I agree with you on this. However I also think that we as Americans aren't very good at admitting when we're wrong.
I try not to generalize, especially when speaking about 270,000,000 people.
I know what you mean on corrupt Latin American and South American governments that goes way back. On the other hand Reagan got away with his little party in Nicaragua too.
Hope you're not trying to equate the situation with the sandinistas and the blatant stealing the politicians of these 3rd world countries do regularly while half their population are literally starving to death.
I can sympathize here too. I had the same type of experiences in Central America. When it happens it makes me think about the way immigrants get treated in the States.
What was it that Muhammad Ali said after his trip to Africa for the "Rumble in the Jungle?"
"Thank god they took my ancestors on that boat!" There's discrimination everywhere. I've got a good buddy who's family came to the states from Viet Nam fleeing the communist takeover. Landed in NY without a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of. Forbes magazine called his old man about 6 months ago for an interview.......Only in America!
I'll summise by saying this. I know for a fact my government does things that aren't right, all govt's do. I don't blindly defend my country. But when others attack it just to have a "whipping boy" that's truly not taking responsibility. America is a relatively new country when compared to countries in Europe. No one gave us anything when we had our revolution. We fought for our freedom and our rights. The U.S. is the most powerful and richest country in the world because of sacrifice. It's about time that some of these countries started taking their problems in their own hands. These latin american countries beg the IMF for loans, their politicians steal half the money and then they get pissed off at the IMF and America because their economy is the way it is because they can't repay the loans. The Brazilians in 1990 should have hung Fernando Collar from the tallest building in Sao Paulo when he stole their money then fled the county. And where did he flee to?? That's right, the good ole U.S.A. I called the State Dept. in Washington when I learned of this and asked them, "why is this criminal allowed to live in my country?" Their answer, "because he was never convicted of a crime!" Can't argue with that.
I try to take everyone at face value. I don't think all Brazilians are thieves because their politicians are. There's no perfect country or form of government. I truly believe that America has and does more good than bad. We're not perfect and our gov't isn't, and I don't think anyone claims that we are. I have a brazilian friend that says, "it's bad with America but it's even worse without them".
