments from the bloggers. The guy who wrote it admitted that it was a privilege for him to be let in.

Great thread Conan! Keep the updates coming in. Where do you find time to read all this stuff?

Personally, I'm in the middle of a divorce and after soon finalized I will have much more time to dedicate to college football, sportsbetting and contributing to the forum. My day job is a bit unstable as I'm in the mortgage business so I'm looking to make some supplementary income this year in college football.

I value all your opinions and look forward to a tight season of money management.

Pac10 boyz, let's  and :drink: this year!

You said it bro! My attorney costs $225hr, but he's a badass ex-marine. I'm not paying a shitload of child support the rest of my life and currently I'm gunning for 50/50 child custody, have two girls 4 and 2. I didn't ask for this shit and I'm not going to get screwed. As they say, you don't mess with the wiseguys.

Anyhow, enough of the personal crap. Looking forward to reading more this year, watching more games this year, and crunching the numbers harder. Anyone use StatsFox? I might tap into it more this year.

I think the comments to this guy's blog are more accurate than his remarks. He really doesn't sound like he knows much to me . . . . .

Yeah but who is he? Did he see what he said he did or not?
I'd look a little deeper. After all other bloggers have to follow up now with something different if anyone knows what's really happening. It's good for someone to try to pry open what goes on behind closed doors at Stanford. Let's let this play out and see what happens this week. I check this blog most days. If I see anything else or something different, I'll post it.

What Would Jake Locker's Absence Mean for the Washington Huskies?

The recent hamstring strain of Jake Locker in practice has Ian Peterson evaluating the options at quarterback behind the Washington star.

willingham_article.tyrone
One of the potential nightmares for the UW Huskies leading into the 2008 season is the loss of star player and leader Jake Locker.
On Thursday, Locker came up lame on a run with what the Huskies staff is calling a hamstring sprain. Luckily, it is not as serious of an injury (potentially, the injury could nag him all season or it could go away quickly) and he should be back soon.
In the meantime, backup Ronnie Fouch is leading the offense. He has yet to take a snap at the collegiate level.
Fouch is a good passer and a smart offensive player; putting up 5,069 passing yards and 57 touchdowns to 12 interceptions in high school. He can move but is no Jake Locker. He is much more of a pro-style quarterback.
Behind Fouch is Luther Leonard, a recent recruit, and walk-on Taylor Bean. Because of Leonard's inexperience and Bean's walk-on status, Fouch is so far the undisputed backup in the Washington system.
The talent in the offense is much improved, but it requires strong leadership from Locker. The loss of Locker would prove to be a huge blow to the chances of Tyrone Willingham holding onto his job at Washington.
Willingham does not have an outstanding track record of motivating the troops at game time, and at the very least, Locker would help to provide the spark Washington needs. Fouch has been able to gain the respect of his teammates and would be solid, but the lack of game experience is crucial.
A good side note to point out is that highly touted freshman Chris Polk has history with Fouch, since they both attended the same high school. So potentially a powerful bond could be set up between them.
The Washington coaches have been very frank about the need to give Fouch game experience this season, no matter what happens with Locker. Locker's leg injury and the missed practice may mean a baptism by fire against Oregon. Hopefully, Fouch is up to the task.
Locker's injury is scary for Husky fans, as I'm sure it is for Tyrone Willingham especially. Without Locker, there is a vastly diminished chance of reaching that coveted bowl game Washington has been seeking the past few years.

Olson re-injures foot backing away from center
By Bruce Feldman
ESPN The Magazine

Ben Olson re-injured his right foot at Saturday's practice backing away from center.
Olson, who hurt his foot last spring making the same move, was carted off the field and taken for a floorscan examination.
The test proved inconclusive, a UCLA spokesman Saturday night. Olson will have an X-ray, and possibly an MRI, Sunday. Olson, a BYU transfer, underwent surgery on the same foot in the spring.
In Olson's absence junior college transfer Kevin Craft and freshmen Chris Forcier, Kevin Craft and Nick Crissman took the snaps at practice.

UCLA is currently a 6 point dog most places in their opener vs. Tenn. If Olsen is out, you'll never see that number again.

I got down with TN-6.... hurry hurry.
