Many historical errors are being thrown around on this page.
First, Russia was well on the way to winning the war, almost
by themselves. Yes, American aid helped tons, but the fighting
and dying was done by the Russians. They invented the
best fighting tank in the war, yes better than the Tiger.
They produced weapons at an almost unbelievable rate,
even more so at the ending of the war than at the beginning
or the middle. The amount of artillery they unleashed was
unheard of up to that time. Many historians agree that US
presence probably shortened the war, and I agree. However,
the war would have been eventually won by Russia simply
because of their climate and their vastness. They played
a war of attrition and the Nazi war machine just couldn't
keep at it. Now the Pacific theater was a different story.
Second, name a country that is or was worse than the US.
My God there are plenty of them. How about Stalin and Russia
he personally killed more Russians and country man than any
other maniac in history Does anybody
need any proff about Nazi Germany. How about Pol Pot?
What about the empire of Japan and their atrocities?
Many of the Arab countries that will chop your head off
for adultrey. African countries that engage in genocide.
Many countries worse.
Third, I am sorry but the French resistance although very
noble did very little in the way of fighting or winning the
war. Any other belief is simply a myth. Mostly they
disrupted and destroyed installations.
Fourth, there are many areas that the US leads the world
in. A great deal of new medical procedures, new medicines
and scientific discoveries are done in the US. The info
age by and large started here. American schools although
maligned are standing tall with the rest of the world.
I made this argument before and I will mention it again.
A large number of Noble prizes winners, especially in the
sciences are US educated. Ask yourself this question,
if on vacation and stricken seriously ill. "where would you
rather be if you needed an operation?" I think most people would agree
they would feel more comfortable in the US hospitals with
US trained physicians. Not a negative reflection on other
countries and their medical profession. Just feel we are
a little bit more advanced than most--actually all.
Fifth, nobody would argue or disagree that our military
is the best in the world.
This may sound like I am defending the US in everything that
is does. Hardly, we have made horrendous errors and denied
people human rights ever since we became a nation. We almost
always make the wrong decisions (since after WWII) on what
countries to support and what countries to war on.
Cuba did not have to become communist. Vietnam made many
overtures to the US for aid and help, instead we invaded them.
A great deal, about 72% of the world is not with us in this
war. History will probably push that number much higher.
Naturally, I can go on and on about the social inequalities and
constant legislation hurting the middle class. The "patriot act"
is anything but patriotic. (considering how little we even know
about it) Our rights can be in grave danger if this
adminstration continues with their arrogrant and stupid ways.
No country is perfect and democracy and capitalism certainly
have drawbacks. But, can you name a better combo when
things work like they should?
